For ordinary play, you need a compatible Nintendo Switch-family console and Joy-Con controllers—not real sports equipment. The Nintendo Switch Sports Leg Strap is optional for most modes but required for Soccer Shoot-Out. Before buying one, check your game edition: the physical edition includes a strap, while digital-edition owners can buy one separately.
What you need to start playing
- A compatible Nintendo Switch-family console and Joy-Con controllers. The required controller setup varies by sport. Nintendo Switch Sports does not support Handheld Mode, and Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers are not compatible. See Nintendo’s product information for supported play details.
- No real sports gear. You do not need cleats, a ball, a racket, or other sports equipment; the game uses motion controls to simulate the activities. Nintendo’s announcement about the game describes its intuitive controls and notes that cleats are not required.
When you need the Leg Strap
The Leg Strap is required for Soccer Shoot-Out and can also be used for foot-based Soccer controls. Nintendo’s official game site specifies that the accessory is required for some Soccer gameplay.
The physical edition includes one Leg Strap. If you have the digital edition and want to play Soccer Shoot-Out, you can purchase a compatible strap separately. Nintendo also says the Leg Strap from Ring Fit Adventure works with Nintendo Switch Sports.

How to fit it
- Place the strap around the center of either thigh.
- Insert a left Joy-Con with its control stick facing outward.
- Tighten the strap enough to keep it from slipping, but do not overtighten it. Nintendo’s Leg Strap setup guide provides these fitting instructions.
Joy-Con 2 compatibility
Joy-Con 2 controllers do not fit or work with the Leg Strap. For Soccer Shoot-Out or strap-based Soccer controls, use a standard Joy-Con that is compatible with the accessory. This limitation does not mean the Leg Strap is needed for other sports.

Online play is a service requirement, not an accessory
Playing online requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. That is a subscription requirement, not physical equipment. Local multiplayer does not change the requirement to check controller needs by sport and player count.
