The best-value console is usually the one that plays the games you already own and the games you most want, at a total cost you can justify. A subscription’s catalog size alone cannot decide it: games may leave, access depends on an active membership, and older purchases are not guaranteed to work on a new system. Compare your actual game list, formats, likely subscriptions, and expected ownership period before choosing.
How to compare value for your game library
Make a shortlist of the games you already own and the games you intend to play. For each console, check whether those titles are available, whether your existing copies work, and whether you would need to buy them again. Then estimate total spending over a period that makes sense for you: hardware, games you expect to purchase, and any subscriptions you plan to maintain.
- Existing library: List the titles and note whether each is a physical disc, a digital purchase, or tied to another account. Check compatibility title by title.
- Wanted games: Identify must-play games rather than relying on a platform’s general reputation. Availability can change, so check current catalogs and platform listings.
- Subscription use: Count only games you actually want to play, and consider how long you expect to keep the membership active.
- Access and format: Consider whether you need a disc drive, reliable broadband for streaming, or access to games without a recurring subscription.
- Ownership horizon: Compare costs across the same time period for each option. A low initial cost can be offset by purchases or memberships later.
This approach avoids treating unlike figures—such as a catalog count and a hardware price—as if they were a neutral value score. The official information available describes each publisher’s own services and compatibility, not a universal winner across platforms.
What each platform’s subscription adds
Subscriptions can lower the cost of trying or playing multiple games, but catalog access is conditional rather than permanent ownership. Before paying, confirm that the titles you want are included in the specific tier available in your region and that you are comfortable with access ending when the membership lapses or a game leaves the catalog.

Nintendo Switch Online
Nintendo Switch Online adds online play in compatible games, cloud-save backup for supported games, and access to a curated library of classic games. Nintendo’s US support page lists these 12-month membership prices: individual Nintendo Switch Online at $19.99, individual Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack at $49.99, family Nintendo Switch Online at $34.99, and family Expansion Pack at $79.99. The standard individual plan is also listed at $3.99 for one month and $7.99 for three months. PlayStation Plus
PlayStation Plus has Essential, Extra, and Premium tiers. Extra includes the Game Catalog; Premium adds the Classics Catalog, game trials, and cloud streaming. Sony says the catalog varies by tier and over time, so verify that a specific game is currently included before treating it as part of your plan. See PlayStation Plus plan details.
For cloud streaming through the catalog, Sony’s US support page says the correct membership tier is required and recommends at least 5 Mbps broadband; 1080p streaming requires at least 15 Mbps and a game that supports 1080p. Xbox Game Pass
Xbox’s US Game Pass pages advertise 500+ games for Ultimate, 200+ for Premium, and 50+ for Essential across supported platforms. These are publisher-stated counts, not guaranteed lists of games you will want; counts, features, titles, and availability can change and vary by plan, region, platform, and time. Access to a catalog title lasts only while the subscription is active and the game remains available. Check Xbox’s current plan comparison for the applicable terms.
Catalog size is most useful as a starting point for checking specific games. A larger catalog does not provide better value if it excludes your priorities or if you would rather own individual games outright.

How much does your existing library carry over?
Compatibility can make an existing collection more valuable, but only when the specific game and format are supported. Xbox says Series X|S supports select Xbox One, Xbox 360, and original Xbox games. Most Xbox One games are playable, but compatibility remains title-specific; check the Xbox backward-compatibility list before counting an older game as usable on a new console.
Format matters too: Xbox Series S is digital-only and cannot play physical discs. If you own disc copies, do not assume they will transfer to a digital-only system. For other console models, confirm disc support and the game’s compatibility rather than assuming that a purchase carries over.

Which console is best if you already own a lot of games?
Start with the platform and format that already contains the largest share of your playable library, but do not count every old purchase automatically. Verify that the relevant console supports each title and that your copy—disc or digital—can be used on it. Xbox may preserve value for some older Xbox purchases through its selective backward compatibility, while a Series S will not use physical discs. For Switch and PlayStation, check the relevant model and individual game’s availability or compatibility before making the same calculation.
If your collection is mostly physical, weigh disc support heavily. If it is mostly digital, check which account owns each game and whether the new console can access it. A library spread across several platforms may make the console with the most must-play games you do not already own the better choice.
Is Game Pass or PlayStation Plus worth it if you buy most games?
It may not be. Compare the cost of the membership over the period you would keep it with the price of the specific games you expect to play through it. If you mainly buy a few games and keep them, a catalog subscription may add little value—especially if your chosen games are absent or leave before you play them. If you regularly try many included games while subscribed, a catalog could suit your habits better.
Use the same calculation for Nintendo Switch Online: value depends on whether you use its compatible online features, classic-game access, cloud saves where supported, or included DLC. The Expansion Pack is not automatically worthwhile just because it includes more content; compare those additions with what you actually plan to use.

A practical decision checklist
- Write down your must-play games. Separate games you already own from games you still need to buy.
- Check title and format support. Confirm compatibility for older games and whether your disc or digital copy works on the particular model.
- Check current subscription catalogs. Verify each desired game and the tier required; do not treat catalog access as permanent ownership.
- Estimate the same ownership period for each option. Add hardware, likely game purchases, and only the subscriptions you expect to maintain.
- Account for access constraints. Include disc-drive needs, streaming broadband requirements, and whether you want to keep playing catalog games after a membership ends.
- Choose the system with the strongest fit for your own list. If the totals are close, let must-play games and preferred format break the tie rather than a headline catalog count.
