You can make 3D platformers easier to control on Nintendo Switch without buying anything: remap a troublesome button, adjust the camera deliberately, check a game’s motion-control alternatives, or use that game’s accessibility options. The right setup depends on the game and on which input is giving you trouble; there is no single button layout that suits everyone.
Choose an adjustment for the problem you are having

How to remap buttons on Nintendo Switch
System-level button mapping lets you change supported controller buttons for games and nearly all other console scenarios. It is useful when a particular button is difficult to reach or an action requires a repeated press that is uncomfortable for you.
- Open System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Change Button Mapping.
- Select the controller you want to change, then choose Change.
- Choose a button and assign a different supported input, or disable the input if that is useful for your setup.
- Confirm the layout and test it somewhere low-stakes in the game.
You can save custom mappings as presets; Nintendo’s FAQ says up to five custom configurations can be stored per supported controller on a system. To return to the standard layout, go back to Change Button Mapping, select the controller, and choose the option to reset its mapping. Names and on-screen prompts may vary slightly by system version.
Mapping is supported for Joy-Con and Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, and Switch Lite buttons can also be remapped. A stick-input setting can swap the left- and right-stick input sides, but it cannot turn stick directions into button inputs. The custom configuration is stored on the console, not carried with the controller: Nintendo’s button-mapping instructions.

Make camera and movement easier to coordinate
When a jump is difficult to judge, pause before committing and move the right stick to inspect the landing area or route. Practice steering the character and repositioning the camera as separate actions, then combine them once each feels manageable. Check the game’s move guide to confirm which input performs the move you are practicing.

Calibrate a stick or motion control that seems inaccurate
If a character moves when you are not pushing the stick, or a motion action seems off, first check the game’s own control settings. You can also follow Nintendo’s on-screen calibration process under System Settings > Controllers and Sensors, selecting the relevant stick or motion-control option.
Calibration is a troubleshooting step, not proof that a controller is damaged or a guaranteed repair. If the behavior continues afterward, the calibration instructions alone do not identify its cause. Follow Nintendo’s stick calibration steps or motion-control calibration steps, as appropriate.

Check for motion-control alternatives in the game
Motion controls are implemented differently from game to game, so consult the title’s control display or options before changing your play style. Super Mario Odyssey is one example where motion actions coexist with button alternatives for most moves; that does not mean every Switch platformer offers the same substitutes.
