A Nintendo Switch 2 Edition combines a Nintendo Switch game with an upgrade pack. If you already own the original game, you can acquire a supported pack separately; if you do not, you can buy the combined edition where it is offered. The pack’s features depend on the game, and Switch 2 Edition enhancements work only on Nintendo Switch 2.
What is a Nintendo Switch 2 upgrade pack?
An upgrade pack is an add-on for a specific Nintendo Switch game. It supplies that title’s Switch 2 Edition enhancements, while the original game remains the underlying game. Nintendo describes a Switch 2 Edition as a bundle of the original game and its upgrade pack. That means the pack alone is not a substitute for owning the base game.
Nintendo says packs can add visual improvements, new features, or extra game modes, but there is no single set of enhancements shared by every title. The original Switch software remains playable on Nintendo Switch; the Switch 2 Edition features and content are available only on Switch 2. How do you get an upgrade pack?
If you already own the Nintendo Switch game
Look up that game’s upgrade pack in Nintendo eShop or Nintendo Store, or use a retailer download code if one is offered. The pack supplements the original game, so keep access to the base game to play it. Availability and price are title- and region-specific.

If you do not own the game
Look for the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition bundle, which includes the game and its pack. Nintendo UK describes physical and digital editions, but physical availability should be checked for the specific title and market. Compare the bundle with buying a base game and pack separately where both options are available.
If you have Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack
The membership includes selected upgrade packs, not every pack. Nintendo identifies the The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Switch 2 Edition upgrade packs as membership benefits. What do the packs add?
Check the individual listing before buying: enhancements may improve presentation or controls without adding story content, while another game’s pack may include new content or features.

How to decide which purchase route fits
- Check whether you own the base game. If you do, look for its separate pack. If not, compare the Switch 2 Edition bundle with the cost and availability of acquiring the game and pack separately.
- Read the exact feature list. Decide whether you want technical improvements, control options, extra modes, or new game content; do not assume a pack adds story material.
- Check the price and store for your region. The available catalogue and pricing can vary, so confirm the specific listing before purchase.
- Check membership eligibility for that title. An active Expansion Pack membership only helps when Nintendo includes that particular pack, and you still need the matching original game.
- Confirm the console you plan to use. Switch 2 Edition enhancements and content require Nintendo Switch 2; the original game remains playable on Nintendo Switch.
