Choose based on the total price and whether you want the included game. The only accessory many owners may need is a microSD Express card for more game storage; extra controllers, a case and a screen protector are optional.
Which Switch 2 model should you buy?
Nintendo’s cited US specifications describe one main Switch 2 configuration: a console with 256 GB of internal storage and a 7.9-inch LCD. Compare the standalone package with any bundle available in your region, rather than assuming a bundle contains a different console model.
For the US, Nintendo announced that the suggested retail price would increase from $449.99 to $499.99 before tax, effective September 1, 2026. Nintendo listed €499.99 for Europe from that date and ¥59,980 for Japan’s Japanese-language-only system from May 25, 2026. These are regional announced prices, not a complete worldwide price list; check local pricing, taxes and availability. Nintendo’s price revision announcement has the regional details.
For a bundle, compare the current local total with the standalone console price and identify exactly which game is included. It is better value only if the price difference makes sense to you and you actually want that game. Nintendo announced a Mario Kart World bundle at launch in 2025, but that announcement does not establish that it remains available in every market today. Nintendo’s launch announcement provides that historical context.

What does the console include, and how portable is it?
The US technical specifications list 256 GB of internal storage and a 7.9-inch LCD with 1920 × 1080 resolution and HDR10 support. The game-card slot accepts both Switch 2 and original Nintendo Switch game cards. Nintendo also says Nintendo Account services, eShop funds and existing Switch Online memberships can continue on Switch 2, although compatibility can vary by game; consult its game compatibility guide for specific titles.
Nintendo estimates approximately 2–6.5 hours of battery life, depending on the games played, and approximately three hours to charge while the system is in Sleep mode. These are estimates, not guaranteed results for every game or use pattern. See Nintendo’s Switch 2 technical specifications.

Do you need a microSD Express card?
Only if you need more space for games. Switch 2 supports microSD Express cards up to 2 TB. Check the card label for “EX” or “Express” before buying: a conventional microSD card cannot store Switch 2 games. Nintendo says a standard microSD card can only be used with Switch 2 to copy screenshots and videos from an original Switch.
Capacity on the card adds to—not replaces—the console’s 256 GB internal storage. Compare the card’s capacity, price and seller, and verify that it is specifically microSD Express. Nintendo explains the requirement in its Switch and Switch 2 compatibility support page and technical specifications.

Which accessories are worth buying?

Buy accessories for a specific need rather than treating them as a required starter kit. A second controller matters for your play setup; a case matters if you travel with the console. Nintendo identifies Joy-Con 2 and the Switch 2 Pro Controller among the compatible controller options. Check Nintendo’s compatibility information before choosing gear.
Can you reuse accessories from the original Switch?
Some original accessories work, but compatibility is selective. Original Joy-Con can pair wirelessly, but cannot attach to Switch 2. To charge those original Joy-Con, you need a compatible Joy-Con charging grip or stand. The original Switch Pro Controller pairs wirelessly, but the original Switch dock does not work with Switch 2.

- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
The original AC adapter can charge Switch 2 directly, but cannot power it in TV mode through the Switch 2 dock. Nintendo also lists the old HDMI cable as incompatible for maximizing Switch 2 performance. Several other original Joy-Con attachments—including the strap, grip, charging grip, wheel, leg strap, Ring-Con, battery pack and two-way charging stand—do not work with Joy-Con 2. Some may still be usable with original Joy-Con in supported games. Check the exact item in Nintendo’s compatibility table before buying a replacement or counting on gear you already own.

Nintendo names adjustable display fonts and color tone, text verbalization and button customization among Switch 2’s accessibility features. If you rely on a particular feature, check how it behaves in the games you plan to play; console-level features do not establish that every game supports the same options.
