Yes—Nintendo Switch 2 plays many physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but not every game or accessory works without limits. Some titles have compatibility issues or need the original Joy-Con for a particular feature. Original Joy-Con can pair wirelessly but cannot attach to Switch 2; the original Switch dock and conventional microSD cards also do not carry over to their usual Switch 2 functions.
Can you play Nintendo Switch games on Switch 2?
Nintendo says Switch 2 can play compatible physical and digital games released for the original Nintendo Switch. Some games may be unsupported or only partly compatible, and individual games may offer free updates or paid upgrades for improved performance or additional content. Check the current product page or Nintendo eShop listing for a specific game before buying it for Switch 2.
Nintendo’s consolidated compatibility list says its status information was current as of June 5, 2025. Nintendo describes its testing as starting games and conducting limited testing, and says compatibility status may change if issues are found. The date and testing limits mean the list should not be treated as a guarantee that every title has been exhaustively tested. Check Nintendo’s Switch game compatibility page; for third-party-published games, Nintendo advises contacting the publisher for title-specific information.
Examples of listed exceptions
Nintendo’s compatibility page names Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit as unavailable because Switch 2 cannot fit inside the kit’s Toy-Con VR Goggles. It also lists the apps Niconico, ABEMA, Hulu, Crunchyroll, and InkyPen as unavailable. These are examples from Nintendo’s dated guidance, not a live guarantee of current status; verify the individual listing for a decision today.

Nintendo also publishes separate lists for games with issues that prevent progress, including startup problems, and games whose issues were resolved or were planned to be resolved by an update. Consult the current listing rather than assuming a problem or fix remains unchanged.
Which Switch games need original Joy-Con?
Original Joy-Con can pair wirelessly with Switch 2, but they cannot attach to its sides. Some games need an original controller for its IR Motion Camera, or for use with an older accessory that does not fit Joy-Con 2. Nintendo’s named examples include:

- Ring Fit Adventure: Joy-Con 2 do not attach to the Ring-Con or fit in the leg strap. Original Joy-Con can be used with those accessories.
- 1-2-Switch: Games that use the right Joy-Con’s IR Motion Camera require an original right Joy-Con.
- Game Builder Garage: Using IR Motion Camera Nodon and IR-Light Nodon requires an original right Joy-Con.
- Nintendo Switch Sports: Joy-Con 2 do not fit the leg strap, and Soccer Shoot-Out requires original Joy-Con. Nintendo says the leg strap can be used on Switch 2 with original Joy-Con connected wirelessly.
- WarioWare: Move It!: Microgames that use the IR Motion Camera require an original right Joy-Con.
- Everybody 1-2-Switch!: Joy-Con 2’s force feedback vibration is reduced compared with original Joy-Con, which may make the hidden-controller minigame harder.
- Nintendo Labo Toy-Con kits: Fit varies by kit because some cannot hold the larger Switch 2 console. Nintendo describes Toy-Con 01 and 03 experiences as different from the original; Toy-Con 02 can be played with original Joy-Con.
These are Nintendo’s stated examples, not proof that every other Switch game has been individually tested without issue. See Nintendo’s title-specific compatibility guidance before relying on a particular feature.
Which Switch controllers and accessories work with Switch 2?
Compatibility depends on more than whether an item can connect. Check whether it physically fits, whether the game supports it, and whether it can charge or power the system in the way you need.

Nintendo explains the controller-generation difference this way: original Joy-Con attach to Switch using rails, while Joy-Con 2 connect magnetically to Switch 2. Can you use an old Switch dock, charger, HDMI cable, or SD card?

How to decide what to keep or replace
- Check the game first. Search the current Nintendo eShop or product page for the exact title and confirm any feature you rely on. For a third-party game, consult its publisher if Nintendo’s listing does not answer the question.
- Identify the controller generation. Original Joy-Con attach by rails; Joy-Con 2 attach magnetically. Original Joy-Con pair wirelessly with Switch 2 but do not attach to it.
- Match the accessory to the controller. Accessories designed around the original Joy-Con may require those controllers and a supported game; Joy-Con 2 do not fit several legacy accessories.
- Separate charging from TV-mode power. The original Switch AC adapter may charge Switch 2 directly, but the original dock and adapter cannot provide Switch 2 TV mode.
- Check the storage label. Switch 2 game expansion requires microSD Express. A conventional microSD card retains the narrower use of viewing captured Switch screenshots and videos.
