A Nintendo eShop gift card is prepaid value: redeem its code while signed in to the Nintendo Account that should receive the funds, and the amount is added to that account’s eShop balance. The two things to check first are the selected account and the card’s country. Funds generally cannot be moved to another account, and a card intended for one country may not work with an account set to another.
What a Nintendo eShop gift card does
A Nintendo eShop Card contains a prepaid code that adds funds to a Nintendo Account’s eShop balance when redeemed. The funds belong to the account used for redemption, not to the console itself or everyone who uses it. Nintendo’s U.S. card terms say the code has no remaining balance after redemption and the resulting account balance is non-transferable. Nintendo’s U.S. Nintendo eShop Card Terms and Conditions also state that the balance cannot be redeemed for cash and is non-refundable unless required by law.

How to redeem a card in the U.S., Canada, or Mexico
Nintendo’s North American instructions cover Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. Choose the intended account before entering the code; redeeming under the wrong account does not put the funds into a shared console wallet.
- From the HOME Menu, open Nintendo eShop.
- Select the Nintendo Account that should receive the funds.
- Choose “Enter Code.”
- Enter the 16-character prepaid code.
- Confirm to add the funds to the selected account.
See Nintendo’s North American instructions for adding funds. The sequence and payment options described there apply to the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, not automatically to every region.

Check country compatibility before buying
Nintendo eShop Cards are country-specific. The card’s intended country must match the country associated with the Nintendo Account/eShop. Nintendo’s U.S. terms say a U.S. card is valid only with U.S. accounts; Nintendo support says it cannot exchange a card from another country for a local-country card. Check the card packaging or retailer listing and the recipient’s account country before purchase. U.S. card terms and Nintendo’s country-specific card guidance describe these restrictions.
These details are established here for North America and Japan. If the account or card is for another market, use that market’s Nintendo support page and local card terms rather than assuming the North American process or terms apply.

Can you transfer funds or change the account country?
No. eShop funds are associated with the Nintendo Account used to redeem them and are not shared with other accounts on the same console. Nintendo’s guidance says an account’s balance does not carry over when its country setting is changed; spend the remaining funds before changing that setting. Check Nintendo’s account-country change guidance before making a change.
What to do if the balance seems missing
Start with the account-selection check: confirm which Nintendo Account was active when the code was redeemed. Then check the balance for each account used on the console, and review account information on Nintendo’s website. Nintendo says transaction history online can show activity up to two years back. Its troubleshooting guidance is at Nintendo’s eShop balance and funds support page.

Do cards expire, and are there fees?
For U.S. Nintendo eShop Card terms, Nintendo states: “Code balance does not expire, and there are no fees associated with the code.” The same U.S. terms say lost or stolen codes will not be replaced by Nintendo or the retailer. These statements are specific to the cited U.S. card terms; check the terms for cards sold in other countries. Nintendo’s U.S. card terms.

Payment methods and maximum balances vary by market. Nintendo’s current North American support page lists credit card and PayPal alongside prepaid cards. It says a credit card must have been issued in the same country as the eShop, while PayPal is available only to Nintendo Account owners in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico who are at least 18. The page lists maximum total account balances of $800 USD, $1,100 CAD, and $5,000 MXN, respectively; these are market-specific limits, so check Nintendo’s current page for updates. Japan has separate rules. Nintendo’s Switch 2 support page lists credit card, PayPal, and prepaid-card numbers for adding funds on console, but says foreign-issued credit cards, foreign PayPal accounts, and prepaid cards sold overseas cannot be used in the Japan eShop. Prepaid-card balance can also be added on a phone or computer there; credit card and PayPal cannot be used for that web flow. The page states a ¥120,000 maximum stored balance. These Japan-specific methods and cap should not be generalized to other regions. Nintendo Japan’s Switch 2 eShop funding guidance.
