Xbox has proposed closing the studio and is consulting employees, but it has not announced a completed shutdown. The status of the studio’s next Senua game is also unconfirmed.
What happened to Ninja Theory?
Xbox first outlined a route to new ownership for Ninja Theory on July 6, 2026, as part of a broader restructuring. Its statement said the studio had entered terms to join new ownership and that Xbox’s plans included funding to complete and grow Senua.
That plan changed on September 22. Xbox Chief Content Officer Matt Booty said two separate agreements for Ninja Theory had fallen through. He said Xbox would begin employee consultation on a proposed closure while continuing to explore other paths forward.
On October 5, Video Games Chronicle (VGC) reported that developers had publicly said they were facing redundancy or had already lost their jobs. VGC said it verified the employee posts. The reports indicate job losses are beginning, but they do not establish how many people are affected or the final outcome of the consultation.

No completed closure has been announced in the statements and reporting available as of October 7, 2026. Xbox described closure as a proposal and said it would consult employees while exploring alternatives. That is different from confirming the studio has shut down.
The studio’s future remains unresolved: Xbox could find another path, proceed with the proposal, or change its plans. The consultation’s final result and the total number of affected roles have not been reported.

What is known about the layoffs?
VGC’s October 5 report cited public posts from developers who said they faced redundancy or had already lost their jobs. The named roles spanned technical sound, gameplay programming, performance capture, technical direction, art and related work. VGC did not publish a total for Ninja Theory.
Xbox separately said 268 roles would be eliminated in its September round across Halo Studios, other first-party studios, and Xbox Game Studios management and central functions. That is a company-wide figure for those areas, not a Ninja Theory layoff count.

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma presented the July restructuring as a broad portfolio and operating reset, saying Xbox’s business was not healthy and its content strategy had not grown as expected. Sharma cited margins three to 10 times lower than comparable platform and publishing businesses, and said Xbox lost 64 cents for every dollar invested in a typical year. These are Xbox’s portfolio-level figures and explanations; they do not establish a Ninja Theory-specific financial cause for the proposed closure.
