Ninja Theory has not been confirmed closed. Xbox said on September 22, 2026, that two agreements for the Cambridge studio had fallen through and that it would consult employees on a proposed closure while continuing to explore other options. On October 5, PC Gamer reported that several employees had posted they had lost jobs or were at risk, including a farewell from a gameplay programmer. The studio’s final fate and the full scope of job losses remain unresolved.
What is happening at Ninja Theory?
Xbox’s latest stated position is a proposed closure, not a completed shutdown. In an employee update on September 22, Xbox COO Matt Booty said: “Unfortunately, two separate agreements for Ninja Theory fell through.” He added: “We will now begin consultation with employees on a proposed closure while continuing to explore other paths forward.” Xbox’s September update
That wording matters: consultation is a process, and Xbox said it was still exploring alternatives. The statement does not confirm that the studio has closed or that every employee has been dismissed.
Why are Ninja Theory staff leaving?
The immediate backdrop is Xbox’s wider restructuring and the collapse of plans for a new owner to take over Ninja Theory. On July 6, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma told employees the company expected to reduce its workforce by approximately 3,200 roles across FY27, including approximately 1,600 role eliminations immediately. She also said four studios would leave Xbox under new management. Ninja Theory was among the studios described as having entered terms to join new ownership, with funding to complete and grow Senua. That was a planned transfer, not a completed one. Xbox’s July employee message

Xbox later said the two Ninja Theory agreements fell through. It also announced 268 further role eliminations across Halo Studios, other first-party studios, and Xbox Game Studios management and central functions. That 268 figure is part of the broader reset; Xbox did not identify it as a Ninja Theory-specific layoff count. Xbox’s announcement of the additional eliminations
What have employees said about the layoffs?
On October 5, PC Gamer reported that multiple Ninja Theory employees had posted on LinkedIn that they had lost their jobs or were at risk. The report quoted gameplay programmer Katrin Mair’s farewell: “It’s incredibly sad knowing that we won’t get to finish what we were working on,” she wrote, adding, “So much care, talent and effort went into it, and I really wish we’d had the chance to see what it could become.” PC Gamer’s October 5 report

How many people work at Ninja Theory?
Ninja Theory’s official About page describes the studio as having “just over 100 people.” The page is undated, so that figure should not be treated as a current headcount or as the number of staff affected by consultation. What does the uncertainty mean for Hellblade?
Ninja Theory developed Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice and Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, alongside games including DmC: Devil May Cry and Heavenly Sword, according to the studio’s official page. In July, Xbox’s proposed ownership arrangement was described as including funding to complete and grow Senua. After that arrangement failed, Xbox’s September statement left open other paths forward but did not specify what would happen to the studio or its projects.
Mair’s farewell indicates that at least some employees feared unfinished work would not reach completion. Xbox has not announced a final decision on Ninja Theory’s future or provided a project-by-project outcome.
