Owners can use the buttons built into each shoe for basic fit, battery, and power controls; the retirement removes the mobile app from the Apple App Store and Google Play.
What happened to the Nike Adapt App?
Nike introduced the Adapt BB self-lacing basketball shoe and its companion app in 2019. After five years, Nike retired the app and removed it from Apple and Android app stores worldwide on 6 August 2024. Nike’s support notice explains the change.
This was a retirement of the phone app, not an announcement that the shoes’ lacing hardware had stopped working. Nike says Adapt shoes continue to work without the app.
What can you still do with the shoe buttons?
Nike’s support notice describes using the controls on the shoes to adjust fit, check battery status, and turn the shoes on or off. Its indexed FAQ also describes saving fit settings and unlacing. These built-in controls provide basic operation without the app.

- Power laces lock you in at the press of a button—built into the shoe or controlled via smartphone
- The upper is made with moldable TPU yarns, making it incredibly light and supportive; The molded heel piece helps lock in your ankle
- A large Nike Zoom Air Turbo cushioning unit sits under the ball of your foot; It's articulated to engage at different angles, staying responsive as you run and cut
The Adapt BB quick-start guide offers additional product-operation context. It is hosted with an FCC filing record; its publication date and the software or firmware versions it applies to are not established, so it should not be treated as current guidance on phone compatibility.
Which features are affected by losing app access?
Independent coverage from Engadget describes phone-based fit controls and LED customization among the app’s features. Nike’s stated guidance is clearer about what remains: use the shoe buttons for basic controls. The available sources do not establish whether an app already installed on a particular phone will keep working, whether a backup can restore it, or which current phone operating systems remain compatible.

Do you need to replace your Adapt shoes?
No replacement is indicated by the app retirement alone. Nike says the shoes continue working without the app, and it documents on-shoe controls for basic operation. The retirement notice does not establish the long-term condition of an individual shoe’s battery, repair availability, or service options for other faults; those are separate questions from app access.
