There is no universal winner between Nexus Mods and ModDB: start with the site that hosts the exact game and mod you want. Nexus is a strong first stop if you want its Vortex manager or Collections workflow; ModDB is worth exploring for its mix of mods, games, news, files, and downloads. For a specific project, search both and compare the mod pages rather than assuming one catalog is always more complete.
How Nexus Mods and ModDB differ
| What to compare | Nexus Mods | ModDB |
|---|---|---|
| Site focus | Nexus says it hosts over 750,000 mods across more than 2,500 games. These are figures from its own About Us page, not independently audited counts. | ModDB describes itself as a video-game modification community and organizes its site around mods, games, news, files, and downloads. Its About Us page says it has millions of readers monthly; that is not a directly comparable mod or game count. |
| Mod management | Nexus documents integration with Vortex, its mod manager. The Vortex page advertises mod installation and organization, one-click installs for mods and Collections, and support for over 500 games. This is a product claim that may change. | The catalog pages reviewed show files and downloads, but do not establish an equivalent centralized manager. That does not prove there are no third-party tools for using ModDB files. |
| Collections | Nexus Collections are references to mods, not bundles containing the mod files. Nexus says they are installed through Vortex; a Collection may link to external resources subject to site rules. See the Collections FAQ. | No equivalent Collection feature was established by the cited ModDB pages. |
| Downloads and paid features | Nexus says downloads are free. Its Premium page advertises uncapped speeds, instant downloads, ad-free browsing, and one-click Collections. Check the live terms and price before subscribing. | The cited pages do not provide directly comparable evidence about ModDB pricing, download speed, or limits. Check the terms and download details for the specific file. |
| Moderation and safety | Nexus describes moderation as reactive and based on reports. Its Moderation Policy warns that a file’s presence on the site does not mean it complies with rules or is approved. | The cited sources do not establish a comparable ModDB moderation policy, so they do not support ranking either site as safer. |
When Nexus Mods is the better first stop
You want Vortex to manage your mods
If the game you play is supported and you want an integrated way to install and organize mods, Nexus is the more straightforward starting point. Vortex advertises support for over 500 games, but support for a game does not guarantee that every mod has a one-click installation path. Check the mod’s instructions and requirements.
You want to install a Collection
A Nexus Collection can help you follow a curated setup through Vortex. It points to mods rather than including their files, and may include external links under Nexus rules. Check the Collection’s contents and requirements before installing it.
You are considering Premium
Nexus advertises free downloads and presents Premium as an optional membership with conveniences such as uncapped speeds, instant downloads, ad-free browsing, and one-click Collections. These are Nexus’s stated benefits, not an independent speed comparison. Decide whether those features are useful to you, then verify the current price and terms on the Premium page.

When ModDB is worth checking
ModDB’s site structure is useful when you want to explore more than a download listing: its official pages cover mods, games, news, files, and downloads. Browse the mods index for a project, or look for the relevant game and its community material. The index displayed 37,360 results in a crawl about three weeks before October 7, 2026; that is a dynamic result count, not a stable, audited total.
ModDB may also be worth checking alongside Nexus for an older game or a large community project if you are unsure where its current official files live. That is a practical search strategy, not evidence that ModDB has a more complete catalog.

How to choose a site for a particular mod
- Search for the exact game and mod on both sites. Availability and quality vary by project; the figures each site publishes do not establish which has the better catalog for your game.
- Identify the current project page. Check who maintains it and whether it links to the file you need. For a Collection, remember that Nexus says it references mods rather than bundling their files.
- Confirm compatibility before downloading. Read the supported game version, prerequisites, installation instructions, and any author-maintained support information on the mod page.
- Choose the workflow that fits. Use Vortex when its documented Nexus integration suits your setup; otherwise follow the mod’s stated installation method. Do not assume a ModDB listing has a built-in manager.
- Review the file page and its context. Check the author history, file details, comments, and instructions. A listing on a platform is not a guarantee of safety or approval.
What the available comparisons do—and do not—show
The cited information comes from current official descriptions and policies, not hands-on tests. It does not establish which site has faster downloads, fewer malicious files, better uptime or support, or the strongest catalog for a particular game. Features, mod availability, counts, policies, and membership terms can change, so check the live pages and the specific mod listing before deciding.
