“Earbuds that spy on your brain signals” refers to Smartbuds, an EEG-sensing product from NextSense, a company WIRED described as born at Google and spun out of Alphabet’s X division. The earbuds are designed to measure electrical patterns associated with brain activity and use them for sleep and focus features—not to read thoughts. NextSense markets Smartbuds as a wellness product, not a medical diagnostic or treatment device.
What are the brain-sensing earbuds?
NextSense is the company behind the headline. WIRED described it as born at Google and spun out of Alphabet’s X; MD+DI reports that the spinout took place in 2020 and that the company is based in Mountain View, California. WIRED’s 2022 profile covered the company’s origins, while MD+DI’s February 2026 account describes its product launch.
NextSense currently lists Smartbuds for $299. The company says the earbuds have six dry-contact EEG sensors and features for sleep, meditation, and daytime focus. Its site also lists a 1,000 Hz sampling rate and a weight of 5 grams as product specifications. These are manufacturer-provided details, not independent measurements. NextSense’s product and FAQ pages
What do the earbuds actually measure?
EEG, short for electroencephalography, records electrical potentials at electrodes and uses the resulting signals to characterize patterns associated with brain activity. NextSense says Smartbuds can detect patterns such as sleep depth or transitions and adapt audio in real time. That is a claim about classifying broad patterns or states; it is not evidence that the earbuds decode a person’s private thoughts.

NextSense’s FAQ puts it plainly: “No. EEG detects patterns like sleep depth or transitions—not thoughts, memories, or emotions.” The company’s explanation is consistent with the distinction between measuring electrical signals and interpreting them as specific mental content. “Spy” therefore overstates what the described product does.
How reliable is ear-based EEG?
Putting EEG sensors in earbuds makes the hardware portable and familiar, but it does not remove the practical challenges of capturing a weak electrical signal. Electrode contact, fit, and movement can affect recordings. WIRED’s account of ear-EEG described the approach as promising while also noting researchers’ questions about whether small sensors could capture signals reliably.

A separate 2026 U.S. patent application assigned to Neurable describes in-ear electrodes and possible use of a contact microphone, accelerometer, or gyroscope to identify movement artifacts. That document concerns another company’s proposed system; it does not establish how NextSense designed Smartbuds or how well either product performs. The Neurable patent application
What do the reported sleep results show?
MD+DI reports that NextSense described a controlled beta period spanning 106 nights, during which Smartbuds increased slow-wave activity. The same account says nearly 50% of participants reported “better” or “much better” sleep and improved morning recovery; 69% of participants familiar with earbuds rated the sound superior; and the company had collected more than 1,000 nights of real-world EEG data across beta cohorts. These are figures attributed to the company by MD+DI, not independent findings.

The MD+DI account does not provide enough methodological detail to assess participant numbers, control conditions, statistical analysis, durability, or clinical significance. The reported results therefore do not establish that Smartbuds treat insomnia or improve health outcomes, nor do they show what an individual buyer should expect.
Is this a medical device?
NextSense describes Smartbuds as a wellness product, not a device for diagnosing or treating a clinical condition. The company’s Head of Product, Caitlin Shure, PhD, told MD+DI: “We’re not claiming to diagnose or treat any clinical conditions — no claims around insomnia, sleep apnea, or anything like that. It’s truly a wellness product.” Anyone concerned about a sleep or health problem should not treat a consumer EEG feature as a substitute for professional medical advice or evaluation.

What happens to brain data?
NextSense says data sharing is off by default, information is encrypted and stored securely, and data is anonymized before leaving the device. The company also says users can delete data in the app. Those are the vendor’s stated practices; they should not be mistaken for an independent privacy or security audit. NextSense’s product and FAQ pages
For a buyer, the practical privacy questions are what information the app collects, what is transmitted off-device, who can access it, and what deletion covers. The company’s published statements provide some answers, but the reviewed sources do not independently verify the implementation.

Is this the same as Google Pixel Buds Attention Alerts?
No. Google’s experimental Attention Alerts feature for supported Pixel Buds detects sounds such as a baby crying, a dog barking, or an emergency-vehicle siren. Google says supported sound detection happens locally and that it does not collect the data. That is sound detection, not EEG sensing, and it is separate from NextSense’s Smartbuds. Google’s Pixel Buds Attention Alerts help page
What should you take away?
NextSense Smartbuds are consumer earbuds that the company says use six EEG sensors for sleep and focus-related features. They are not described as reading thoughts, and the company does not claim they diagnose or treat sleep disorders. The available sleep figures are company-reported and do not establish clinical efficacy. Consider the limits of ear-based sensing and the distinction between vendor privacy claims and independent verification when deciding whether the product suits you.
