Microsoft has officially announced Project Helix, its next-generation Xbox console, but the detailed specifications circulating online remain unconfirmed. Xbox says Helix will play Xbox console and PC games, use a custom AMD chip, and target a major leap in ray tracing. The often-cited “Magnus” chip figures come from a 2025 leak—not Microsoft—and have not been verified as Helix hardware.
What Microsoft has confirmed about Project Helix
At GDC in March 2026, Microsoft introduced Project Helix as its next-generation first-party Xbox console. Xbox Vice President of Next Generation Jason Ronald said it is “designed to play your Xbox console and PC games.” That describes the platform’s intended direction; Microsoft has not yet specified which PC storefronts it will support or published a full compatibility list. Xbox Wire’s GDC announcement and Microsoft Game Dev’s developer update are the company’s primary descriptions.

Custom AMD silicon and ray tracing
Microsoft confirms that Helix is powered by a custom AMD system-on-chip, co-designed for next-generation DirectX and FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR). Xbox says it is targeting an “order of magnitude leap in ray tracing performance and capability,” and describes intelligence integrated into the graphics and compute pipeline.
Those are platform goals and Microsoft’s performance claims, not independently measured results. The announcement does not disclose the final CPU or GPU architecture, core counts, memory capacity, storage specifications, retail performance, or a frame-rate target.

Backward compatibility commitment
Xbox says it is committed to keeping games from four generations of Xbox consoles playable for years to come. That is a broad commitment, not a game-by-game compatibility list. Microsoft has not yet identified which individual titles or features will be supported on Helix.
What are the rumored upgrades to the new Xbox?
The widely repeated “Magnus” figures come from a July 18, 2025 Tom’s Guide report about an alleged AMD Zen 6 APU. The report attributed the information to Moore’s Law is Dead and said the chip could be for either the next Xbox or the PS6. It also cited a separate leaker’s view that Magnus might be the Xbox chip, while cautioning that the claims should not be treated as gospel.

| Reported leak detail | What the report claimed | Status |
|---|---|---|

| CPU cores | 11 total: three Zen 6 cores plus eight Zen 6 cores | Attributed leak claim; not confirmed by Microsoft |
Microsoft’s later confirmation of a custom AMD chip for Project Helix does not verify the Magnus codename or any of these figures. It also does not establish that the reported APU is the Helix chip or that its alleged configuration will appear in a retail console. Treat specific leaked architecture, core counts, bus width, die size, memory, price, and performance targets as unconfirmed.
When is the next Xbox coming out?
Microsoft says it plans to ship Project Helix alpha hardware to developers beginning in 2027. That is a developer-hardware milestone, not an announced date for consumers to buy the console. Windows Central reported in February 2026 that AMD CEO Lisa Su said the semi-custom SoC was progressing to support a 2027 launch, but characterized that timing as a best-case scenario and reported that Microsoft had not made a firm internal commitment. The cited reports do not establish a retail launch window.

Microsoft has not announced a consumer release date or price in the cited material. GameSpot’s March 2026 roundup likewise reports that neither has been disclosed. Until Microsoft provides those details, dates beyond the developer-alpha plan and any price figures should be treated as estimates or rumors, not confirmed specifications.

Project Helix is one part of a wider Xbox hardware plan spanning consoles, handhelds, PCs, cloud gaming, and accessories. Microsoft says AMD is co-engineering silicon across that portfolio. This context helps explain why Xbox is emphasizing play across console and PC games, but it does not establish that Helix runs a standard desktop version of Windows or supports every PC storefront. Xbox’s GDC announcement also says Xbox Mode will begin rolling out to Windows 11 in select markets from April 2026, providing a full-screen, controller-optimized experience while retaining Windows openness. That is a Windows feature, not a specification for Helix.

For developers, Microsoft Game Dev said in March 2026 that more than 5,000 developers were building for Xbox. Xbox Wire separately reported more than 1,500 games in the Xbox Play Anywhere catalog and 500 development teams that had shipped games with Play Anywhere. These are ecosystem figures, not evidence of Helix hardware capabilities or a promise that every title will work on it.
