A covert remote-control tool targeting macOS was advertised on a Russian cybercrime forum in 2023, according to SecurityWeek’s report on a warning from cybersecurity company Guardz. The reporting describes the seller’s claims; it does not establish confirmed infections or verify that the tool worked as advertised.
What is hVNC malware?
VNC is a technology for remotely controlling a computer. In ordinary remote support, the person using the computer knows that someone is connected. Hidden VNC, or hVNC, is designed to conceal that remote control from the user. SecurityWeek described this distinction in its August 2, 2023 report.
Guardz said the advertised macOS tool appeared intended to give an attacker covert access while stealing credentials and personal or financial information. That was an assessment of its apparent purpose, not a report of documented victims.
What did the seller claim the macOS tool could do?
The forum seller, posting under the handle RastaFarEye, advertised several capabilities, as relayed by SecurityWeek and Guardz:

Guardz also reported that the seller claimed to have tested the tool on macOS versions 10 through 13.2 and that it had been updated as recently as July 13, 2023. These are seller claims reported by Guardz, not independently verified compatibility or update findings. The sources do not provide a technical sample analysis, hashes, network indicators, or evidence that the advertised functions operated as described.

What macOS protections are relevant?
Apple describes several layers of malware protection in its macOS security documentation. They are general platform protections; the cited sources do not confirm that Apple detects this specific hVNC tool.

Treat unexpected links, attachments, and software offers cautiously, and avoid installing apps or packages from sources you cannot trust. Built-in macOS protections provide layers of defense, but they do not make an untrusted download safe.
