A research instrument called TreePol distinguished photosynthetic vegetation from nonliving targets at distances of up to a few kilometers in field measurements. It did not detect alien life: the result is a terrestrial demonstration of a technique researchers hope may one day help search for life elsewhere.
What is the “gadget” that detects life from a distance?
TreePol is a dedicated circular spectropolarimeter built for research, not a consumer gadget. It measures circularly polarized light reflected from a target. In a 2019 field study, researchers used it to distinguish photosynthetic life from abiotic matter at distances of up to a few kilometers. The paper describes the measurements as field observations, where changing illumination and moving targets make the work more difficult than laboratory measurements. Read the study record in PubMed.
How can reflected light indicate life?
The method looks for a pattern in polarized light associated with homochirality, a consistent “handedness” in certain molecules found in biochemical life. The researchers describe homochirality as a potentially distinctive property of life, and the resulting fractional circular polarization as a candidate biosignature. TreePol measures that signal in light reflected from a target; it does not directly image organisms or identify individual cells.
This is a promising way to distinguish the vegetation tested in the study from abiotic targets, not a universal test for every possible organism or environment. A signal associated with known biochemical life is a candidate clue, rather than proof that any arbitrary target contains life.

How did the research develop after TreePol?
Researchers adapted the TreePol design into FlyPol for measurements from a fast-moving aerial platform. The published airborne work extends the evidence from ground-based field observations to observations of Earth landscapes from the air; it is not evidence of detection from space.
In an instrumentation update dated January 2025, the SenseLife team described FlyPol+ as adding linear-polarization capability, reported two FlyPol+ instruments in use, and said a far-red to near-infrared version called FlyPol Red was under development. Does TreePol detect aliens?
No. The 2019 study measured terrestrial targets, and the later FlyPol work observed Earth landscapes from an aircraft. The papers discuss extraterrestrial life detection as a potential application of the technique, not as a result. The cited sources also do not establish an operational satellite or space deployment.
Nor does the study justify an unlimited “no false positives” claim. It reports discrimination in the measurements made; that is different from proving that the signal can identify all life, or rule out all nonliving explanations, across every setting.

Why does the distance claim matter?
“Up to a few kilometers” is the distance reported for the TreePol field measurements. The paper does not give a precise maximum range in the cited description, so it should not be converted into an exact kilometer figure or presented as a tested alien-detection distance. Its importance is narrower but real: researchers showed that a light-polarization biosignature could be measured from terrestrial vegetation at substantial distances under field conditions.
