Set up your Chromebook, update it, and check that your files and essential apps will work before you rely on it. These 10 tips cover the first steps for a new or returning Chromebook owner. Google’s support pages cited here were checked on September 28, 2026; the original 2025 Christmas wording is not a current-year claim.
1. Set up power, language, and Wi-Fi
Turn on the Chromebook and follow the on-screen setup. Choose your language and keyboard layout, connect to a network, and accept the terms. You can also enable accessibility options during setup if they make the device easier to use. Google says setup requires internet access. Sign in with a Google Account, or choose Guest browsing if you want to use the Chromebook without signing in. See Google’s Chromebook setup instructions.
2. Sign in with the account you plan to use
Use the Google Account whose Chrome data you want on this device. Once you sign in, Chrome can sync associated bookmarks, extensions, and apps. This does not automatically move all the files from an old computer, so plan that separately. If the Chromebook is shared or managed by a school or workplace, check who administers it and which account you are expected to use.
3. Install ChromeOS updates and restart
When connected to the internet, a Chromebook automatically checks for and downloads operating system updates. To check manually, open Settings > About ChromeOS. If an update is ready, follow the prompt to restart and finish installing it. Google advises connecting the Chromebook to power while updating to reduce interruptions. See Google’s update instructions.

- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
4. Make a plan for files from your old computer
Chrome bookmarks, apps, and extensions associated with your Google Account can sync when you sign in, but personal files need their own transfer plan. Google lists Google Drive, other cloud storage, and compatible external storage as options. Choose based on what you already use, how many or how large your files are, and whether you have a reliable internet connection.
- Cloud storage: Useful when your files are already online or you can upload them from the old computer and download or access them on the Chromebook. Uploading or downloading requires internet access.
- USB flash drive or external hard drive: Useful for moving files directly, especially when internet access is limited. Check that the storage device works with ChromeOS and that the Chromebook has a compatible port; an adapter may be needed.

5. Learn where files are in the Files app
Open the Files app to browse local files, Google Drive, and connected storage. When a USB drive or external hard drive is connected, find it in the Files app and copy the items you need to My files or another suitable destination. Wait for copying to finish before disconnecting the device. The exact ports and supported accessories vary by Chromebook model.
6. Check app compatibility before you depend on an app
Chromebooks commonly use web apps, and Google points users to apps in the Chrome Web Store. That does not mean every Windows or Mac program has a ChromeOS equivalent, or that a similarly named app will support the same workflow. Before switching, identify the exact software and tasks you rely on—such as editing a particular file type, connecting to a work service, or using a specialized peripheral—and confirm that they work on your Chromebook.

7. Prepare the work you need to do offline
Some tasks can be done without an internet connection, but offline support depends on the app and content. Google gives Gmail Offline and Google Docs as examples. Set up the relevant app or make the required files available offline while you still have a connection; do not assume that every website or cloud file will open when Wi-Fi is unavailable. Google’s Chromebook switching guide outlines offline-use examples.
8. Connect an Android phone if the extra features are useful
Pairing an Android phone can enable features such as synced chat notifications, access to photos and messages, a phone-network connection, and phone-based Chromebook unlock. Google specifies ChromeOS 71 or later and Android 6 or later for its phone-connection feature set. Work- or school-managed devices may restrict some features. Follow Google’s instructions for connecting an Android phone if you want to use them.

If you are unsure where a control is, use the search field in Settings to look for it. Take a moment to review privacy and security options that matter to you rather than assuming the defaults match your preferences. Google’s settings guide describes the available categories.

Find the Chromebook’s update schedule
Automatic update support varies by model. On the Chromebook, open Settings > About ChromeOS > Additional details to find its update schedule. Google’s policy says eligible devices released before 2021 can receive up to 10 years of automatic updates from the platform’s release; that is not a guarantee for every Chromebook. Check the schedule for your specific model. Google also notes that extended updates for eligible older devices involve a trade-off: Android apps and the Play Store are no longer available. See Google’s guidance on using or upgrading an old Chromebook and its extended updates support information.

Verify USB4 or Thunderbolt support before buying accessories
USB4 and Thunderbolt accessories work only when both the Chromebook and the accessory support the relevant standard. Check the specifications for both devices before choosing a dock or other accessory; a matching connector alone does not establish compatibility. Google says ChromeOS enables memory-access protection by default. Its USB4 and Thunderbolt guidance explains the compatibility requirement.
