No. Neuralink’s Blindsight program received FDA Breakthrough Device Designation, not approval or clearance to sell the implant—and the designation is not evidence that it has restored anyone’s vision. Neuralink announced the designation on September 17, 2024; FDA says devices in the program must still meet its safety and effectiveness standards before they can be authorized for marketing.
What FDA designated—and what that means
Neuralink’s September 17, 2024 update says the company received Breakthrough Device Designation from the FDA for Blindsight. The FDA program is voluntary and is intended to support the development, assessment, and review of certain devices. It can give a developer opportunities to get feedback from FDA experts and prioritized review of future submissions.
That is a regulatory pathway, not a marketing decision. The FDA states: “Breakthrough Devices must meet the FDA’s rigorous standards for device safety and effectiveness in order to be authorized for marketing.” Designation alone does not authorize a device for sale or establish that it works.
Neuralink’s announcement uses the word “designation.” Calling it FDA “clearance” or “approval” overstates what the announcement says and may suggest a completed marketing review that it does not establish.

Does the designation mean Blindsight has cured blindness?
No. The designation does not demonstrate that Blindsight has restored vision, cured blindness, or produced a measured patient benefit. Neuralink describes Blindsight as a vision-restoration program, but a program’s aim is not evidence of an outcome.
To assess a vision-restoration claim, readers would need evidence of the device’s regulatory status, the stage and results of clinical testing, and the specific vision functions measured. The designation announcement supplies none of those clinical results.

What is publicly established about human testing?
A February 2026 SEC filing by another company characterizes Blindsight as a cortical-stimulation vision-restoration program and says that, based on public information available as of February 2026, Neuralink had not publicly disclosed FDA IDE authorization for first-in-human cortical-stimulation studies for a vision-restoration implant. This is a time-bounded statement in a third-party filing—not direct confirmation from the FDA, and not a claim about undisclosed or later activity.
An FDA IDE, or Investigational Device Exemption, concerns authorization to conduct a clinical investigation; it is distinct from authorization to market a device. The available designation announcement by itself does not establish that human testing has begun or that participants have regained vision.

Why Neuralink’s PRIME study is not evidence for Blindsight
Neuralink’s PRIME study is a separate investigational brain-computer interface program. Neuralink says PRIME has an FDA IDE and is intended to let people with quadriplegia control external devices. That status and purpose do not establish authorization for Blindsight studies or evidence that Blindsight restores vision.

FDA program-wide figures provide context, not a prediction for Blindsight. As of June 30, 2026, the FDA reported 1,320 Breakthrough Device designations and 210 marketing authorizations consistent with a Breakthrough designation. These are totals across the program; neither figure is a Blindsight result, and the counts do not show that designation means a device will cure a condition.
