If you need to control outbound cloud traffic, NAT alone is not a security policy: it provides connectivity or address translation, while filtering and inspection require separate controls. Depending on your needs, alternatives or complements to a cloud network firewall include DNS filtering, private service endpoints, network rules, and explicit proxies.
What do ingress and egress mean?
Direction only makes sense relative to a boundary. For a VM, ingress is traffic arriving at that VM and egress is traffic leaving it. For a subnet or VPC, the same packet may be egress from one boundary and ingress to another. Name the boundary before defining a rule or troubleshooting a connection.
Google Cloud describes firewall policy rules as applying to either incoming (ingress) or outgoing (egress) connections; a rule is directional, not a single rule for both directions. Its VPC firewall documentation also covers firewall rules and their behavior. Rule priority matters: a higher-priority decision can take precedence over a lower-priority one. Google Cloud firewall policies and Google Cloud VPC firewall rules.
Why isn’t NAT an egress firewall?
A NAT gateway or other NAT function translates addresses or provides a path for traffic; that does not by itself mean it evaluates whether a destination, protocol, or application is permitted. Security filtering needs policy rules or an inspection control. Microsoft cautions that load balancers and NAT gateways are intended for traffic distribution and connectivity, not necessarily security. Microsoft Azure Well-Architected networking guidance.

These functions can be combined in one routed design, but they are not interchangeable. A workload might send traffic through a firewall for policy enforcement and then through NAT for internet connectivity. Conversely, a NAT path without a filtering control should not be described as an egress security policy.
What can I use instead of a cloud network firewall for egress?
There is no single substitute for every firewall use case. The right control depends on what you need to match—network addresses and ports, domains, application behavior, or proxy requests—and which traffic must be covered. These controls can also be layered.

| Control | What it can control | Deployment and limitations to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Network rules or a cloud network firewall | Traffic policy at the network layer; a firewall may also provide inspection. | Can be deployed locally or in a shared inspection path. Check protocol coverage, rule ownership, throughput, routing, and whether the design must also cover ingress or east-west traffic. |
| DNS filtering | Whether workloads can resolve disallowed domains. | Useful when policy is expressed by domain rather than only by IP and port. It is a DNS-layer control, not a replacement for every kind of network inspection. |
| Private service endpoints | Selected trusted cloud-service traffic can use a private path rather than the public internet egress path. | Applies to supported services and selected traffic; it does not govern all destinations or replace a general egress policy. |
| Explicit forward proxy | Requests that use the proxy can be governed using proxy semantics and policy. | Requires a proxy-aware workload or configuration and a routed, available proxy service. Confirm which traffic actually traverses it. |
| NAT gateway | Address translation or outbound connectivity. | Do not treat address translation as filtering or inspection. Pair it with an appropriate security control when policy enforcement is required. |
AWS documents Route 53 Resolver DNS Firewall for domain-resolution filtering, AWS Network Firewall for network traffic inspection, VPC endpoints for keeping selected AWS-service traffic off the internet path, and Gateway Load Balancer with third-party firewalls. Its guidance also describes Network Firewall Proxy as a managed explicit forward-proxy option in preview; service status and availability can change, so check the current AWS documentation before choosing it. How should I compare egress architectures?
Compare designs against the same workload, traffic paths, and policy requirements. A centralized design is not automatically cheaper or safer, and a decentralized one is not automatically simpler. The meaningful differences are where traffic travels, who manages the policy, and what fails together.

| Decision factor | Centralized inspection | Per-VPC or workload egress |
|---|---|---|
| Policy and ownership | Can provide a shared inspection point and common rules; requires clear ownership of shared policies, exceptions, logs, and incident response. | Can keep policy close to workloads; distributes rule management and operational responsibility across teams or VPCs. |
| Routing and latency | Traffic takes a transit path to shared inspection, adding routing complexity and potentially extra hops and latency. | Can reduce transit hops by keeping the egress path local, though each workload environment still needs its own routing and controls. |
| Failure scope | A shared path can affect multiple workloads if it fails; redundancy and monitoring are important. | Can bound an egress failure to a workload VPC, while requiring reliable components in each environment. |
| Cost drivers | May include firewall processing, transit or Cloud WAN processing, NAT, and data transfer. Shared infrastructure does not guarantee lower cost. | May include per-environment firewall or NAT components and data transfer. Actual cost depends on paths, traffic volumes, and service pricing. |
| Inspection and throughput | Concentrates inspection and capacity planning at shared services; rules and inspection depth can affect performance. | Spreads capacity and configuration across environments; local placement may avoid some transit processing. |
| Coverage and consistency | Can centralize internet-bound inspection, but verify coverage for cloud-service, east-west, ingress, and IPv6 traffic separately. | Can provide local control, but consistency across VPCs and address families requires deliberate policy management. |
AWS explicitly frames centralized and decentralized IPv4 egress as a tradeoff across cost, operations, failure domain, inspection, dual-stack consistency, latency, and fit. Azure likewise calls out egress-path reliability and SNAT port exhaustion as issues to examine. Egress volume, transit, NAT, firewall processing, inspection work, and data transfer can all affect cost or performance; estimate them against the actual workload rather than assuming one layout always wins. What do the cloud-provider examples show?
Google Cloud: treat ingress and egress as separate rule directions
Google Cloud’s documentation defines ingress as incoming connections from sources to Google Cloud targets and egress as outgoing traffic from a target resource to a destination. Because direction and priority matter, check both the rule’s direction and its precedence when diagnosing why a flow is allowed or denied. The cited Google material establishes those firewall-rule behaviors; it does not provide a comparably detailed survey of proxy and centralized-egress alternatives.

Azure: central firewall oversight is one option, not a NAT feature
Microsoft recommends sending internet-bound egress through a firewall when centralized oversight and control are required. Azure Firewall can serve that role, with network security groups and user-defined routes as parts of the wider control architecture. Azure’s Well-Architected guidance states: “For egress, send all internet-bound traffic through a single firewall that provides enhanced oversight, governance, and control of traffic.” That is guidance for the centralized-control case, not a claim that every workload must use one architecture. Review the cited Azure networking guidance and mission-critical networking guidance for routing, performance, reliability, and SNAT considerations.
AWS: combine controls according to traffic type
AWS’s documented toolkit separates domain filtering, network inspection, private service access, and proxying rather than treating them as the same job. For centralized IPv4 internet egress, its pattern routes workload traffic through Transit Gateway or Cloud WAN to a shared egress VPC, through inspection, then NAT and an internet gateway. Placing inspection before NAT preserves the original VPC source address, which AWS identifies as useful for per-VPC policy and forensic analysis. AWS recommends considering regional shared egress rather than cross-region routing when cost and latency make the latter unattractive, and using redundant inspection to avoid a single point of failure. How should I account for IPv6?
Do not assume an IPv4 egress architecture applies unchanged to IPv6. In the AWS design described in its networking guidance, IPv6 egress remains per VPC through an egress-only internet gateway; the guide says AWS has no managed NAT66 alternative. That is a provider-specific statement from the cited guidance, not a universal rule for cloud platforms, and service behavior can change. Verify the current IPv4 and IPv6 options for the exact provider and service before finalizing routes or policy.
How do I choose and operate an outbound-control design?
- Define the boundary and required flows. State whether each rule governs a VM, subnet, VPC, or workload. List internet-bound, cloud-service, inter-VPC, ingress, and other traffic that needs control.
- Choose the policy layer. Use network rules for network-level decisions, DNS filtering for domain-resolution policy, an explicit proxy when proxy behavior is required, or private endpoints for selected supported cloud services. Add inspection where the risk and policy require it.
- Choose local or shared placement. Decide whether one team should own a shared inspection path or workload teams should operate local egress. Include routing complexity, failure scope, operational ownership, and exception handling in that choice.
- Map the full route before deployment. Identify the path through firewall or proxy, transit services, NAT, and internet gateway or private endpoint. Confirm that intended flows traverse the control and that return traffic and routing are supported.
- Estimate capacity, reliability, and cost. Model expected traffic volume and paths, firewall and NAT processing, transit charges, data transfer, and inspection needs. Plan redundancy and monitoring for shared services; check SNAT capacity and egress reliability where applicable.
- Validate address families and governance. Confirm IPv4 and IPv6 behavior separately. Assign owners for allowlists, shared rules, logs, exceptions, and response to blocked or suspicious traffic.
The practical choice is the least complex design that enforces the required policy across the traffic you actually need to govern. Use NAT for the path or translation it provides, and select filtering, inspection, DNS controls, private endpoints, or proxy policy for the security job each is designed to do.
