Netop Remote Control 12.82’s main appeal, as reviewed by IT Pro in August 2020, was the option to combine cloud-based support with on-premises services rather than commit to only one deployment model. The trade-off was a split experience: a browser console handled basic tasks, while the full Guest application provided the broader remote-support toolkit. The review is historical, not a current product or pricing guide; Netop later rebranded the product as Impero Connect.

What “best of both worlds” meant in the 2020 review

Reviewer Dave Mitchell framed the product for businesses torn between cloud-hosted and on-premises support: “With Netop’s Remote Control you don’t need to choose one or the other.” The flexibility described was a deployment and licensing proposition: an annual subscription for cloud-based support could be combined with perpetual licensing for on-premises services. The review’s headline phrase was an assessment of that flexibility, not a measured comparison or proof that the product was best in its category. IT Pro’s review, published 25 August 2020, is the basis for these observations.

Those arrangements, product names, and terms are historical. Netop’s release history lists later releases and says the product was rebranded as Impero Connect after Impero’s acquisition.

What changed in version 12.82

IT Pro highlighted email notifications for connection attempts, 64-bit macOS and Linux agents, and improved screen scaling in the browser-based client. It also described Netop OnDemand as an optional add-on for on-demand connections and iOS device access.

#1 Best Overall
Universal Remote Control MX-450 Custom Programmable Remote Control with On-Screen Macro Editing.
  • Can use Narrow Band width RF or IR to control all devices.
  • Has a color screen for easy viewing.
  • Controls optional URC lighting by Lutron¿.
  • Can be programmed by the end user.
  • This remote can control up to 18 devices.

Netop’s release notes give the email approval feature a more specific name: Confirm Access via Email (CAvE). The vendor says designated users could approve a remote-control session by responding to an automated notification. The same official release history notes Linux and macOS host stability improvements and minor fixes in 12.82. These are claims about that release, not evidence of current feature availability.

Browser console or full Guest application?

The review distinguishes the browser-based console from the full Guest application. The browser console provided a more limited set of remote-control functions, including host lock, restart, and shutdown. Guest was the more capable technician interface:

  • File and user communication: file transfer, messaging, and text and audio chat.
  • Remote administration: remote command and application execution, Registry editing, and keyboard and mouse controls.
  • Screen sharing: a Demonstrate tool for sharing a screen.
  • Access and network use: registered hosts were accessible from the Guest interface, and the reviewer reported a LAN profile for an on-site installation.

That difference matters when evaluating the product: a browser login was not equivalent to having the full technician toolset. The review’s descriptions reflect the interface and version it examined in 2020.

Security and access controls reported by the reviewer

IT Pro reported that sessions used 256-bit AES encryption. It also described customizable host installation packages that could restrict features, optional multi-factor authentication, and per-user or per-group permissions and roles. Those permissions could limit functions such as keyboard and mouse control, chat, and file transfer. This is a summary of controls reported in the review, not an independent security audit or a current security certification. See the review for its original context.

Setup experience: Windows versus Mac

In the 2020 test, the reviewer found Windows deployment through the web portal straightforward. Mac host deployment took more manual work:

  1. Install the DMG manually on each host Mac.
  2. Edit the host configuration file to add the portal address and account enrollment key.
  3. Complete the setup and connect; the reviewer reported that it then worked as expected.

This is the reviewer’s experience with the version and setup examined at the time, not a current deployment test or a guarantee about later releases.

OnDemand and iOS access

The review described OnDemand as a paid add-on costing £187 per technician per year at the time of the 2020 review. A user provided a unique nine-digit session code to start an on-demand connection. For iOS, the app let technicians view the device screen and guide the user, but did not allow remote control; the review attributed that limitation to Apple’s security model. The price and feature terms are historical and should not be treated as current availability or pricing. IT Pro’s review is the source for these details.

What to check before considering a current deployment

Version 12.82 is not the latest release listed in Netop’s support history. The vendor’s history, updated 24 April 2025, includes later 12.x and 13.x versions and records the change to the Impero Connect name. Compatibility is version-specific: for example, Netop’s operating-system table says Windows XP support continued through version 12.84. Do not assume that a compatibility statement for an older release applies to a later one.

The vendor’s Windows technical specifications lists Windows and Windows Server platforms, including legacy systems. That list alone does not establish that every component works on every listed operating system: the version-by-version compatibility table notes cases where the Guest module is unsupported. For a real deployment, verify the exact product version, operating system, and module combination in current vendor documentation. The vendor’s manuals and guides index is a starting point for its documentation.

Who the reviewed product suited

Based on the review, the product’s hybrid model was most relevant to organizations that wanted cloud-based support alongside on-premises services, and that valued a full Guest client for technician tasks. The practical comparisons to weigh were:

  • Deployment: cloud and on-premises options versus choosing a single model.
  • Technician workflow: basic browser-console controls versus the fuller Guest application.
  • Operating-system setup: the portal-based Windows deployment versus the additional manual Mac configuration reported in the review.
  • On-demand support: core remote support versus the separately priced OnDemand add-on described at the time.

These distinctions explain the 2020 review’s favorable “best of both worlds” framing, but they do not establish how Impero Connect performs or is licensed today. The evidence here supports a historical review of Netop Remote Control 12.82, not a current ranking against competitors.
