If you need websites or apps to see a Dutch IP address, use a VPN service with an exit server in the Netherlands. Smart DNS is for accessing content supported by that provider; it does not necessarily give you a Dutch IP. The two tools solve different problems, and neither guarantees that a streaming service will accept the connection.
VPN services vs Smart DNS: what is the difference?

The table describes the cited providers’ explanations, not independent product testing. Also distinguish a VPN provider’s branded features from generic Smart DNS: NordVPN, for example, documents SmartDNS for supported smart TVs separately from SmartPlay, which it describes as working as part of a NordVPN connection. When should you choose a Netherlands VPN?
Choose a VPN with an explicitly listed Netherlands exit server if the requirement is for a destination to see a Dutch IP address. Proton VPN says users can select a regular Netherlands server as an exit point for a Dutch IP. Proton VPN Netherlands servers
A server-location page establishes that a provider lists an endpoint; it does not independently confirm how every geolocation database will classify its address. For instance, Smart DNS Proxy lists an Amsterdam VPN endpoint, but that listing is not an independent geolocation check or proof that a service will accept it. Smart DNS Proxy server locations

A VPN is also the relevant choice if encryption or concealing your ordinary public IP from a destination is part of your requirement. The cited providers describe those as VPN functions, but a VPN should not be treated as a guarantee of anonymity or universal protection. Check the chosen provider’s current policy and configuration details.
When might Smart DNS be the better fit?
Consider Smart DNS when your goal is to access particular regional websites or media supported by that provider, and you do not need a Dutch IP address or an encrypted connection. SmartyDNS says its Smart DNS leaves the customer’s IP unchanged and does not encrypt traffic. Its FAQ also says customers may need to validate their current IP and still need a separate paid subscription for paid streaming services. SmartyDNS Smart DNS FAQ

Support is provider- and device-specific. Before subscribing, check the provider’s current setup instructions for the actual television, console, phone, or computer you plan to use. Do not assume one setup method or supported-service list applies across Smart DNS products.
How to choose for your device and target service
- Write down the outcome you need. If an app, website, or other destination must see a Dutch IP, look for a VPN that explicitly lists Netherlands exit servers. If you only want access to a supported regional service without changing your IP, check Smart DNS coverage.
- Check privacy and encryption requirements. Smart DNS, as described by SmartyDNS, does not hide or change your IP and does not encrypt traffic. For a VPN, review the provider’s documentation and ensure its app or configuration is active on the device being used.
- Verify compatibility on the intended device. Read current provider instructions for your model and operating system, and confirm whether the target service is supported. Product documentation may change.
- Check the target service’s current behavior. Streaming platforms may identify and block VPN servers, and Smart DNS only applies to services its provider supports. Neither option guarantees access.
- Compare performance claims cautiously. No independent comparative speed measurement for Dutch VPN versus Smart DNS is established here. SmartyDNS’s assertion that Smart DNS does not affect speed is a provider claim, not a comparative benchmark.
What to try if a streaming service rejects the connection
VPN Nederland says a streaming app may detect and block VPN servers and suggests trying another server. This may help, but it is not a guarantee; acceptance can vary by platform and over time. VPN Nederland help

If the target service is not working with Smart DNS, check its current availability in the provider’s supported-service documentation, confirm that the device is configured as instructed, and follow any IP-validation steps the provider requires. Do not interpret a server location or subscription as proof of access.
