Its four Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports are useful for nearby wired devices. It is not, by itself, a conventional home mesh kit or a replacement for the router and upstream internet connection your network needs.
What the WAC564 is—and what it is not
NETGEAR describes the WAC564 as an “Insight Instant Mesh Multi-Mode Access Point.” It can extend a supported WAC540 or WAC564 mesh network, act as a mesh root, or work as a standalone access point. The datasheet also describes wireless bridge use and WiFi mesh with multiple SSIDs and VLANs. NETGEAR WAC564 datasheet
That distinction matters if you are shopping for a home mesh system. In the documented mesh topology, the root access point connects by wire to the existing network and provides the gateway path; an extender can connect to the root over wireless backhaul. The WAC564 supplies WiFi access and mesh functions, but the product documentation does not position it as a standalone internet router. Plan for an upstream router or gateway and an internet connection in the deployment. WAC564 User Manual
WAC564 specifications and what the numbers mean
| Feature | WAC564 specification |
|---|---|
| WiFi class | AC3000, 802.11ac, concurrent tri-band |
| 2.4 GHz radio rating | 400 Mbps |
| 5 GHz low-band radio rating | 867 Mbps |
| 5 GHz high-band radio rating | 1733 Mbps |
| Combined nominal radio rating | 3000 Mbps across the three bands |
| Ethernet | Four LAN ports; NETGEAR describes an integrated Gigabit Ethernet switch |
| Management | NETGEAR Insight app or web portal for Insight mesh |
| Mounting | Wall or ceiling |
The 3000 Mbps label is the sum of the three vendor-rated radio capabilities, not a promise that one client or an internet speed test will reach 3 Gbps. Actual client performance depends on the client radio, signal conditions, interference, network configuration, and the internet connection. The cited documentation provides specifications, not independent throughput, range, latency, roaming, or reliability test results. NETGEAR WAC564 User Manual
#1 Best Overall
- HIGH-DENSITY MESH PERFORMANCE: Tri-Band AC3000 speed, coupled with MU-MIMO technology, improves WiFI performance for up to 600 devices where no Ethernet cabling exists (WAC540 required for Mesh network)
- WIRED ETHERNET PORT: Plug in a printer, storage, or other nearby wired devices into the four 1 Gigabit ports for maximum speed
- AC POWERED: Simplifed deployment powered by the included power adapter
- LOCAL AND REMOTE MANAGEMENT: Includes 1 year FREE Insight subscription for remote management from anywhere, and no additional hardware or cloud key required. Setup, configure, and manage with the Insight app
- FLEXIBLE MOUNTING: Easy to securely install on the wall or a suspended ceiling with included hardware, or place on a tabletop
How its mesh deployment works
A mesh network needs at least one mesh-capable root access point and one or more extender access points. The root is wired into the network; an extender can communicate with it over WiFi backhaul. NETGEAR also documents standalone access-point operation, so a WAC564 does not have to be deployed as an extender. WAC564 User Manual
Insight is the documented management route for Instant Mesh, with monitoring and maintenance through NETGEAR’s mobile app or web portal, locally or remotely. Confirm the current Insight compatibility and service terms for your deployment; current subscription pricing or licensing duration is not established here. NETGEAR Insight

Compatibility and firmware checks
NETGEAR’s support guidance lists the WAC564 as a model that can function as either root or extender in an Insight Mesh network. For a mesh containing legacy WAC540 or WAC564 units, NETGEAR specifies firmware 9.5 or later. Check the current compatibility guidance and the installed units’ release notes before combining models. NETGEAR Insight Mesh compatibility guidance, updated June 18, 2026
Firmware notes for WAC540/WAC564 version 9.9.6.8 document an Instant Mesh issue that may cause an access point to select a non-optimum channel; the listed workaround is to configure a static channel. Those same release notes describe client interoperability caveats involving WPA3/WPA2 Personal, band steering, and captive portal behavior. These notes apply to that firmware version and should not be read as a description of every current release. Check the notes for the firmware actually installed before changing settings. - DEDICATED WIFI 6 ACCESS POINT FOR YOUR BUSINESS: Extends your wired network wirelessly for small offices, retail stores, and professional spaces. Requires an existing router or gateway and a wired ethernet connection. Cannot function as a repeater, extender, or mesh node.
- AX1800 DUAL-BAND FOR UP TO 30 ACTIVE DEVICES: Up to 1,800 Mbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Supports 128 registered client devices; up to 30 active simultaneously. Real-world speeds depend on your connected devices and network environment.
- POWERED BY YOUR NETWORK, NO POWER OUTLET REQUIRED: Connects to any 802.3af PoE-capable switch for single-cable power and data. No power adapter included in this SKU. If a PoE switch is not available, a compatible power adapter can be purchased separately.
- COMPACT DESIGN FOR OFFICES, RETAIL, AND PROFESSIONAL SPACES: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. indoors. Wall or T-bar ceiling mount kit included. Create up to 4 separate SSIDs to keep staff and guest networks isolated and secure. For indoor use in the United States only.
- CONFIGURE AND MANAGE FROM ANY WEB BROWSER: Connect to the management WiFi network printed on the product label, then navigate to aplogin.net to complete setup. A browser security warning during setup is expected behavior. Manage SSIDs, security, and devices from your browser at any time.
Who should consider the WAC564?
- Consider it if you need a business-oriented access point that can join an Insight-managed mesh, provide wireless access in standalone mode, or give nearby equipment wired connections through its four LAN ports.
- Check the fit carefully if you expect a simple consumer router-and-satellite kit: the WAC564’s documented role is an access point, and the mesh root connects to an existing network.
- Compare alternatives by backhaul design, supported mesh ecosystem, wired-port count, WiFi generation, management requirements, deployment role, and current firmware/support status—not by adding the advertised radio rates alone.
- Verify before buying or deploying that the Insight workflow, model compatibility, firmware, and any ongoing service terms suit your network.
Verdict
The WAC564 is best understood as a capable-on-paper business access point with flexible mesh roles and an unusually useful four-port wired switch for devices close to the unit. Its AC3000 rating describes aggregate radio capability, not tested single-client speed. It can make sense in an existing NETGEAR Insight deployment, but it is not a self-contained home mesh router, and firmware and ecosystem compatibility deserve attention.
