Titus is Netflix’s container management platform, built for the company’s AWS infrastructure and production workloads. Netflix’s public Titus repositories now display archival notices, including a control-plane repository archived on May 14, 2022; that does not establish whether Netflix still runs an internal version.
What is Titus?
Titus is a system for deploying and managing containerized applications across a fleet of machines. Netflix said it had already been using Titus in production before making its code public. Its workloads included streaming, recommendations, machine learning, big data, content encoding, and studio technology. The announcement’s authors described the release this way: “Today, we are open-sourcing Titus, our container management platform.” Netflix Technology Blog, April 18, 2018.
The project was shaped around Netflix’s own scale and infrastructure rather than presented as a generic container product. Netflix’s announcement said Titus was designed for thousands of applications across seven regionally isolated stacks and tens of thousands of EC2 virtual machines. Those are figures Netflix reported in 2018, not current measurements.
How Titus is architected
Netflix’s Titus overview says development began in 2015 and identifies Apache Mesos as the system’s cluster-management foundation. Mesos brokers fleet resources; Titus components schedule and operate container workloads on those resources.

- Titus Master: schedules work and manages agent pools. The overview describes a replicated master setup.
- Titus Agents: configure host resources, start containers, monitor tasks, and clean up after tasks finish.
- Gateway: accepts client requests through gRPC and REST APIs.
- ZooKeeper: supports leader election.
- Cassandra: persists master data.
The overview separately describes production use spanning thousands of EC2 instances and hundreds of thousands of containers daily. Its page does not state a publication date, so these figures should not be combined with the 2018 announcement’s weekly launch peak.
What made Titus closely tied to Netflix’s AWS environment?
Titus did more than start Docker containers on EC2. Netflix described integration with AWS networking and security, including network-interface and security-group management, and IAM roles delivered through an EC2 metadata proxy. The system also connected with autoscaling and used IP targets for Application Load Balancers. Within Netflix’s own software ecosystem, the announcement named Spinnaker for deployment, Eureka for service discovery, and Atlas for telemetry. These integrations suited Netflix’s infrastructure; they do not by themselves establish that Titus is a plug-and-play choice for a different organization.

What did Netflix report about Titus’s scale?
| Source and timeframe | Reported figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Netflix Technology Blog, April 18, 2018 | As many as three million containers launched per week | A peak reported in the 2018 open-source announcement, not a current operating figure. |
| Netflix Technology Blog, April 18, 2018 | Thousands of applications across seven regionally isolated stacks and tens of thousands of EC2 virtual machines | Historical figures from the announcement. |
| Netflix Open Source Titus overview; publication date not stated | Thousands of EC2 instances and hundreds of thousands of containers daily | A separate documentation snapshot with a different time unit; not directly comparable to the 2018 weekly peak. |
Is Titus still being developed?
The public repository status is the clearest current signal available in Netflix’s source repositories: the Titus control-plane repository says it was archived on May 14, 2022, and the Titus source repository also displays an archival notice. An archive notice means that the public repository is not presented as an actively maintained project there. It does not prove that Netflix stopped using Titus internally, nor does it reveal whether Netflix maintains private code.
Netflix’s 2018 announcement said the company hoped open-sourcing Titus would let others help the container community “absorb those technologies.” That statement records the goal at release; it is not evidence of present-day maintenance or support.

Netflix’s 2018 announcement mentioned Kubernetes, Mesosphere DC/OS, and Amazon ECS as platforms relevant to the container landscape at the time. The sources here do not provide a current, apples-to-apples comparison of performance, cost, or ease of adoption, so they cannot support ranking Titus against those products today.
