Netflix recommends this to help avoid interruptions when you travel or watch away from home. If Netflix blocks a device during a trip, you can request a temporary verification code—but that code expires after 15 minutes and is not a monthly pass.
How often do you need to connect to your Netflix Household Wi-Fi?
At least once a month, open the Netflix app while your device is connected to the Wi-Fi at your Netflix Household. Netflix gives this guidance as a way to avoid future interruptions while traveling or away from home. It does not mean that your device is permanently approved for a month, or that a travel code lasts a month. Netflix’s device-verification guidance explains the monthly recommendation.
What to do if Netflix blocks you while traveling
If a device is flagged as outside the Netflix Household, Netflix offers a temporary verification flow. The option you see depends on the device:
- TV or TV streaming device: Sign in and choose “I’m Traveling” when prompted.
- Phone or computer: Choose “Watch Temporarily.”
Follow the prompts to request a code. Netflix sends it to the account email address, or by text if no email address is on file. Enter the code as instructed to continue watching. Netflix says the code expires after 15 minutes. Each device also has a limit on code requests; Netflix’s help page does not give one universal request count or reset schedule. See Netflix’s instructions for temporary verification.

What Netflix means by a Household
Netflix defines a Household around the devices connected to the internet at the main place where the account is watched. It says it uses IP addresses, device IDs, and account activity to associate devices with a Household; it says it does not use GPS to determine a device’s precise physical location. Netflix explains how a Household is defined.
The monthly Wi-Fi check and temporary travel code are for away-from-home viewing, not a way to maintain ongoing access for someone outside the Household. Netflix says people outside the Household need their own account or can be added as an extra member. Availability and terms for extra members may depend on the account and location; consult Netflix’s Household guidance.

If Netflix has the wrong Household
If you have moved or changed the main viewing connection, use Netflix’s household-update process from a TV connected to the preferred or most-used internet connection. A phone or computer used during setup may need to be on the same Wi-Fi network as that TV. Follow Netflix’s steps to update a Household.
If you are simply traveling, the monthly home-network check is the preventive step; use the temporary verification option if Netflix still prompts you away from home. Do not keep requesting codes as a substitute for the account or extra-member option for someone who lives outside the Household.

Keep the screen limit separate from Household verification
Household verification is not the same as the number of devices that can stream at once. Netflix says the plan determines simultaneous viewing, with limits ranging from one to four screens. That plan limit does not replace the monthly recommendation to open Netflix on household Wi-Fi. Netflix’s device guidance covers adding devices and plan screen limits.
