NetBox Labs announced NetBox Assurance as available to customers on April 2, 2025. The product compares the network state documented in NetBox with observations of the operating network, then flags differences for investigation and remediation. It is intended to help network teams identify when the design they rely on no longer matches what is actually running—not to replace ordinary performance monitoring.
What NetBox Assurance does
NetBox serves as the record of intended network state: how a network is designed and documented. Assurance compares that record with operational observations collected from the network. A difference between the two is configuration drift, or operational drift.
That distinction matters. A performance-monitoring tool typically focuses on measures such as availability or utilization. Assurance focuses on whether operational network details still agree with the documented design. A mismatch can prompt a team to investigate whether the network changed unexpectedly, the documentation is out of date, or an observed change was intentional but not yet recorded.
NetBox Labs describes the product as continuously comparing states, identifying meaningful deviations, keeping historical records, and supporting change analysis and proposed remediation for team review. These are vendor-described capabilities, not independently measured outcomes.

How drift moves from observation to review
- Collect observations. Assurance can receive data from NetBox Discovery agents, controller integrations, or custom integrations built with the Diode API.
- Compare with NetBox. Assurance checks the observed operational state against the intended state documented in NetBox.
- Investigate deviations. Teams can examine identified differences and their history to understand what changed and whether it is expected.
- Review remediation. The workflow supports proposed remediation and team review, so a detected difference can be assessed before a change is made.
The basic model is observation, comparison, and review. The data source supplies what is seen in the network; NetBox supplies the documented intent; Assurance presents differences for people to evaluate.
Availability and product status
Current NetBox Labs documentation describes Assurance as an optional component of NetBox Enterprise and an add-on for NetBox Cloud. It is not available for NetBox Community Edition. The April 2025 launch announcement described its original packaging and said the NetBox Discovery observability agent was included, but that launch-era description should not be treated as a statement of current packaging or pricing. On September 10, 2026, NetBox Labs announced public preview of Fleet Management and a unified Assurance deviation queue for Cloud customers. The company said the capabilities were included in an existing Assurance subscription. In this preview, discovery agents can be centrally managed and monitored, and deviations can be reviewed in the platform without being written to NetBox until approved. The current documentation labels the Console experience and Fleet Management as public preview; preview availability and status can change. NetBox Labs announced a broader commercial NetBox Discovery offering in November 2025, combining its agent with centralized orchestration and deeper Assurance integration. The announcement gave early 2026 as the expected general-availability timing; that dated expectation alone does not establish current availability. What teams should assess before adopting it
Assurance is most useful when a team can treat NetBox as a meaningful record of intended network state and can supply observations that are relevant to that record. Before evaluating it, establish how it fits the team’s existing network data and change process:
- Source of intended state: Which network details are documented in NetBox, and how reliably are they maintained?
- Observation coverage: Can the team’s Discovery agents, controller integrations, or Diode-based integrations provide the information Assurance needs?
- Detection cadence: Confirm how continuous comparison applies to the selected data sources and operational setup.
- Review and remediation: Decide who investigates deviations, who approves proposed remediation, and how approved changes are recorded.
- Deployment and eligibility: Check the current Cloud or Enterprise requirements, rather than assuming Community Edition support.
- History and controls: Validate what historical information and security controls are available for the team’s audit and operational needs.
These questions help determine fit; they are not a head-to-head ranking against other network assurance products. The relevant differences between tools include their source of intended state, ingestion methods, detection cadence, remediation approvals, deployment options, and audit capabilities.

Why configuration drift matters
When network operations depend on documentation that no longer matches the live environment, teams can make troubleshooting or change decisions using an inaccurate picture. Drift detection is useful because it can make that mismatch visible and give the team a review point. It does not, by itself, establish why a difference occurred or guarantee that a proposed fix is safe; those judgments remain part of the team’s change process.
NetBox Labs positioned Assurance as a response to the gap between what operators think their network looks like and what it actually looks like. Network World’s April 2, 2025 launch coverage also quoted CEO Kristopher Beevers describing the growing complexity and criticality of networks relative to the teams managing them. The product addresses documentation integrity and drift review, while claims about reduced downtime, faster resolution, or improved security should be understood as vendor use-case claims rather than independently established results.

The April 2, 2025 availability announcement made NetBox Assurance a commercial product for NetBox customers. Its central idea is straightforward: compare the intended network recorded in NetBox with operational observations, make deviations visible, and give teams a workflow to analyze and review them. Current eligibility is described in the product documentation; newer preview capabilities add centralized agent management and a unified deviation queue for Cloud customers, subject to the stated preview status.
