NetApp’s hybrid multicloud management platform is now called NetApp Console; the company renamed BlueXP on October 6, 2025. Built on the BlueXP foundation, the Console is NetApp’s web-based control point for managing its storage systems and data services across on-premises environments and Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud. The name and interface changed—BlueXP became Systems, and Connectors became Console agents—but the core strategy remains: give organizations ways to manage and move data across NetApp’s on-premises and cloud offerings.

That is NetApp’s product positioning, not a guarantee that every product, cloud, or workflow is managed identically. The practical choice still depends on workload, storage type, location, cloud service availability, cost, and who operates each layer.

What is NetApp BlueXP, and how does it manage hybrid multicloud storage?

NetApp Console (formerly BlueXP) is a centralized management interface for NetApp storage and data services spanning on-premises systems and public clouds. NetApp describes BlueXP as the center of its hybrid multicloud strategy in its FY2025 filing; after the October 2025 rename, the current product name is NetApp Console. NetApp’s hybrid cloud overview presents the Console as a way to manage its offerings across AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud.

The portfolio includes both NetApp software that customers deploy in the cloud and storage services delivered in partnership with cloud providers. NetApp’s cloud services use ONTAP, the data-management software also used in its on-premises ONTAP systems. This creates a common technology foundation, but does not mean all services have the same controls, features, deployment steps, or support boundaries.

Is BlueXP still called BlueXP?

No. NetApp changed the name to NetApp Console on October 6, 2025. The company describes the Console as built on BlueXP, so BlueXP remains relevant when referring to the product’s history or older instructions. In current product terminology, Canvas is called Systems, and Connectors are called Console agents. See NetApp’s rename announcement for the change and its terminology.

Which NetApp storage options span on-premises and cloud?

These offerings serve different operating models. Provider-native services are managed cloud storage products; Cloud Volumes ONTAP is NetApp software deployed in cloud infrastructure. NetApp also sells and supports on-premises systems that organizations can connect to cloud services.

Option Where it runs What to know
On-premises NetApp systems Customer facilities NetApp’s portfolio includes ONTAP systems as well as AFF, FAS, StorageGRID, and E-Series systems. An IDC brief distributed by NetApp describes Console visibility across these systems and cloud environments; it identifies product scope, not independently measured outcomes. IDC brief hosted by NetApp.
Cloud Volumes ONTAP AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud NetApp software-defined storage deployed in cloud environments. Customers should check the current product documentation for deployment options, licensing, supported configurations, and restrictions.
Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP AWS A first-party cloud storage service delivered through Amazon Web Services and based on NetApp ONTAP.
Azure NetApp Files Microsoft Azure A first-party cloud storage service delivered through Azure and based on NetApp ONTAP.
Google Cloud NetApp Volumes Google Cloud A first-party cloud storage service delivered through Google Cloud and based on NetApp ONTAP. Features, service levels, and regional availability vary; consult current provider documentation.

NetApp’s FY2025 filing names these cloud offerings as part of its hybrid multicloud portfolio. The distinction matters when assigning operational responsibility: a provider-native service and customer-deployed software may differ in provisioning, licensing, support, and which cloud infrastructure components the customer manages.

How can data move between on-premises systems and cloud?

NetApp documents SnapMirror replication between on-premises ONTAP and ONTAP in AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud. The company identifies migration, disaster recovery, and workload balancing as uses for moving or replicating data. Its technical report on hybrid multicloud storage also discusses cloud-native file services as capacity extensions and analytics and DevOps workloads as cloud use cases.

These are documented options, not proof that every source-and-destination pair or migration path is supported. Before planning a move, confirm the precise service combination, replication requirements, network and security design, and any application cutover steps in current product documentation. NetApp’s October 2025 Google Cloud announcement describes hybrid scenarios using SnapMirror, including cloud migration, disaster recovery, and workload balancing; it does not establish universal support across all configurations.

What changed in Google Cloud NetApp Volumes?

NetApp announced new block-storage capabilities and caching and integration enhancements for Google Cloud NetApp Volumes in October 2025. The announcement describes potential hybrid scenarios, but customers should verify current feature status, prerequisites, and availability in their intended regions before relying on a particular capability.

In April 2024, NetApp announced a Flex service level for Google Cloud NetApp Volumes with a stated range of 1 GiB to 100 TiB and performance of up to 1 GiB/s, depending on underlying storage-pool size. Those are specifications in a dated vendor announcement, not an independent benchmark or a guarantee that the same limits apply today. The announcement also described BlueXP classification for data tagging and ONTAP Snapshot and FlexClone for snapshots and cloning in a generative AI reference architecture. See the April 2024 announcement and verify current service documentation before using those details to size a deployment.

How should you assess a hybrid multicloud design?

NetApp’s control plane and product range can be relevant when an organization needs to manage data in more than one location, but a platform-level description cannot answer whether a particular design will meet performance, cost, security, or recovery targets. Evaluate the actual workload and operating model against these factors:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Workload and storage type: Determine whether the application needs file or block storage, and which performance and capacity characteristics it requires.
  • Data placement: Map where data lives now, where it must run, and which copies must remain on-premises or in a cloud.
  • Objective: Separate a one-time migration from ongoing replication for disaster recovery or workload balancing; each has distinct recovery, consistency, and operational needs.
  • Service and region: Check that the specific NetApp or provider-native service and required features are available in each intended cloud region.
  • Economics: Model storage tiers, cloud-provider charges, data movement, replication, and the resources needed to operate the design. The available product descriptions do not establish a universal cost advantage.
  • Security and access: Review identity, access controls, data protection, and how policies apply across the storage system, Console, and cloud-provider environment.
  • Ownership: Decide which team operates storage, cloud infrastructure, networking, and recovery procedures, and confirm support responsibilities for the selected service.

These checks help distinguish a shared management interface from a genuinely validated end-to-end architecture. NetApp’s materials describe integration and available workflows; they do not independently prove that the approach will be simpler, faster, more resilient, or less expensive than alternatives for every organization.

What about AWS Outposts?

In December 2024, NetApp announced an integration in which on-premises NetApp enterprise arrays could provide external block data volumes through the AWS Management Console, alongside Cloud Volumes ONTAP and Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP. Treat this as an announced integration rather than assuming every configuration is generally available: verify current support, prerequisites, and availability before designing around it. Details are in NetApp’s AWS Outposts announcement.
