IOM3 identifies its I/O module, not a guarantee that the shelf will work with a particular server or SAS host bus adapter (HBA). The “$199.99” in the supplied title is not a verified current offer: no seller, listing date, condition, shipping cost, or included parts were established.
What is a NetApp DS4243 with IOM3?
The DS4243 is a NetApp disk shelf: an enclosure for drives that connects to a supported storage system. NetApp’s DS4243 and DS4246 Disk Shelf Overview describes up to 24 drive bays, numbered 0 through 23. The shelf has two I/O modules, and IOM3 is the module designation shown on the face of the DS4243’s I/O module.
A shelf listing is not necessarily a complete, ready-to-connect storage system. The description needs to establish which modules, power supplies, drives, rails, and cables are actually included; those details cannot be inferred from the model name.
What should you verify in a used DS4243 listing?
Modules and power supplies
Confirm that the shelf includes its IOM3 modules and ask for clear photos of the module labels and rear of the unit. NetApp’s overview describes configurations with two or four power supplies depending on drive type, so check the actual number and condition rather than assuming every shelf is configured alike.

Drives, rails, and cables
Ask whether drives are included, and if so, what they are and whether the seller has tested them. Verify separately whether rack rails and SAS cables are part of the sale. A photo of a shelf does not establish that accessories shown—or needed for installation—are included.
Condition and delivered cost
Look for evidence of testing and clarify any faults, missing parts, shipping, and tax before comparing offers. Compare the total delivered cost and the included configuration, not just the headline price.

Will a DS4243 work with my SAS HBA?
Not enough information is given to say. Compatibility depends on the host platform and supported configuration, the HBA, and the intended SAS topology. NetApp directs readers to its Hardware Universe to check platform support. Its Knowledge Base guidance on mixing ESH4, AT-FCX, IOM3, and IOM6 modules distinguishes IOM3 support for DS4243 from IOM6 support for DS2246, DS4246, and DS4486.
Before buying, identify your host system and HBA model, then check supported platform and software configurations and the required connection layout. The DS4243 title does not identify a host, adapter, operating system, or topology, so it cannot establish a universal cable recommendation.

Be cautious about mixing IOM3 and IOM6 shelves
NetApp says that mixing DS4243 shelves with IOM3 and shelves with IOM6 in the same stack limits operation to 3Gb/s. Do not assume an IOM6 shelf retains its faster rate in a mixed stack. NetApp also says not to mix IOM3 and IOM6 within the same shelf; check its guidance and your supported configuration before combining hardware.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What does the $199.99 figure mean?
The title supplies the figure, but it does not establish a live listing or current price. No seller, date, market, shipping or tax, shelf condition, testing status, drive inclusion, rails, cables, or other included components were verified. Treat $199.99 as title context only—not as a confirmed offer or a benchmark for the current market.

If you find an actual offer, compare it against other listings by checking included IOM modules and power supplies, testing evidence, drive inclusion and compatibility, accessories, host support and connector match, and total delivered cost. Those details determine whether the offer fits your setup; the shelf’s model number alone does not.
