The headphones behind the “get you high on dopamine” headline were made by Nervana, a Florida startup. Its 2016 device played music while delivering a low-power electrical signal through the ear canal. Nervana said the stimulation targeted the vagus nerve and could promote dopamine release—but contemporary demonstrations and company claims did not establish that it reliably raised dopamine or produced a safe intoxicating effect.
What were Nervana’s headphones?
Nervana demonstrated headphones paired with a dedicated electronic unit and a music player. The music played normally while the unit delivered electrical stimulation through the ear canal. The product was presented as a way to influence mood or relaxation, not as a conventional pair of audio-only headphones.
In a 2016 description, ScienceAlert said the device would play music while an integrated device sent a low-power signal through the ear canal to stimulate the vagus nerve. Engadget likewise described current passing through the ear canal while music played.
How did Nervana say it worked?
The company’s proposed mechanism was electrical stimulation of the vagus nerve, which Nervana associated with dopamine release and pleasurable or relaxing sensations. In a quotation reported by Nerdist, CEO Ami Brannon described it as a device that sends an electrical signal through the ear canal “to stimulate the release of dopamine in your brain.” That is Brannon’s description of the product, not an independently established medical finding.

The distinction matters: a company’s proposed mechanism is not proof that a consumer device produces a measurable or dependable brain-chemistry effect. The 2016 coverage documented the product concept and demonstrations, but did not establish clinical efficacy.
Did the headphones really get users high?
“High” is a sensational shorthand, not a demonstrated clinical outcome. Engadget reporter Daniel Cooper described a hands-on demonstration using a music player, dedicated unit, and special headphones. ScienceAlert relayed journalist Amanda Gutterman’s account of tingling during a demonstration followed by a pleasurable feeling. Those reports describe individual experiences; they are not controlled evidence that Nervana reliably increased dopamine or caused intoxication.

The reporting available from 2016 does not establish an independent peer-reviewed clinical trial showing that the headphones reliably raise dopamine or produce a safe intoxicating effect. A tingling sensation or a pleasant response during a demonstration cannot by itself verify the claimed mechanism.
What safety advice was reported?
ScienceAlert quoted Nervana CEO Ami Brannon advising users not to drive while using the device and to stay off the road for at least 30 minutes afterward. That was a company warning reported at the time; the report does not establish a validated impairment threshold or show that 30 minutes is a clinically tested recovery period. Treat the advice as a caution, not a measured guarantee of when driving is safe.

Can you still buy Nervana headphones?
The cited coverage is from January and February 2016. It does not verify Nervana’s current company status, whether the product remains available, a current price, or any current seller. There is not enough verified information here to say that Nervana headphones can still be purchased.
Do not assume ordinary earbuds provide the same kind of stimulation. Nervana’s reported design used a dedicated electronic unit and special headphones to deliver electrical stimulation through the ear canal; audio playback alone is not equivalent.

How Nervana differs from other stimulation headsets
Nervana should not be confused with Halo Sport. TechCrunch covered Halo Sport in 2016 as a separate motor-cortex neurostimulation headset aimed at athletic skill learning, rather than Nervana’s ear-canal stimulation product. The devices had different stated targets and intended uses; neither description makes them interchangeable.
