Windows 11 24H2 and later includes an optional built-in sudo; if you need a different workflow, the main alternatives are gsudo, PowerShell’s Start-Process -Verb RunAs, runas.exe, and NirCmd’s elevate. They are not five interchangeable versions of Linux sudo: some request administrator elevation, while runas.exe is chiefly for starting a program as another user. This guide covers Windows desktop administration, not commands inside a Linux environment such as WSL.

The right choice depends on what you mean by “run as admin”: elevating a command in your current account, opening a separate administrator process, or using another account’s credentials are different jobs. The options also differ in whether they use the current console, open a new window, require a third-party utility, or offer optional credential caching. The version and feature details below were checked against vendor documentation on October 31, 2026.

At a glance

Name Best for Key spec Platforms Checked
Built-in Sudo for Windows Elevating commands without installing a third-party utility Three modes; default opens an elevated command in a new window Windows 11 version 24H2 or later Oct. 31, 2026
gsudo Same-console output and additional command-elevation features Supports commands, scripts, shells, and optional credential caching Windows 7 SP1 or later; some features require Windows 10 or 11 Oct. 31, 2026
PowerShell Start-Process -Verb RunAs Launching an administrator process from PowerShell Starts another process rather than elevating the current shell PowerShell on Windows Oct. 31, 2026
runas.exe Starting a program with another user’s credentials Accepts a specified account and prompts for its password Windows Oct. 31, 2026
NirCmd elevate Launching a program with administrator rights using a small third-party utility Vendor lists v2.87, dated April 23, 2024; Windows 11 support is not explicitly listed Vendor system requirements list Windows versions through Windows 10 Oct. 31, 2026

There is no single “best” replacement for every Linux sudo use. Start by checking the Windows version and identifying whether you need administrator rights for the current user or a different account identity. Then decide whether a separate process or window is acceptable. Those questions narrow the list more reliably than looking for an exact syntax match.

What should I use instead of Linux sudo on Windows?

For a supported Windows 11 installation, start with Microsoft’s built-in sudo if its default new-window behavior suits the task. Choose gsudo when you specifically need a documented same-console workflow or its additional features; use PowerShell’s Start-Process to launch an administrator process, and runas.exe when the requirement is to run under another account.

NirCmd is another launcher option, but the vendor does not explicitly confirm Windows 11 compatibility. These recommendations follow the documented feature differences; they are not performance rankings or claims that one tool is universally better.

A practical first-pass decision is:

  • Eligible Windows 11, ordinary elevation: try the built-in option and retain its default mode unless you have a reason to change it.
  • Need output in the existing console: consider gsudo, while reviewing its cache and security options separately.
  • Already writing a PowerShell script that should open an admin app: use Start-Process -Verb RunAs.
  • Need to run as a named alternate account: use runas.exe if that account is authorized and appropriate.
  • Want a compact launcher: NirCmd documents elevate, but verify the product’s current platform information and test the intended Windows 11 environment because explicit support is not listed.

These tools address related administration tasks, but they do not all change the same thing. A new administrator process is not the same as turning the current shell into an elevated shell, and an alternate account is not automatically equivalent to UAC-approved elevation.

How is Windows sudo different from Linux sudo?

Windows sudo requests elevation through Windows’ administrator and User Account Control (UAC) model; it is not a drop-in implementation of Linux sudo policy. Microsoft describes its built-in command as available in Windows 11 version 24H2 or higher, and its documented FAQ distinguishes Windows sudo from runas because the two handle identity and elevation differently. Microsoft’s Sudo for Windows documentation states: “The Sudo for Windows command is available in Windows 11, version 24H2 or higher.”

The distinction matters when choosing a command. Administrator elevation lets an operation run with elevated rights in the current user’s context; selecting another user’s credentials is a different task. Windows sudo currently does not let you choose a different target user, while runas.exe is designed around specifying one. Neither should be described as a universal substitute for the other.

This article concerns Windows desktop administration. If you open a Linux distribution in WSL, that Linux environment has its own commands and privilege model; the Windows command examples here are not instructions for changing Linux sudo policy.

Windows’ elevation flow is also tied to authorization. UAC prompts for consent when an action requires administrator rights. A command prefix or launcher can request that elevation, but that does not mean it bypasses the prompt or grants rights the account is not allowed to use. Do not disable UAC merely to avoid consent prompts.

How do I enable and use built-in Sudo for Windows?

Built-in sudo is optional. On Windows 11 version 24H2 or later, enable it in Settings, then invoke it from an unelevated command prompt or shell. Microsoft’s documented example is sudo netstat -ab.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Check the Windows version. Confirm that the PC is running Windows 11 version 24H2 or later. Microsoft’s published minimum for this feature is 24H2; a different Windows edition or an older release is not covered by that stated minimum.
  2. Enable the feature. Open Settings > System > Advanced > Enable sudo and turn it on. This setting enables the Windows feature; it is not an instruction to download an installation tool or create installation media.
  3. Run the command that needs elevation. From a non-elevated console, prefix the command with sudo. For example, enter sudo netstat -ab, as shown in Microsoft’s documentation.
  4. Review the elevation prompt. UAC asks for consent when an action requires administrator rights. Approve only a request you intended to make.

Microsoft documents three configuration modes. The default, forceNewWindow, starts the elevated command in a new window. disableInput retains the current window but closes the input handle; normal allows input in the current console. Microsoft recommends keeping the default unless you understand the risks associated with the other modes. See Microsoft’s mode descriptions and configuration guidance.

The choice is more than a matter of window preference: the modes differ in how elevated and unelevated processes interact with the console. Microsoft warns that connections between them in disableInput and normal modes can create risks. Use a current-console mode only when its behavior is needed and you understand the implications.

For many readers, the default is the simplest starting point precisely because it separates the elevated command into a new window. If you change modes to keep interaction in the original console, first check that the command genuinely needs that arrangement. Do not select a less conservative mode just because it resembles the behavior of a command on another operating system.

If the setting is unavailable, begin by confirming the Windows version rather than assuming that a USB drive, third-party download, or different command syntax will enable the feature. The published minimum is Windows 11 24H2. If the PC is eligible but the feature is still not available, consult current Microsoft support guidance for that installation rather than improvising a workaround.

When is gsudo a better fit?

gsudo is worth considering when you need elevated commands to display output in the current console, want to elevate a shell or script, or need a tool that also supports older Windows versions. Its maintainer documents support from Windows 7 SP1 onward, although some features are limited to Windows 10 or 11.

Compared with built-in Windows sudo, gsudo’s documented appeal is workflow flexibility: it can work across several shells, start an elevated shell, and show elevated command output in the current console. That may be useful when a command’s output needs to remain alongside the unelevated session. It is still a separate third-party utility to install and maintain, so it is not the no-additional-tool choice.

Install and run a command

The developer documents this installation command:

winget install gerardog.gsudo

After installation, prefix a command with gsudo:

gsudo <command>

For a PowerShell command or script block, the documented form is:

gsudo { ScriptBlock }

gsudo supports several shells and can start an elevated shell. Its current-console behavior can be useful when seeing command output alongside the original session matters, but it is still an elevation tool: a UAC authorization prompt is not something to bypass. Use the explicit gsudo command to make clear which utility you intend to run.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to know about its optional cache

gsudo offers an optional credentials cache that can reduce repeated UAC prompts. That convenience has a security trade-off: the maintainer warns that a malicious process influencing the permitted parent process may create additional risk. Do not enable caching simply to make prompts disappear; consider whether the reduced prompting is appropriate for the machine and workflow. The gsudo project documentation describes its installation, features, and cache considerations.

Some gsudo installers create a sudo alias. On a system where Microsoft’s built-in sudo is also available, use the explicit gsudo command when you intend to invoke the third-party tool so the command’s meaning is clear. This matters most when troubleshooting: if two tools can answer to the same short command, being explicit helps identify which implementation is being called.

Use the maintainer’s platform notes when checking whether a particular gsudo feature is available on an older Windows release. The broad support statement begins at Windows 7 SP1, but the maintainer also notes that some features are limited to Windows 10 or 11. Do not infer that every feature behaves identically on every supported version.

How do I launch an administrator process from PowerShell?

Use PowerShell’s Start-Process with the -Verb RunAs parameter when a script or interactive shell needs to launch another process with administrator rights. This opens a separate process; it does not convert the already-running PowerShell session into an elevated one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft’s example for opening an administrator PowerShell process is:

Start-Process -FilePath "powershell" -Verb RunAs

This is a built-in PowerShell facility, so it can be a practical choice when the task is simply to launch a new administrator process rather than install a command-elevation utility. Expect the elevated application or shell to run separately from the original one. If the goal is to continue typing into the exact same shell session with elevated rights, this example does not do that.

Think of Start-Process as a process launcher in this use: it asks Windows to start the named program with the RunAs verb. It does not add a sudo-like prefix to each command in the current shell. That makes it a natural fit for automation that should open a separate administrator application or shell, but a poor match when the desired result is uninterrupted interaction in the existing console.

Do not confuse -Verb RunAs with Start-Process’s separate -Credential parameter set. The former requests elevation; the latter concerns credentials. They solve distinct problems, and the presence of both parameters in the same cmdlet does not make them interchangeable. Microsoft documents the parameters and examples in its Start-Process reference.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When should I use Windows runas.exe?

Use runas.exe when you need to start a program as a specified user, rather than merely request administrator elevation for your current account. Microsoft documents the /user:<UserAccountName> argument and a prompt for the alternate account’s password.

For example, replace the account name with one you are authorized to use:

runas /user:DOMAINAdminUser "cmd.exe"

The important distinction is identity. Running a program under another account does not automatically mean it has the same effective elevation as a UAC-approved administrator process. Choose runas for the account context you need, and do not treat its syntax as interchangeable with sudo. Microsoft explains this distinction in its Sudo for Windows FAQ and its runas command reference.

The example uses a placeholder account name; substitute only an account that exists in the relevant environment and that you are permitted to use. The command prompts for that account’s password. It is not a recommendation to put a password directly into the command line, and the syntax shown does not establish that the alternate account will receive every administrative capability you might expect.

Microsoft also notes that Windows sudo can connect to the current console in certain modes, while runas cannot. That is another reason not to choose based on the words “run as” alone: one question is which account identity a program uses, and another is how its input and output connect to your console.

Is NirCmd elevate a suitable Windows 11 alternative?

NirCmd’s elevate command is a focused way to launch a program with administrator rights. NirSoft’s command reference gives nircmd.exe elevate notepad.exe as an example. It is a launcher, not evidence of feature parity with Windows sudo or gsudo.

There is an important compatibility qualification: NirSoft’s product page identifies NirCmd version 2.87, dated April 23, 2024, but its system-requirements text lists Windows versions only through Windows 10. That does not prove it is incompatible with Windows 11; it means the vendor does not explicitly list Windows 11 support in the cited information. If considering it on Windows 11, check the vendor’s current information and verify it in the intended environment before relying on it. NirSoft’s NirCmd page includes the utility information and command reference.

That caveat should affect how you evaluate it: NirCmd is a candidate for readers who specifically want its documented launcher command, not the default recommendation for a Windows 11 machine where platform confirmation matters. The vendor’s example demonstrates how to invoke elevate; it does not document all the console behavior, shell features, or cache choices described for other tools.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How should I choose between the five options?

Match the tool to the task and the console behavior you need. The decisive questions are whether your Windows version supports built-in sudo, whether you need administrator elevation or another user’s identity, and whether a new process or same-console workflow is acceptable.

  • Choose built-in sudo on Windows 11 24H2 or later when the default elevated new window works and you do not want a third-party utility.
  • Choose gsudo when its documented same-console behavior, broader shell support, or other features matter. Weigh the optional cache’s security trade-off separately.
  • Choose Start-Process -Verb RunAs when PowerShell needs to launch a separate administrator process.
  • Choose runas.exe when the requirement is to start a program under another authorized account’s credentials.
  • Consider NirCmd elevate for a focused launcher only after accounting for the lack of explicit Windows 11 support in the vendor’s listed requirements.

All five approaches are subject to authorization. UAC consent is part of Windows’ elevation model; none should be presented as a way to bypass it. Do not disable UAC just to suppress prompts. For built-in sudo, leave the conservative default mode in place unless you have a specific reason to change it and understand the console-connection risks.

For a more detailed comparison, consider the trade-offs together rather than in isolation:

  • Windows version: Microsoft’s built-in sudo has a stated minimum of Windows 11 24H2. gsudo’s maintainer states support from Windows 7 SP1, with feature limitations on some releases. NirSoft lists platforms only through Windows 10. The supplied platform descriptions for Start-Process and runas.exe do not provide a comparable minimum-version figure here.
  • Identity: Built-in sudo requests elevation without choosing a different target user. runas.exe is the option centered on specifying another account. Do not assume that changing identity and elevating the current account have identical results.
  • Console and process: Built-in sudo defaults to a new window. Its alternate modes change console input behavior and have documented risks. gsudo can show output in the current console. Start-Process -Verb RunAs creates another process. Microsoft says runas cannot connect to the current console in the way certain Windows sudo modes can.
  • Installation: Built-in sudo is an optional Windows feature on eligible systems. gsudo and NirCmd are third-party utilities. Start-Process is a PowerShell facility, and runas.exe is a Windows command. The relevant documentation here does not establish a comparable price for the options, so choose based on fit and requirements rather than an assumed cost ranking.
  • Security behavior: Microsoft cautions about current-console connections in two non-default modes; gsudo’s optional cache reduces repeated prompts but carries a maintainer-described risk. These are different trade-offs, not evidence that any tool bypasses authorization.

The recommendations above are based on documented feature descriptions, not comparative speed tests or measured security rankings. No sourced adoption, performance, or security-effectiveness statistic establishes a winner.

Do you need a USB drive to use Windows sudo?

No. Microsoft’s guidance for making Windows 11 installation media says to use a blank USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of capacity, and warns that existing contents on that drive will be deleted. That requirement applies to creating installation media, not enabling built-in sudo on an existing eligible Windows installation.

A USB drive may be relevant if you are separately reinstalling Windows or performing a clean install, but Microsoft also documents installation paths that do not require USB media. Do not buy or prepare installation media just to turn on sudo: on an eligible PC, the feature is enabled through Settings. Check Microsoft’s current installation-media instructions if you are undertaking a reinstall, since the media requirement belongs to that separate task.

How we picked

The five options were selected because their documented features address related Windows administration needs: command elevation, launching a separate administrator process, or starting a program under another user’s credentials. The comparison prioritizes Windows-version support, identity versus elevation, same-console versus separate-window behavior, third-party installation, and documented security trade-offs. It does not rank speed, adoption, or security effectiveness; no comparable performance figures are established for these tools.

Platform statements are attributed to the vendors: Microsoft documents the Windows 11 24H2 minimum for built-in sudo and the three configuration modes; the gsudo maintainer documents installation, supported Windows versions, and cache cautions; Microsoft documents the PowerShell and runas examples; and NirSoft documents the elevate command and its listed version and platform requirements. NirCmd’s lack of an explicit Windows 11 listing is treated as uncertainty, not proof of incompatibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Windows sudo the same executable as sudo inside WSL?

No. This guide covers the optional Windows desktop feature and Windows administration commands; it does not configure or replace sudo inside a Linux distribution. Treat the Windows and Linux environments as separate command contexts.

Can Windows sudo run a command as a different user?

Microsoft’s documented Windows sudo currently elevates without selecting a different target user. If another account’s identity is the requirement, consider whether Windows’ runas command fits that task.

Does the Windows sudo feature require an installation USB?

No USB is required to enable sudo on an eligible existing Windows installation. Microsoft’s guidance calling for a blank USB flash drive with at least 8 GB applies to creating Windows installation media, not to enabling this feature.

Which Windows sudo mode should I use?

Microsoft’s default is forceNewWindow, which starts the elevated command in a new window. The disableInput and normal modes use the current window with different input behavior; Microsoft warns about risks from connections between elevated and unelevated processes in those modes. Keep the default unless you understand why another mode is needed.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Start-Process -Verb RunAs elevate the PowerShell window I already have open?

No. Microsoft’s example launches another PowerShell process with administrator rights. It does not convert the already-running PowerShell session into an elevated one.

Is runas.exe a drop-in replacement for sudo?

No. runas.exe is chiefly for starting a program as a specified user and prompts for that account’s password. Selecting another account is not automatically the same as elevating the current account through UAC.

Does gsudo avoid UAC authorization prompts?

Do not treat it as a way to bypass authorization. Its optional cache can reduce repeated prompts, but the maintainer warns that the cache has an additional risk if a malicious process influences the permitted parent process. Review that trade-off before enabling it.

Is NirCmd confirmed to work on Windows 11?

NirSoft’s listed system requirements go through Windows 10, so the vendor information cited here does not explicitly confirm Windows 11 support. That absence is not proof of incompatibility; check current vendor information and verify it in your own environment before relying on it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

On Windows 11 24H2 or later, start with the built-in sudo and its conservative new-window default. Use gsudo when a documented same-console workflow or its other features matter; use Start-Process -Verb RunAs to launch a separate administrator process, and runas.exe when you need another account’s identity. Treat NirCmd as an optional launcher whose Windows 11 compatibility is not explicitly listed by its vendor. None of these tools should be used to bypass authorization or justify disabling UAC.
