Need a Microsoft Lens replacement? Microsoft removed Lens from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store on February 9, 2026, and stopped allowing new scans on March 9, 2026. OneDrive is Microsoft’s official successor, but it saves scans to OneDrive rather than directly to your phone. Adobe Scan, Google Drive, Genius Scan, and SwiftScan cover different workflows.

The right replacement depends less on camera quality than on what happens after capture. A useful scanner must handle the complete workflow: detect page edges, correct perspective, recognize text, assemble multipage PDFs, store files safely, and export them where you actually work.

Key takeaways

  • OneDrive is Microsoft’s official Lens replacement, but Microsoft says OneDrive scans cannot be saved locally on the device.
  • Adobe Scan is the strongest OCR-focused choice for searchable PDFs, forms, receipts, business cards, and Acrobat workflows, although advanced PDF features require a subscription.
  • Google Drive is the most convenient option for Google users because scans go into an existing Drive-based organization and sharing workflow.
  • Genius Scan is the best independent scanner candidate for readers who want a scanner-first app rather than a Microsoft, Google, or Adobe storage ecosystem.
  • SwiftScan is aimed at frequent scanners who may value a more feature-rich dedicated app enough to accept premium pricing.

Quick verdict

If you need… Choose… Why
The official Microsoft path OneDrive Scanning is built into the OneDrive mobile app and saves directly to OneDrive.
Searchable PDFs and OCR Adobe Scan Adobe documents automatic boundary detection, perspective correction, glare and shadow reduction, and OCR-generated searchable PDFs.
Direct Google organization and sharing Google Drive The scanner is part of the Drive mobile experience.
An independent scanner workflow Genius Scan It is designed as a dedicated scanning app rather than primarily as a cloud-storage client.
A premium dedicated scanner SwiftScan It targets frequent users who want OCR, document organization, and additional scanning features.

What happened to Microsoft Lens?

Microsoft Lens is no longer a viable long-term scanner. Microsoft’s retirement process began on January 9, 2026; Microsoft removed the app from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store on February 9, 2026; and Microsoft stopped allowing new scans on March 9, 2026. The dates describe different stages of retirement, so saying only that Lens “ended” on February 9 is incomplete.

Existing Lens installations may still show previously scanned files, but Microsoft says continued access is unsupported. Access requires Lens to remain installed and the user to remain signed in to the last active account. Before deleting Lens, open the app, verify that important scans are visible, and export or move those files to a destination you have checked independently. See Microsoft’s Lens retirement documentation for the official timeline and conditions.

New scans stopped March 9, 2026 Existing installations could no longer create new scans.
Old-scan access After retirement Previously scanned files may remain accessible only under Microsoft’s stated conditions, and that access is unsupported.

Is OneDrive really a replacement for Microsoft Lens?

OneDrive is Microsoft’s official replacement for Lens, and OneDrive is the closest choice for people whose documents already belong in Microsoft 365. OneDrive replaces basic document capture, automatic scanning inside a Microsoft app, direct saving to a chosen OneDrive folder, and Microsoft-account integration.

OneDrive is not a feature-for-feature replacement for every Lens workflow. Microsoft explicitly says that OneDrive scans cannot be saved locally on the device. That makes OneDrive a poor fit for someone who wants local PDFs, no cloud account, cross-cloud export, or a scanner app separate from file management. The limitation is documented in Microsoft’s Lens retirement and OneDrive replacement guidance.

How do you scan with OneDrive?

To scan with OneDrive, open OneDrive on an iPhone, iPad, or Android phone or tablet, sign in with the intended Microsoft account, tap +, choose Scan photo, capture the document, and save the result to the desired OneDrive folder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Install or open the OneDrive mobile app.
  2. Sign in with the Microsoft account that should own the file.
  3. Tap +.
  4. Select Scan photo.
  5. Capture the document.
  6. Save the scan to a OneDrive location.

Choose OneDrive when your desired destination is already OneDrive, Word, Excel, Teams, or SharePoint. Do not choose OneDrive as the default replacement if local-only saving or cloud independence is more important than Microsoft integration. OneDrive offers a free tier, while additional storage is generally associated with paid OneDrive or Microsoft 365 plans; check the current OneDrive storage and Microsoft 365 page for live regional plans.

Which Microsoft Lens replacement is best for your workflow?

The best Microsoft Lens replacement depends on the complete document workflow, not just whether an app can photograph a page. Edge detection and perspective correction affect scan appearance; OCR affects search and text extraction; multipage capture affects contracts and packets; and storage and export determine whether the scan remains useful after capture.

App Best fit Storage direction OCR and PDF position Local export Paid boundary Main weakness
OneDrive Microsoft 365 users OneDrive-first Built-in mobile scanning; verify current OCR behavior for your platform and account No, according to Microsoft Storage and Microsoft 365 plans may apply Cloud dependence and no direct local save
Adobe Scan OCR and searchable PDFs Adobe plus connected cloud services Searchable PDFs through OCR; JPEG output also supported Local/JPEG workflows are documented; verify the exact PDF export path by platform Advanced PDF tools and higher limits require a subscription Important PDF-management features sit behind a subscription
Google Drive Google Workspace and Drive users Google Drive-first Mobile document scanning and PDF workflow; verify current OCR behavior Verify the current export path on your device Extra cloud storage may require Google One or Workspace Less scanner-focused than a dedicated app
Genius Scan Independent scanning Local/export plus optional services; edition-dependent Dedicated multipage PDF workflow; verify the current OCR tier Verify the free-versus-paid export distinction Some advanced features may be premium Less Microsoft, Google, or Acrobat integration
SwiftScan Frequent or professional scanning App plus cloud integrations; edition-dependent Dedicated scanning with OCR and multipage PDFs; verify the current tier Verify the current platform and plan limits Subscription or lifetime options may vary Cost and plan complexity

Features and plan limits can differ between iOS and Android, free and premium editions, personal and business accounts, countries, and app versions. Treat the table as a workflow guide rather than a promise that every feature is included on every device.

Is Adobe Scan the best replacement for searchable PDFs?

Adobe Scan is the strongest general-purpose choice when OCR and polished searchable PDFs matter more than local-only storage. Adobe says Adobe Scan can capture documents, forms, business cards, and whiteboards; detect boundaries automatically; correct perspective; reduce glare and shadows; and create searchable PDFs through OCR.

Brother DS-640 Compact Mobile Document Scanner, (Model: DS640)

  • OPTIMIZE IMAGES AND TEXT – Automatic color detection/adjustment, image rotation (PC only), bleed through prevention/background removal, text enhancement, color drop to enhance scans. Software suite includes document management and OCR software. (4)

Adobe Scan can also save scans as JPEGs and send scans to local storage or connected cloud services such as Dropbox and Google Drive, according to Adobe’s Adobe Scan feature documentation. Adobe Scan is particularly suitable for receipts, forms, business cards, notes, and whiteboards that need to become searchable documents.

What is free in Adobe Scan?

Adobe describes Adobe Scan as free to download and use for basic scanning. Adobe’s subscription documentation lists combining files, exporting PDFs to other formats, password protection, scan editing, compression, increased OCR limits, high-speed scanning, text editing, and erasing marks or text among premium capabilities.

Adobe says premium OCR limits can increase to 100 pages and Adobe cloud storage can increase from 5 GB to 20 GB, subject to the applicable subscription. The figures belong to Adobe’s subscription documentation and should not be treated as universal limits for every plan or platform. Read the Adobe Scan subscription documentation before relying on a particular limit.

Adobe Scan is therefore not simply an “entirely free PDF editor.” Basic capture can be free, while advanced export, combining, protection, compression, and editing may require Adobe Scan Premium or an Acrobat subscription. Current U.S. pricing was not established by the supplied product pages, so check the live Adobe Acrobat pricing page or the relevant app-store checkout before subscribing.

Is Google Drive a good Lens replacement?

Google Drive is a good Microsoft Lens replacement when the reader’s first question is, “How do I get this scan into Google Drive?” Google Drive provides mobile document scanning, direct Drive organization, PDF-oriented workflows, and sharing through Google Drive permissions.

Google Drive is primarily a storage and collaboration app with a scanner feature, not a scanner-first application. Drive is convenient for students, households, and teams already using Google Docs or Google Workspace, but Drive may be less suitable for someone who wants fine-grained scan editing, local-first storage, dedicated document organization, or advanced PDF manipulation.

The scanner is part of the Google Drive mobile experience rather than a separate paid scanner product. Storage beyond the included Google account allowance may require Google One or a Workspace plan. Check the Google Drive product page and the current Google Drive Android listing; iPhone feature availability and exact parity should be checked in the current App Store listing before publication or installation.

  • Choose in what size of PDF you want to keep your notes.

Is Genius Scan the best independent Microsoft Lens alternative?

Genius Scan is the most natural candidate for readers who want a dedicated scanner rather than a scanner hidden inside a large productivity ecosystem. Genius Scan is suited to straightforward document capture, multipage PDF creation, batch workflows, and export, while its free and paid editions should be checked before purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Genius Scan may appeal to readers who want to minimize dependence on Microsoft, Google, or Adobe. The exact boundaries for OCR, cloud backup or synchronization, batch tools, naming, security controls, and export can vary by edition and platform, so do not assume that a feature shown on a product page is included in the free app.

Check the current Genius Scan product page, Genius Scan iOS listing, and Genius Scan Android listing for the current U.S. feature set and price. The supplied research did not establish a reliable current U.S. price, so an old comparison article should not be used as a price source.

Is SwiftScan worth paying for?

SwiftScan is worth considering when you scan frequently and want a polished dedicated scanner with OCR, document organization, multipage PDFs, cloud destinations, editing, and sharing features. SwiftScan is less compelling for occasional users who need only an occasional single-page PDF and do not want a subscription.

SwiftScan’s main trade-off is plan complexity. The free version may limit watermarks, output options, scan counts, or advanced features depending on the current edition, and features shown in vendor material may not be included in the free plan. iOS and Android editions may also differ.

Review the current SwiftScan product page, SwiftScan iOS listing, and SwiftScan Android listing before subscribing. The supplied research did not establish current U.S. subscription or lifetime pricing, so verify the live store configuration rather than relying on a dated price.

How should you judge a Lens replacement?

Judge a scanner app by the destination and editing steps after capture as well as by the photograph itself. The following checklist exposes the differences that ordinary “best scanner app” lists often miss.

Rank #4
Pocket Scanner - PDF Document Scanner App
  • Auto Capture - The scanner app automatically detects documents or file borders and helps you precise extract scanned documents. Use your phone camera to scan pdf docs, create pdf scans of files, receipts, notes etc.
  • Editor - Once a document is scanned you can then crop it or edit it to just extract the area you desire.
  • Enhance - Pocket Scanner also had advanced enhancement features that lets you enhance the captured scanned document and apply several scan filters to make it crisp and clear. Choose from one of the pre-programmed document scanning filters or use our enhancement editing tools and do it yourself.
  • OCR & Text Recognition - The tiny scanners built-in OCR engine scans the document and extracts texts from images and PDF documents. Using this, you can convert images or PDF Documents from your scan into editable text.
  • Scan & Share PDF Files - Pocket Scanner PDF Document Scanner app comes built with advanced capabilities that converts your scanned documents into a PDF file or PDF documents. It's a PDF Creator & a scaner in your phone.
  • Edge detection and perspective correction: Pages should look like scans rather than skewed camera photos.
  • OCR: Searchable text and text extraction are different from a fully editable Word document.
  • Multipage capture: Contracts, school packets, manuals, and receipts often need one assembled PDF.
  • Output formats: PDF suits multipage documents and archiving; JPEG suits single-page images and visual notes.
  • Local export: Local files matter for privacy, offline work, and avoiding cloud lock-in.
  • Cloud destinations: Check whether the app supports OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox, Adobe cloud, or direct sharing.
  • Editing: Cropping, rotation, markup, signatures, redaction, compression, and text editing may be separate features.
  • Account requirements: An account may be necessary for cloud storage, synchronization, OCR, or premium tools.
  • Pricing: A free scanner may still charge for PDF combining, export, password protection, OCR limits, or editing.
  • Privacy: Determine whether scans are processed locally, uploaded automatically, or stored in a vendor cloud.
  • Platform coverage: Check iPhone, iPad, Android phone, and Android tablet behavior separately.

How do PDF and JPEG outputs differ?

PDF is usually the better choice for multipage documents, searchable text, forms, and archiving. JPEG is usually better for a single-page image, a photo, a visual note, or a workflow that does not need document structure.

OCR does not automatically make a PDF editable like a Word document. OCR can add a searchable text layer or permit text extraction, while exporting PDF content to Word or another editable format may be a paid feature. Adobe explicitly separates basic PDF scanning from premium export-to-other-format features.

How do you preserve old Microsoft Lens scans?

Preserve old Lens scans before uninstalling the app or changing accounts. Microsoft’s stated conditions mean that an installed app and the last active account may be necessary even to view old scans, and Microsoft does not support continued access as a permanent archive.

  1. Open Microsoft Lens while the app is still installed.
  2. Confirm that important old scans are visible.
  3. Confirm that Lens is signed in to the last active account.
  4. Export or move important files to OneDrive, local storage, or another destination appropriate to the document.
  5. Open the exported files from the new destination and verify that the PDFs or images are complete.
  6. Keep a second copy of irreplaceable tax, medical, identity, or legal documents.

Leaving Lens installed does not guarantee continued support. Microsoft describes access to previous scans as conditional and unsupported, so verified export is safer than relying on the old app indefinitely. The official Microsoft retirement notice remains the authoritative source for the retirement conditions.

What about built-in phone scanning tools?

Some readers do not need a replacement app at all. Apple Notes includes document scanning, Android manufacturers may provide document modes in the camera or gallery app, Google Drive includes scanning, and Files by Google offers scanning where available.

Built-in tools can be preferable for occasional scans because they may avoid another account or subscription. Availability, OCR, multipage behavior, export controls, and exact labels vary by phone model, operating-system version, region, and app version. Test one representative document and one multipage document before making a built-in tool your permanent workflow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Privacy and platform checks before scanning sensitive documents

Do not choose an app solely because its marketing says “secure,” “cloud,” or “encrypted.” Those descriptions do not answer whether OCR happens on the device, whether scans upload automatically, whether cloud backup can be disabled, or whether a local export remains available.

Before scanning passports, medical records, tax forms, contracts, or identity documents, check whether the app requires an account, where scans are stored, whether automatic upload is enabled, whether OCR uses a cloud service, whether cloud backup can be disabled, and how files can be deleted. The supplied product information does not establish identical privacy behavior for all five apps, so consult each vendor’s current privacy and app documentation.

Also verify the exact feature set for iOS versus Android, phone versus tablet, free versus premium edition, personal versus business account, U.S. versus non-U.S. store, and current app version. A feature available in one edition is not proof that the same feature is available on every platform.

Bottom line

OneDrive is the right Microsoft Lens replacement for Microsoft 365 users who want scans saved directly into OneDrive and do not need local device storage. Adobe Scan is the stronger choice for OCR and searchable PDFs, Google Drive is best for Drive-centered collaboration, Genius Scan is the most promising independent scanner-first option, and SwiftScan is aimed at frequent users willing to pay for more features.

Whichever app you choose, test the complete workflow: capture a page, scan several pages, search the resulting PDF, export it, open the exported copy, and confirm where the file is stored. That test reveals more than a scan-quality ranking because the real replacement for Lens must replace capture, OCR, PDF assembly, storage, editing, and sharing together.
