Stone provided durable cutting edges for butchering, hide processing, and woodworking; wood could be shaped into spears, lances, and other implements. Archaeological traces show how the materials were made and used, but they do not establish that one was universally more effective.
How wooden and stone tools differed
| Feature | Wooden tools | Stone tools |
|---|---|---|
| Material and preservation | Wood decays readily, so surviving examples are uncommon and the archaeological record underrepresents its use. | Stone survives much more readily, leaving a more visible record of tool use. |
| Manufacture | Tools could be selected and shaped with stone tools; at Poggetti Vecchi, researchers also report evidence of fire-assisted working. | Stone could be flaked to create edges and used to cut, scrape, or shape other materials, including wood. |
| Inferred tasks | Examples include spears, a lance, and double-pointed sticks; some may have served more than one purpose. | At Schöningen, microwear and residues indicate woodworking, hide working, and meat cutting. |
| Evidence used to infer function | Form, manufacturing marks, archaeological context, and associated remains. | Use-wear, residues, tool form, and context; some pieces also suggest possible hafting. |
The comparison is not a performance test: the evidence does not show that stone or wood was categorically better. Rather, it indicates that each material offered different capabilities and that the tools could work together.
What wooden tools were used for
Spears, lances, and shaped sticks
Wooden weapons are known from several Lower and Middle Paleolithic sites, including Clacton-on-Sea, Schöningen, and Lehringen. Schöningen’s broader Spear Horizon assemblage includes wooden spears, a lance, and double-pointed sticks. Their forms support interpretations as weapons or other implements, but shape alone does not prove a specific use. The 2024 study of the Schöningen wooden assemblage stresses that wood is much less likely to survive than stone or bone, so its scarcity in excavations cannot be read as evidence that people rarely used it. Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Schöningen wooden assemblage
Making and using wooden implements
At Poggetti Vecchi, worked wooden implements were recovered alongside stone tools and fossil bones. The authors interpret the implements as potentially multipurpose sticks, rather than assuming they were all weapons. They describe a manufacturing sequence involving wood selection, work with stone tools, and fire; the evidence indicates that fire was used to work the wood. What stone tools did—and how they could support woodworking
Stone tools supplied edges for cutting meat, processing hides, and working wood. At Schöningen, microwear and residue analyses provide evidence for all three activities. Some artifacts show suggestive signs of hafting, consistent with the possibility that stone components were mounted in wooden handles or hafts; this is an interpretation, not proof that every such piece was hafted. Journal of Archaeological Science record: Schöningen stone-tool microwear and residues
This evidence points to an integrated toolkit: stone could help shape wooden implements, while wood could provide a shaft, handle, or implement in its own right. The archaeological record preserves these activities unevenly because stone is more durable than wood.

What the Lehringen spear and elephant remains show
A 2026 study reports a 2.38 m yew thrusting spear from Lehringen, traditionally associated with a straight-tusked elephant at the Eemian site. The study’s new analysis identifies cut marks on the elephant remains, indicating butchery and probably evisceration while the animal was fresh. The spear’s association with the carcass, its condition, and its position make a hunt a persuasive interpretation. However, the authors found no direct evidence of spear impact, and the original excavation documentation was limited; the spear is not proof of the exact killing event. Scientific Reports: Lehringen faunal analysis
How old is the Schöningen spear assemblage?
A 2025 study by Hutson and colleagues uses amino-acid geochronology on fossils from the find-bearing deposits, alongside a regional chronostratigraphic reassessment, to propose an age of about 200,000 years for the Schöningen Spear Horizon. Earlier estimates were about 400,000 years and later about 300,000 years. The revised estimate aligns the assemblage with the timeframe of Neanderthals, but it should be attributed to that study rather than treated as an uncontested date. Age and hominin attribution matter: not every Paleolithic wooden tool can be confidently called Neanderthal. The sites differ in chronology and the strength of their association with particular hominins. At Schöningen, the 2025 proposed date supports placing the assemblage within the Neanderthal timeframe; it does not mean every wooden tool from every named site has the same attribution.
How archaeologists infer what a tool did
- Stone: Microscopic wear and residues can indicate contact with materials such as wood, hide, or meat, while context and possible hafting marks help refine an interpretation.
- Wood: Shape, manufacturing traces, and archaeological context provide clues, but a pointed form alone does not prove that an object was used as a weapon.
- Associated remains: Cut marks and the condition or position of animal remains can support an account of butchery or hunting, without necessarily proving the exact moment or cause of death.
Functions are inferred from converging evidence. The strongest accounts distinguish what traces directly show from what an overall context makes plausible.

Why fewer wooden tools survive
Wood decays much more readily than stone, so only particular conditions preserve wooden artifacts over long periods. The small number of excavated examples therefore reflects preservation as well as ancient behavior. Stone’s greater visibility in the archaeological record should not be mistaken for proof that it was the only—or necessarily the more important—material in everyday tool use.
