NBA 2K27 is the best default choice for a new buyer focused on offline play if you want exhibition games, franchise-style MyNBA, or The W. 2K says those modes are available offline, but other modes and features require an internet connection. If you specifically want offline MyCAREER or MyTEAM, none of these releases is the right answer: those modes depend on online services.
The comparison below is about published offline mode availability and service schedules—not a hands-on ranking of gameplay, franchise depth, or value. The best fit depends on the mode you want and whether you are buying new or already own an older game.

Which NBA 2K is best for offline play?
For a new purchase, NBA 2K27 is the strongest default because it is the current release and its product page explicitly names Play Now, MyNBA, and The W as offline modes. NBA 2K27 was released September 4, 2026. The product page also says other modes and features require an internet connection, so do not assume that everything in the game works offline. 2K’s NBA 2K27 product page
NBA 2K26 may suit you if it is available for your platform at a price you prefer and you want one of its listed offline modes. NBA 2K25 is a different case: its sale and service-retirement dates are near, so it is mainly relevant to current owners or buyers who understand the restrictions.

Is NBA 2K27 playable offline?
Yes, for the modes 2K identifies. Its product page states: “Play Now, MyNBA, and The W are available offline.” It also says all other modes and features require an internet connection. 2K’s service-status table lists 2KU/Learn 2K and MyWNBA as offline as well, but the product page’s narrower wording is the safer guide when planning a purchase. Confirm the intended platform listing because the store page’s platform selector and rendered details may differ.

PC buyers should account for a one-time internet connection during initial installation for Steam authentication, as stated on the product page. Offline mode support does not establish that installation, authentication, platform licensing, or every feature can be handled without internet. Console offline-account and licensing requirements are platform-specific.
Can you play MyCAREER or MyTEAM offline?
No. The cited 2K mode lists do not identify MyCAREER or MyTEAM as offline modes, and NBA 2K27’s product page says modes and features beyond Play Now, MyNBA, and The W require an internet connection. These modes also rely on online services, so they are not suitable choices if you need to play without connectivity.

Which game should you choose for offline MyNBA or MyLeague?
If offline franchise-style play is your priority, compare the exact game and mode labels rather than assuming all annual releases work identically. 2K’s official listings identify MyNBA for 2K27 and MyNBA/MyLeague/MyGM for 2K26. Its 2K25 shutdown notice says owners can continue the listed offline modes after the service retirement, including MyNBA. The NBA 2K26 mode breakdown provides the official mode list for that release.

- Consider NBA 2K26 if its availability and price suit you better and its listed MyNBA/MyLeague/MyGM options match what you want.
- Keep NBA 2K25 in perspective if you own it already; its offline modes remain useful, but online modes are scheduled to be removed and the game is scheduled to leave sale soon.
What happens when NBA 2K servers shut down?
Server retirement affects online services and server-dependent features; it does not automatically remove every offline mode. According to 2K’s current schedule, NBA 2K27 services are planned through December 31, 2028, NBA 2K26 through December 31, 2027, and NBA 2K25 through December 31, 2026. These are scheduled dates and can change.
For NBA 2K25 specifically, 2K says the game will stop being sold October 30, 2026 and be discontinued December 31, 2026. From January 1, 2027, MyCAREER and MyTEAM are scheduled to be unavailable. Existing owners are expected to retain listed offline modes such as Play Now, MyNBA, The W, and MyWNBA. The notice does not make server-dependent features permanent.

What to check before buying an NBA 2K for offline play
- Pick the mode first. If you want MyCAREER or MyTEAM, offline mode lists do not support that use case. For Play Now, MyNBA, or The W, check the specific release’s official listing.
- Match the game to your platform and edition. Listings and licensing arrangements can vary by platform; do not assume every edition or platform has identical offline setup requirements.
- Separate installation from play. NBA 2K27’s PC listing requires an initial internet connection for Steam authentication even though it identifies offline modes.
- Consider the service lifespan only for connected features. Review 2K’s current service-status schedule if you expect to use online modes or server-dependent content.
- Check current availability and price yourself. The official sources establish mode lists and announced dates, not current retailer stock, street prices, or a price-versus-gameplay winner.
