What the PS5 and PS4 comparison is showing
NBA 2K21 was released as distinct current-generation and next-generation editions. 2K described the PS5 version as built from the ground up for next-generation consoles, rather than simply presenting it as the PS4 game running on newer hardware. The PS4 footage in the commonly cited comparison is from a PS4 Pro, so it should not be treated as a comparison with every PS4 model.

The Operation Sports video, NBA 2K21 Graphics Comparison (4K Ultra HD) – PS4 Pro Vs. PS5 W/ HDR And No HDR, places PS4 Pro and PS5 footage alongside each other and includes HDR-on and HDR-off examples. It gives viewers a direct visual reference, but one captured video cannot establish a universal or controlled graphics benchmark.
Where the PS5 edition looks different
Animation and foot planting
Visual Concepts highlighted player movement as a key part of the upgrade. In the PlayStation Blog gameplay deep dive, the developer said: “Our engineers re-wrote our foot planting tech from scratch and it led to one of the most striking visual improvements when you put current gen side-by-side with next gen.” This is the developer’s explanation of its work, not an independently measured result; the comparison footage offers a way to see the animation difference in context.

Player detail and presentation
GameSpot made a separate comparison by recreating a PS5 trailer shot for shot using the PS4 edition. Its editorial description notes more pronounced sweat detail in the PS5 footage, along with generally improved animations and graphics. That observation describes those specific clips; it does not quantify a system-wide difference.
Why HDR and video processing matter
The Operation Sports creator cautioned that the HDR gameplay image appeared over-saturated or overexposed and said color correction was used to make the footage more comparable. That is a caveat about the video’s capture and presentation, not evidence that HDR always makes NBA 2K21 look worse. HDR results depend on the display, settings, and how footage is captured and processed.

For a fair personal comparison, use the same display and viewing mode for both editions where possible, and avoid treating a processed online clip as a substitute for seeing the game on your own setup. The cited sources do not provide controlled resolution, frame-rate, or image-quality measurements, so they cannot support precise claims about those differences.

2K identified the Mamba Forever Edition as the route to access both current- and next-generation editions within the same console family: PlayStation or Xbox. 2K also described same-family MyTEAM cross-progression and a shared VC wallet. Do not assume that buying any PS4 edition includes a PS5 copy; the dual-access benefit was tied to the stated Mamba Forever Edition.
