The National Cybersecurity Alliance (NCA) announced its third annual Data Privacy Week on January 22, 2024, under the theme “Take Control of Your Data.” The planned campaign paired educational materials with webinars and events for consumers and businesses. The announcement is a record of a 2024 campaign, not a guide to the current edition.
What was Data Privacy Week 2024?
Data Privacy Week was an NCA awareness campaign about understanding and managing personal information. The announcement described that information as data generated through websites, apps, and companies, including people’s interests, purchases, behaviors, and health-related information.
The campaign’s message was that people may not be able to control every collection practice, but they can take repeatable steps to manage their data and make more deliberate choices about who receives it. It also addressed businesses, urging responsible data stewardship and education about sensitive information.
When was Data Privacy Week 2024?
NCA announced the campaign on January 22, 2024. Its announcement, published by Dark Reading, gives the campaign dates as January 22–27. A contemporaneous Contrast Security release instead says January 21–27. Because the published accounts differ, the start date should be attributed to its source rather than treated as settled.
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
What was the 2024 theme?
The theme was “Take Control of Your Data.” It framed privacy as an ongoing practice: learn what information is being collected, consider how it is used, and make informed choices where options are available.
What did the campaign offer?
NCA announced publicly available educational materials and events featuring privacy experts, policymakers, and engineers. It said the programming was intended for consumers and businesses. The announcement does not provide a complete event calendar, session titles, or a full speaker roster, so those details cannot be established from it.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
What could individuals and businesses take from the campaign?
For individuals
- Pay attention to the personal information requested by websites and apps, especially when a service asks for sensitive details.
- Review available privacy choices and consider whether the information requested is necessary for the service or feature you want to use.
- Make privacy checks a recurring habit rather than assuming one setting or decision governs every company and service.
These are practical implications of the campaign’s general message, not a complete checklist published in the announcement.
For businesses
- Treat personal information as a stewardship responsibility, not merely a resource to collect.
- Educate staff about sensitive data and how it should be handled.
- Explain data practices clearly enough for people to make informed choices where choices are offered.
NCA Executive Director Lisa Plaggemier said in the January 22, 2024 announcement: “Knowing how to safeguard your personal information has never been more important than it is today.” She also said: “As innovation continues to outpace regulation, individuals and businesses alike need to make concerted efforts to educate themselves and take a proactive role in preserving the privacy of sensitive data.”

- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
How did Data Privacy Week relate to Data Privacy Day?
The NCA announcement says Data Privacy Week builds on Data Privacy Day, which began in the United States and Canada in January 2008 as an extension of Data Protection Day in Europe. The announcement describes Data Protection Day as commemorating the January 28, 1981 signing of Convention 108, which it calls the first legally binding international treaty dealing with privacy and data protection.

No. The 2024 announcement describes that year’s campaign and should not be confused with NCA’s later editions. NCA’s current Data Privacy Week overview describes the 2026 edition, scheduled for January 26–30, 2026, with a similarly worded theme. Its current materials and program details are separate from the 2024 campaign.
