Rather than introduce a new consumer GPU, the proposal would help participating organizations find and reserve existing capacity—including compute that might otherwise sit idle.
What is the National Compute Grid?
It is a proposed shared network and scheduler for AI compute. Axios describes a consortium involving AI startups, cloud providers, researchers and investors. The idea is to make scattered capacity easier to discover and use when startups, researchers or other teams have trouble securing resources.
The headline’s reference to former Google and Nvidia executives is not substantiated by the available Axios report, so those biographies cannot be confirmed here. Axios identifies Anjney Midha, head of AI holding company Amp, as a leader of the effort.
How is the Grid supposed to work?
Participants would contribute available compute and use a shared scheduler to match workloads with capacity across providers and chip systems. The system is intended to display details such as chip type, location, pricing and utilization, so users can identify a suitable resource rather than rely on one provider’s inventory.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Participants could contribute idle compute.
- Teams could reserve larger clusters for planned training runs.
- The scheduler would match workloads to capacity, taking factors such as chip type and location into account.
Midha told Axios: “Turns out, we actually do have a lot more compute than people expect. It just all needs to be interconnected. And coordinated,”
Who can use the National Compute Grid?
Axios says the announcement paper describes access opening to public-sector employees and teams, including government, education and national laboratory users. The report does not provide an application process or say that the Grid will be open to the general public.

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
It also does not establish final membership rules, confirmed participants, pricing, service guarantees or a firm operational launch date. Those terms matter: a shared capacity directory does not by itself establish that a particular user can reserve a particular cluster on acceptable commercial or technical terms.
How much AI compute capacity does the Grid have?

| Figure | What the consortium says | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Less than 15% | Net computing utilization at independent, single-tenant data centers | Consortium estimate reported by Axios; the article does not disclose the calculation method. |
| About 760 megawatts | Capacity connected or in sight | Consortium figure reported by Axios; the report does not define the status of each portion. |
| 2 gigawatts by 2030 | Stated capacity goal | Consortium target reported by Axios, not a confirmed delivery. |
The numbers indicate the scale the consortium says it is pursuing, but they do not show how much capacity is currently reservable, which chips are available, or where users can access it.
Why coordinate compute instead of adding more GPUs?
The proposal addresses a coordination problem: capacity can exist in one place while a team that needs compute cannot readily find or secure it. A shared scheduler could make idle resources more visible and allow planned workloads to use clusters across participating providers. That is different from announcing a new GPU product or proving that the overall supply shortage has been resolved.

Sam Sinha, Head of AI at 1X, told Axios: “We need to encourage a healthy AI ecosystem, and have more than two companies to own all the compute,” referring to OpenAI and Anthropic. The Grid’s proposed multi-provider approach is intended to support a broader compute ecosystem; the report does not establish how many providers will participate or what operating terms they will offer.
