Their work, as described at the time, included propulsion hardware for Orion and other Artemis missions. Since that visit, NASA’s mission plan has changed: Artemis III is now planned as a low-Earth-orbit demonstration, while Artemis IV is targeted to make the first Artemis lunar landing.
What NASA recognized at the Redmond facility
Hoburg spoke to about 200 employees and guests during the August 2025 visit, according to GeekWire’s report. The Redmond team had contributed propulsion systems to a range of NASA missions. The report said it delivered hardware for Artemis II and Artemis III, including auxiliary engines for Orion’s European-built service module, and was working on thrusters for later Artemis missions. Those descriptions reflect what was reported at the time; they do not establish the supplier’s assignments under every later mission plan.
Hoburg thanked the workforce: “They’re depending on you, and they know they can count on you.” His remarks underscored a less visible part of lunar exploration: missions rely on specialized components made and delivered by industrial teams as well as on spacecraft, rockets, and astronauts.
Four employees received NASA awards
NASA recognized four people at the gathering:
- Brett Mendenhall and Richard Mirabella received NASA’s Silver Snoopy Award. An astronaut pins the award onto the recipient’s lapel.
- Camille Samonte received the NASA Space Flight Awareness (SFA) Trailblazer Award.
- Cory Houck received the SFA Management Award.
These awards honored individuals at the event; they are distinct from the broader recognition Hoburg offered to the facility’s employees.

How NASA’s Artemis plans have changed since the visit
The 2025 GeekWire report described Artemis III as a mission expected no earlier than mid-2027 with the goal of landing astronauts on the lunar surface. NASA’s current Artemis overview, checked October 8, 2026, assigns the planned first landing to Artemis IV instead. NASA’s dates are targets, and mission plans can change.

NASA says the Artemis II crew traveled 252,756 miles from Earth, setting a human-distance record. The figure and flight duration are NASA’s reported 2026 mission details, not estimates for future Artemis flights.

Why suppliers matter to a lunar program
Rocket and spacecraft programs depend on components that may be built by specialized suppliers, then integrated into larger systems. In this case, the hardware highlighted in GeekWire’s account was propulsion equipment, including auxiliary engines associated with Orion’s European-built service module. That is a concrete example of how a supplier’s contribution can sit inside a spacecraft and support a broader mission without being the most visible part of a launch or flight.
At the event, NASA deputy associate administrator for the Moon to Mars Program Amit Kshatriya argued against treating different capabilities as an either-or choice: “It’s the wrong argument to think about picking one thing or another,” he said. “The right argument is, how do we stimulate and create missions and capability across the country in all sorts of different capability classes.” The message connects the employee recognition to the scale of the program: a series of missions draws on many kinds of expertise and hardware.

Hoburg described the exploration goal this way: “We’re using the moon as a proving ground to figure out how to get to Mars, so it’s a really exciting time.” He also said, “I want the United States of America to go to the moon.” NASA’s current sequence distinguishes the near-term objectives: Artemis II flew around the Moon, Artemis III is planned to test lander systems in Earth orbit, and Artemis IV is targeted for the first landing.
