Choose direct-attached storage (DAS) for simple extra storage or a manually managed backup for one computer. Choose network-attached storage (NAS) when several devices or people need a shared central file store, or when you want configurable network-based backup workflows. Neither replaces a separate backup: RAID can help with availability after some drive failures, but it is not a backup.

What is the difference between NAS and DAS?

DAS connects directly to a computer, most often through USB. The computer using the drive is its host; other computers on the network cannot access the DAS drive directly. To share it over a network, the host computer or a NAS must provide that sharing function, and the host must remain available and be configured correctly. Western Digital explains the direct-connection distinction.

A NAS connects to a network and makes storage available to devices through network services. Depending on the model and configuration, it may support shared folders, user permissions, backup applications, snapshots, and remote access. Synology’s DSM file-service guidance documents services including SMB, NFS, FTP, and WebDAV; check the specific NAS model and software version for supported protocols and features.

Which setup fits your needs?

Need Likely fit What to consider
Extra storage for one desktop or laptop DAS Confirm the computer has a compatible port and that the drive’s format and capacity meet your needs.
A copy of one computer’s files DAS or NAS An external drive can be a straightforward backup target. A NAS may support scheduled or versioned workflows. Choose based on automation, recovery needs, backup software, and who needs access.
Shared folders for household devices or a small team NAS Check client and protocol support, permissions, network speed, and whether remote access is supported and configured as needed.
Centralized backups from multiple devices NAS Verify that the NAS backup software supports each client and that its version history, snapshots, and offsite-copy options match your recovery needs.
A separate recovery copy Either can be a destination A USB DAS drive may serve as a backup destination on supported NAS models. Follow the device’s instructions and eject the drive safely before unplugging it.

How to compare backup, access, and recovery

Who needs access?

If one computer needs the storage, DAS avoids the network-sharing setup. If several devices or people need the same files, NAS is designed to make storage available over the network, subject to the chosen model, protocols, permissions, and network configuration.

How will backups run?

Compare manual copying with scheduled or automated jobs, whether previous file versions are retained, which devices the software supports, and how you would restore files. A NAS can centralize backup workflows, but its applications and client coverage vary; verify support for your particular devices before relying on it.

What failure are you protecting against?

RAID may keep some systems available after certain disk failures, depending on the implementation, but it does not replace an independent backup. A NAS can fail, lose disks, or be misconfigured. Synology’s backup guidance recommends the 3-2-1 approach: three copies of data, on two storage mediums, with one copy offsite. It also warns that RAID crashes and hard-drive failures can still cause data loss.

Synology lists Hyper Backup, Snapshot Replication, Active Backup for Business, USB Copy, and Cloud Sync as possible parts of a data-protection setup. Their availability and suitability depend on the system and use case. For important files, keep another copy on separate media and in an offsite or otherwise separately protected location appropriate to your data.

How much capacity and expansion do you need?

Compare usable capacity rather than just the sum of the installed drives. For a NAS, check bay count, supported drive sizes, and expansion options on the specific model. For DAS, check the capacity and connection options of the drive or enclosure you plan to use.

What speed do you actually need?

There is no universal rule that NAS or DAS is faster. Performance depends on the drive, enclosure, host interface, Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection, and workload. Match the complete setup to your actual file sizes and use pattern rather than choosing by category alone.

What is the total cost and maintenance burden?

Account for the enclosure and drives, any network upgrades, power, separate backup media, software, and the time required to configure and maintain the system. Comparable current prices are not established here, so compare specific configurations rather than assuming either category is cheaper.

Can other computers access a DAS drive?

Not directly just because it is connected to one computer. To make that drive accessible to other computers, the connected computer or a NAS has to share or host it over the network. That introduces a dependency on the host and its configuration. A NAS provides network storage services itself, though its access still depends on compatible clients and correct setup.

Can a USB DAS drive back up a NAS?

Some NAS systems support a USB drive as a backup destination. Seagate’s Business Storage 2-Bay NAS manual documents this workflow for its particular system and instructs users to eject the drive before disconnecting it to avoid filesystem damage. Do not assume every NAS supports the same procedure; consult the instructions for the model you own.

What should you check before choosing hardware?

  • For a NAS enclosure: match drive bays and capacity to current and future needs; verify client backup support, network ports, drive compatibility, software support lifetime, security updates, and remote-access design.
  • For an external USB drive: match its connector and capacity to the host computer, and plan for safe ejection and another copy of important data.
  • For NAS-compatible internal drives: confirm compatibility against the NAS maker’s supported-drive information for your specific enclosure.
  • For either setup: decide where the independent recovery copy will live and how you will restore from it.
