For a ZFS-based NAS such as TrueNAS, add RAM first if the system is short on memory. ZFS uses RAM for its primary read cache, the ARC, and RAM is faster than a disk-backed cache. An SSD read cache (L2ARC) can help a narrower case: repeated reads that miss in RAM, when the active data and workload suit the cache. It is not a general-purpose speed upgrade.

The guidance below is specific to ZFS and TrueNAS. Other NAS platforms may use different caching systems, so check your model’s supported memory and storage options before buying anything.

What is the difference between NAS RAM and SSD cache?

In ZFS, the ARC is the first-level read cache held in RAM. The L2ARC is an optional, second-level read cache on a separate device, commonly an SSD. ZFS can use L2ARC to retain additional read data, but it still needs RAM to manage that cache. TrueNAS’s ZFS Primer describes RAM as faster than disk-backed L2ARC and advises adding as much RAM as possible before considering L2ARC.

These are read-cache roles, not interchangeable upgrades: RAM can support the ARC and the rest of the system, while L2ARC only extends read caching. A cache SSD does not automatically improve writes.

Should you add RAM or SSD cache to your NAS?

Choose When it is the better fit What to keep in mind
More RAM System memory is limiting the NAS, or you want to expand the faster first-level ARC. Check the exact NAS model’s supported memory type and capacity.
SSD L2ARC Repeated or random reads miss in RAM, and the active dataset and access pattern are suitable for an additional read cache. L2ARC consumes RAM for its metadata; choose a device that performs well relative to the pool it serves, and verify platform support.

Use the table as a decision guide, not a promise of a speed increase. TrueNAS says L2ARC benefits depend on the workload and the relationship between active data, RAM, and cache. More cache capacity alone does not establish that the SSD will be useful.

Will an SSD cache speed up your NAS?

It may, if your workload repeatedly reads data that does not fit in RAM but can be served effectively from L2ARC. The fit is strongest when reads are frequent or random and the SSD’s latency and random-read performance are appropriate compared with the underlying storage. TrueNAS’s L2ARC guidance discusses these workload and device considerations, while warning that L2ARC is not always the best choice.

Western Digital 4TB WD Red SA500 NAS 3D NAND Internal SSD Solid State Drive - SATA III 6 Gb/s, 2.5"/7mm, Up to 560 MB/s - WDS400T2R0A
  • Storage optimized for caching in NAS systems to rapidly access your most frequently used files.
  • Superior endurance can handle the heavy read and write loads demanded by NAS, giving you the reliability you need in a 24/7 environment.
  • Purpose-built for NAS with proven Western Digital 3D NAND to deliver maximum SATA performance to both home and business users.
  • Reduces latency and improves responsiveness for OLTP databases, multi-user environments, photo rendering, 4K and 8K video editing, and more.
  • Available in 2.5” and M.2 form factors to fit the slots in modern NAS systems.

It is less compelling when the working data already fits in ARC, reads are not repeated, or the workload is not meaningfully served by the proposed cache. An SSD’s advertised capacity, by itself, says nothing about whether it will reduce your NAS’s read latency.

Does an SSD cache improve NAS write speed?

L2ARC is a read cache. Do not add it expecting general write acceleration. ZFS has a separate feature called SLOG, associated with synchronous writes and selected workloads such as some NFS and database use cases. TrueNAS’s Hardware Guide describes that distinction; SLOG is not a substitute for L2ARC or a general-purpose SSD cache.

How to decide based on your workload

  1. Check whether memory is the constraint. Review system memory use and ARC behavior using the monitoring tools available for your NAS. TrueNAS points to ARC monitoring in its ZFS Primer. Do not infer a need for L2ARC from the desired cache size alone.
  2. Identify the reads you want to accelerate. Determine whether users or services repeatedly access data that is larger than the ARC and whether those reads are being missed by RAM. If the workload is primarily writes, L2ARC is the wrong feature to target.
  3. Compare the cache device with the pool. L2ARC needs to perform well relative to the storage media it serves. TrueNAS discusses enterprise-grade NVMe as an option in relevant configurations, not as a universal recommendation.
  4. Verify compatibility before purchase. Check the exact NAS model’s supported RAM type and maximum capacity, plus its available and supported SSD interface. Hardware support varies by system.
  5. Measure after the change. Observe system and ARC behavior and evaluate whether the proposed cache is actually being used effectively. A larger cache device is not proof that the workload benefits.

What happens if an L2ARC device fails?

TrueNAS’s L2ARC documentation says a cache-device failure does not affect pool integrity, though it can affect read performance. That does not make compatibility or monitoring unnecessary: use a supported device and evaluate whether its contribution justifies the added hardware.
