NAS snapshots give you a quick way to roll back files to an earlier point in time; backups give you a recovery copy on a destination you choose. A snapshot on the same volume can help with accidental edits, deletions, or corruption, but it does not by itself protect against failure of that volume or NAS. For broader protection, pair snapshots with a separately stored backup—and, when your risks call for it, an off-site or isolated copy.
What a NAS snapshot stores
A snapshot records the state of data at a particular point in time. Microsoft’s documentation defines a volume shadow copy as a snapshot that duplicates the data on a volume at one well-defined instant. That describes Microsoft’s VSS implementation, not every NAS vendor’s design. In Synology’s Snapshot Replication, snapshots are stored on the same volume and use little additional space; they can let you recover a previous state after accidental modification or deletion.
Snapshots are useful when you need to undo a change without restoring an entire backup. Depending on the NAS and its configuration, you may be able to browse or restore an earlier version. How snapshots are stored, retained, and restored varies by platform.
What a backup stores
A backup is a maintained recovery copy written to a destination according to a schedule and retention policy, with a defined way to restore it. Unlike a same-volume snapshot, a backup can be directed to a separate device or location. Synology documents Hyper Backup destinations including USB storage and another NAS; it can also back up applications and system configurations. Other destinations and capabilities depend on the NAS and backup software.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The backup’s value depends on what it includes, where the copy lives, how long versions are kept, and whether you can restore it. A successful backup job is not proof that the data can be recovered. Microsoft recommends exercising recovery and measuring recovery time and data-loss objectives.
Snapshots vs. backups at a glance
| Decision | Snapshots | Backups |
|---|---|---|
| Main purpose | Quick rollback to a prior state on the storage system. | Recovery from a broader failure using a retained copy. |
| Where the data lives | In Synology’s documented implementation, on the same volume; other platforms vary. | A supported destination such as USB storage or another NAS; options vary by tool. |
| Typical recovery | Browse or restore a previous state; replicated snapshots may support failover. | Restore selected data or, depending on the product, broader system or application data. |
| Failure boundary | Same-volume snapshots share some hardware, site, and administrative risks with source data. | A separate or isolated destination can cross a device, site, or access boundary. |
| Trade-off | Frequent recovery points can make local rollback quick, while retention uses storage. | More flexibility in destination and retention, with restore time, cost, and setup varying by configuration. |
This comparison reflects Synology’s documented tools and Microsoft’s resilience guidance; it is not a universal description of every NAS.

Are NAS snapshots a backup?
A snapshot is a recovery feature, but a snapshot on the same volume is not an independent backup copy. It may protect against user error or some kinds of corruption, yet the same NAS or volume failure can put both the current data and its snapshots at risk. Synology recommends using a different destination for further protection against data loss.
Do snapshots protect against drive failure or ransomware?
Drive or NAS failure
Same-volume snapshots share a failure boundary with the source. If the volume or NAS becomes unavailable or fails, those snapshots may not be available either. A separate backup destination can reduce that shared risk; an off-site copy can address a site-level disaster.

Ransomware and unwanted changes
Snapshots can offer a way back to an earlier state, but replication or synchronization may also carry unwanted changes to another system. Synology describes replication as syncing snapshots between source and destination servers. Treat replication as one layer—not proof of an isolated recovery copy—and check retention, immutability, and administrative separation. Microsoft’s guidance recommends independent immutable copies for ransomware-resilient architectures.
How to combine snapshots and backups
- Enable snapshots for local rollback. Choose a schedule and retention period that fit the data and available storage, and confirm how users or administrators can browse and restore earlier states on your NAS.
- Back up to a distinct destination. Choose a supported destination such as USB storage or another NAS. Keep it separate from the source NAS when practical; a second device is more useful if the same failure or access can’t affect both copies.
- Add an off-site or isolated copy if your risks require it. This can help address site disasters and ransomware, but check that the destination is supported and that access and retention settings provide meaningful separation.
- Test restores periodically. Restore representative files and, where relevant, application or configuration data. Record how much data you can recover and how long recovery takes; a completed job alone does not demonstrate a usable recovery path.
Synology presents the “3 copies, 2 storage mediums, 1 offsite” approach as a 3-2-1 strategy. It is a recommendation, not a measured guarantee, and the right design depends on what you need to recover and the failures you need to withstand.

Choose based on what you need to recover
- Accidental deletion or edits: snapshots can provide fast local rollback; a backup adds another recovery path.
- Failure of the NAS, volume, or site: use a backup on a separate device or location rather than relying only on same-volume snapshots.
- Ransomware or compromised access: look for retained, immutable or otherwise isolated copies, with administrative access separated where possible.
- Applications and system settings: verify that the selected backup tool includes them and that its restore process can recover what you need.
Exact behavior depends on NAS model, filesystem, snapshot configuration, backup software, retention, and threat model. Microsoft’s Azure Files and Azure NetApp Files documentation also distinguishes snapshots from separately stored backup copies, but those are cloud services, not consumer NAS appliances; their behavior should not be assumed to apply to every NAS.
