For wildfire smoke in the United States, choose a well-fitting NIOSH-approved N95 if you can wear it correctly. EPA and CDC wildfire guidance specifically points to NIOSH-approved N95 or P100 respirators when going outside in smoky air is necessary. A KN95 is a respirator made to an international standard, but the label alone does not establish NIOSH approval or guarantee that it fits your face. Either type can leak if it does not seal; neither filters gases such as carbon monoxide.
How N95 and KN95 compare for wildfire smoke
| Question | N95 | KN95 |
|---|---|---|
| What the label means | A U.S. respirator category; for the EPA wildfire recommendation, look for a particulate respirator marked “NIOSH” and “N95.” | A respirator category conforming to an international standard; a KN95 label by itself does not establish NIOSH approval. |
| Which has the clearest support in U.S. wildfire guidance? | EPA and CDC guidance names NIOSH-approved N95 respirators (or P100s) for reducing particle exposure when going outdoors in smoke is necessary. | The cited guidance does not identify KN95 as the preferred choice for wildfire smoke. |
| Does the label guarantee a good seal on your face? | No. Fit depends on the model, size, and wearer. | No. Fit depends on the model, size, and wearer. |
| Does it protect against every smoke hazard? | No. Filtering facepiece respirators do not protect against gases such as carbon monoxide. | No. Filtering facepiece respirators do not protect against gases such as carbon monoxide. |
EPA advises choosing a particulate respirator tested and approved by NIOSH, marked with “NIOSH” and either “N95” or “P100” (EPA wildfire smoke and ash guidance). CDC describes KN95s as an international-standard respirator category (CDC/NIOSH respirator types). That distinction makes a NIOSH-approved N95 the clearest match to U.S. wildfire recommendations; it does not mean every KN95 is poor or that every N95 will fit every person.
CDC/NIOSH says NIOSH-approved filtering facepiece respirators achieve a minimum 95% filtration efficiency. That is a classification and test-performance statement, not a promise of the protection a particular person will receive in real use. The cited official guidance does not provide a head-to-head wildfire exposure result comparing N95s and KN95s across wearers.
Fit matters more than the label alone
A respirator can only reduce exposure as intended when air passes through its filter rather than leaking around the edges. Choose a size and shape that covers your nose and fits under your chin. Follow the package directions for strap placement and, if present, molding the nosepiece.

- KN95 face masks made in China (not in US).
- Put it on as directed. Position the straps and adjust the nosepiece according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Check the seal each time. Feel for air escaping around the edges. CDC says escaping air or fogging glasses can indicate a poor seal.
- Try another style or size if it leaks. Facial hair in the sealing area, jewelry, or an unsuitable fit can create gaps.
This user seal check is different from occupational fit testing. A workplace respirator program may require supervised fit testing; that is not a general consumer requirement.
What these respirators do—and do not—protect against
N95 and KN95 filtering facepiece respirators are intended to filter particles, including fine particles in wildfire smoke. They do not protect against gases such as carbon monoxide and do not supply oxygen, so they are not complete protection from every wildfire-smoke hazard (CDC/NIOSH wildfire smoke guidance for outdoor workers).

Treat a respirator as one way to reduce particle exposure, not as a reason to stay in smoky conditions. Reduce time outdoors when possible, follow local air-quality advice, and obey evacuation and emergency instructions. EPA describes N95 or P100 use for situations when someone must spend extended time outdoors in smoky air or an ash-covered area (EPA wildfire smoke and ash guidance).

Replace a disposable N95 when it is no longer in good condition
CDC advises replacing an N95 if it becomes wet, dirty, damaged, or no longer fits snugly. Do not wash it or heat it to sterilize it. Follow the respirator manufacturer’s instructions for use and replacement (CDC/NIOSH instructions for using an N95).

Consider health, heat, and activity
Respirators may be uncomfortable or harder to tolerate during heat or physical activity. CDC worker guidance notes heat-related illness concerns and the need for breaks and hydration (CDC/NIOSH guidance on protecting workers and the public). People with heart or lung problems should consult a clinician before using an N95.
Children need an appropriate fit
For a child age two or older, a respirator is an option only if an appropriate model fits and the child can wear it properly. CDC says children younger than two should not wear masks or respirators. Follow current local guidance for children during smoke events.

- Funight Ventilation Series KN95 Face Masks follow the GB2626-2019 respiratory protection standards. These standards require all masks to have a filtration efficiency of at least 95%, which means the material can filter out harmful molecules such as fine particles and dust.
- Ventilation Series KN95 Face Masks maintain a strict filtration efficiency standard while keeping the design comfortable and breathable. Each KN95 mask is composed of water column-grade melt-blown fabric, which has been proven to be more efficient than cloth masks due to its electrostatic properties. Through this design, Funight Ventilation Series KN95 Mask has achieved breathing resistance that is 20% better than that of the GB2626-2020 standard.
- Funight Black Face Mask: Increasing the width of the ear loop to 5.6 mm reduces pain in the ear and makes it more comfortable. And the ultrasonic welding technology we use makes the surfaces of two objects form a fusion between the molecular layers, without any rough stitches and thread ends, and make the ear hook stronger.
- 5-Ply Layers of Protective Filtration – Our KN95 masks are truly made of 5 layers with 2 non-woven outer layers as well as 2 melt-blown inner layers and a non-woven middle layer to absorb small moisture particles. Which is more protective than a 3-ply disposable mask to help filter out 95% of particles.

Workplace use has separate requirements
If an employer requires respiratory protection, CDC says it must be part of an OSHA-compliant respiratory protection program. This workplace rule is distinct from choosing a consumer respirator for personal use.
