Mycroft AI was an early open-source voice-assistant project, but the available project histories do not establish that it was the world’s first. The distinction matters today: Mycroft software, the company that developed it, and Mycroft-branded hardware are related but separate. OpenVoiceOS (OVOS) grew from the Mycroft community and continues work in that ecosystem as a distinct project; its manual now labels support for the Mark II device best-effort legacy.
Was Mycroft AI the world’s first open-source voice assistant?
That superlative is not established by the available evidence. OpenVoiceOS’s history dates the Mycroft Kickstarter for Mark I to 2015 and says Mycroft software was publicly released under the GPL in May 2016. Those milestones support calling Mycroft an early open-source voice-assistant project, but they do not prove it was first worldwide: that would require a comparative history of earlier voice-assistant projects and their licenses.
Mycroft’s core README describes it as “a hackable open source voice assistant” and identifies Open Voice OS and Neon-core as “spiritual successors.” Those are the maintainers’ descriptions, not proof of a first-place claim. Mycroft core README · OpenVoiceOS on GitHub
What is Mycroft AI, and what happened to it?
“Mycroft” can mean the software project, the company behind it, or its hardware products. Keeping those meanings separate helps explain why the name still appears in current community work even though the company’s history took a different course.

The project and its early milestones
OpenVoiceOS’s account dates the Mycroft AI Kickstarter launch for Mark I to August 2015. It dates the Mark I release to September 2017 and the Mark II Kickstarter launch to January 2018. Separately, its project history says Mycroft software became publicly available under the GPL in May 2016. These dates describe different milestones, rather than a single launch date.
The company and the community’s continuation
According to the OpenVoiceOS-authored history, Mycroft announced layoffs in November 2022; the project’s About history says a February 2023 partnership with Neon AI was intended to take over Mark II fulfilments and that Mycroft later ceased business. The project history also refers to Mycroft’s shuttering. These are accounts published by the community project, not an independently adjudicated company history. Is OpenVoiceOS the successor to Mycroft?
OpenVoiceOS is a community-driven continuation in the Mycroft ecosystem, but it is not simply the old company under a new name. The OVOS history says MycroftOS was renamed OpenVoiceOS — Mycroft Edition in October 2020 and that the OVOS team formed at that time. The OpenVoiceOS Foundation says it was declared in August 2024; a press page dated May 2025 describes its legal status and an OVOS stable release. OVOS has its own software and organization.
OpenVoiceOS describes itself as open source and says it “can run offline for added privacy.” That is the project’s own description, not independent validation that every installation works fully offline or has been audited. Actual offline behavior depends on the configuration and components used. OpenVoiceOS About page · OpenVoiceOS Foundation

What is the Mycroft Mark II, and can you still use it?
The Mark II is a voice-assistant device built around a Raspberry Pi 4, touchscreen, and custom SJ201 audio board. The OVOS technical manual describes its Mark II support as “best-effort legacy,” so it should not be treated as a currently supported, turnkey consumer device. The manual also says OVOS and Neon use separate packages and warns against mixing them.
- If you already own a Mark II: consult the current technical documentation before changing its software, and follow one project’s package guidance rather than combining OVOS and Neon packages.
- If you are looking for a replacement part: the documented platform includes a Raspberry Pi 4 board, but that does not make a bare board a complete assistant. Exact replacement compatibility and current stock are not established by the manual.

Mycroft’s history is useful context, but choosing a project requires checking present-day details. The sources here do not provide a controlled feature comparison of OVOS, Neon, or other assistants, so they do not support declaring a winner. Check the specific installation target, ongoing support, cloud-service dependencies, available speech-recognition and speech-synthesis components, privacy configuration, and quality of community documentation for the version you intend to run.

- Privacy and connectivity: treat “can run offline” as a project-level capability claim, then verify whether the components and configuration you plan to use actually avoid network services.
- Hardware: check compatibility for the complete device and its peripherals, not just whether a Raspberry Pi board is present.
- Documentation: use the project’s own current installation and package instructions, especially when two projects have separate packages.
