A broken layout or unfamiliar style can be a clue, but it does not prove a site has been hacked. Treat the visual change as a reason to check the site’s files, accounts, hosting records and Google Search Console—not as a diagnosis. This first-person title describes an incident that has not been independently verified, so the steps below are general response guidance, not a forensic account of what happened to that particular site.

When a CSS-looking problem deserves a security check

Start by separating what you observed from what you suspect. Record the affected pages, the time and timezone, what looked different, and any recent plugin, theme or code changes. A style regression can come from an ordinary update or configuration error; an intrusion becomes more plausible when the visual symptom appears alongside independent evidence.

  • Compare site files with known-clean copies or version-control history for unfamiliar edits.
  • Look for pages, scripts, administrator accounts or database content you did not create.
  • Review hosting logs and ask your provider to check for suspicious access or changes.
  • Check Google Search Console’s Security Issues report and any browser or Safe Browsing warnings.

Search Console can help identify security issues, but no single clean homepage, scanner result or warning status proves that every route, file, account and database record is clean. Google’s guidance on dangerous-site labels is at Google Search Console Help.

How a compromise can hide behind a normal-looking site

Malicious changes are not always obvious in the page a site owner sees. Attackers may add new PHP or JavaScript files, modify legitimate files, alter .htaccess rules, or create spam pages. Google’s historical case studies include unfamiliar pharmaceutical links and hidden content, injected scripts in footer.php, index.php and functions.php, and redirects that sent search-engine visitors to generated spam pages. These are examples, not a checklist that proves a site was hacked: Google’s hacked-site case studies and Google’s injected-URL guidance.

Selective delivery can make the problem harder to spot: a malicious page or redirect may be shown only to particular visitors or search crawlers. A familiar-looking homepage therefore cannot rule out compromised files or less-visible URLs.

What to do before changing files

  1. Document the evidence. Note the symptom, time and timezone, recent software changes, and hosting environment. Preserve relevant warning messages and logs where you can.
  2. Preserve a backup. Create or retain a copy before destructive cleanup so you can investigate and recover. A backup is not automatically safe to restore: it may contain the same compromise. WordPress.org’s documentation says, “Backups are a critical piece of your continuation of operations, and should be something you actively plan for moving forward.” (WordPress.org, “FAQ My site was hacked,” last updated July 26, 2026.)
  3. Contact your hosting provider. Ask them to review hosting access and affected files, and coordinate before cleanup—particularly on shared hosting, where provider-side investigation may be important.
  4. Scan from more than one angle. WordPress.org recommends combining application-level and remote scanners because they examine different things. Scan the local computer used to administer the site as well; a compromised device or stolen credentials can undermine a server cleanup.

Contain the incident, then clean and secure the site

Google’s guidance is to take a hacked site offline while you identify and clean compromised pages and secure the site, then bring it back online. If you cannot safely investigate or the incident is sophisticated, get help from a qualified professional rather than making uncertain changes to a live site. See Google’s hacked-site guidance.

Cleanup means more than deleting the first suspicious file. Review files, databases, accounts and hosting access; restore clean files where appropriate; update vulnerable software; and determine how the attacker got in. For WordPress, the documentation discusses resetting credentials, replacing core files with clean copies where appropriate, updating software and investigating the entry point. Change passwords again after cleanup so credentials exposed during the incident are not left in use.

These actions are general guidance, not a diagnosis of the incident described in the title. A scanner, password reset or backup restore on its own does not establish that remediation is complete.

Choose a recovery approach that matches the evidence and risk

Before settling on a cleanup plan, compare what it preserves and what it can miss:

Approach What to weigh
Investigate and clean with your hosting provider Can bring hosting-side records and access into the review. Agree on evidence preservation, the scope of file, database and account checks, and how the entry point will be closed.
Restore a known-clean backup May make recovery easier, but only if the backup predates the compromise and is checked before restoration. Restoring an infected backup can reintroduce the problem.
Use scanners and perform cleanup yourself May be suitable when you have the access and skills to assess results across the application and remote site. A scanner’s clean result is not proof that every component is clean.
Hire a qualified professional Consider this when the incident is sophisticated, the entry point is unclear, or you lack the access or expertise to assess the site safely. Confirm that the work covers evidence, affected components and prevention of reinfection.

Whichever route you choose, assess evidence preserved before cleanup, how completely files, databases, accounts and hosting were reviewed, whether the entry point was closed, and the downtime and reinfection risks of any restore.

Request a Google review only after the site is fixed

If Google reports a security issue, use Search Console’s Security Issues report and follow Google’s cleanup guidance. Request a review only after the problem is truly fixed, and explain what you did to clean and secure the site. Google says malware reviews take a few days; reviews for hacked spam can take up to several weeks. Browser and Search Console warning updates may also lag by days, so a review request does not promise immediate warning removal or ranking recovery. Details are on Google’s Security Issues help page.
