Yes—you can connect multiple NVMe drives through one PCIe card without motherboard bifurcation, but the card must contain a PCIe switch. A switch adapter manages the downstream drive connections itself; a passive multi-drive adapter depends on the motherboard splitting its PCIe lanes and will not solve a lack of bifurcation support.

How to tell whether a multi-NVMe card needs bifurcation

Look for an onboard PCIe switch in the manufacturer’s specifications. A switched card presents multiple downstream NVMe devices through one upstream PCIe link, so the host does not need to divide that link into separate device links. A passive card has no such switch and relies on the motherboard or CPU to provide the required lane split.

HighPoint describes integrated switching in its NVMe adapter families. Its NVMe switch product family lists products for PCIe Gen3, Gen4 and Gen5; those are product-family specifications, not a promise that every model fits every system.

What to check before choosing an adapter

Drive form factor and connections

M.2 drives plug into M.2 sockets. U.2 and U.3 drives generally connect by cable or through a backplane. These approaches are not interchangeable: check the adapter’s connectors and the exact cable path required by the SSD. HighPoint markets its Rocket 1180 for U.2, while supported cabling solutions can also connect U.2/U.3 or M.2 NVMe devices.

SABRENT M.2 NVMe SSD to PCIe x16 Adapter Card, Gen5, Heatsink
  • NVMe M-KEY DRIVES ONLY, NOT SATA: This card takes M.2 M-key NVMe SSDs in the 2230, 2242, 2260 and 2280 lengths, plus older B+M key PCIe (AHCI/NVMe) drives. It does NOT support SATA M.2 drives — if your drive says SATA on the label, it will not work here. Your motherboard also has to be NVMe-capable to boot or see the drive.
  • GEN5 SPEED COMES FROM YOUR SLOT: The card connects at x4 and supports up to PCIe 5.0, for up to 16GBps bidirectional when the host slot is Gen5. In a Gen4 or Gen3 slot it runs at that slot's speed, not Gen5 — the card cannot add a generation your motherboard doesn't have. Check your slot generation before you buy if Gen5 throughput is the goal.
  • ONE DRIVE, x16 CONNECTOR, NO BIFURCATION NEEDED: This is a single M.2 card with an x16 physical edge for stability, and it may fit some x4/x8 slots. Because it uses one drive it does not need motherboard bifurcation support. Confirm you have a free full-length PCIe slot and clearance around it — a tall CPU cooler, GPU or fan sitting over the slot can block the card.
  • TOOL-FREE INSTALL, NO SCREWS: Drop the SSD in and lock it down without hunting for a tiny M.2 screw or a screwdriver. Nothing to lose, nothing to strip, and the drive comes back out just as fast when you want to move it to another machine.
  • COOL AND QUIET, NO FAN: A built-in aluminum heatsink and thermal padding keep the SSD's temperature down under sustained load with no active cooling, so there is no extra fan noise in the case. It is SABRENT — register your product on the manufacturer's website for technical support.

Host slot and system compatibility

No bifurcation requirement does not mean the card works in any PCIe slot. Confirm the physical slot, its electrical lane count, platform enumeration, clearance and cooling. The Rocket 1180 specifies a PCIe 3.0 x16 host interface. Check the manufacturer’s compatibility documentation for your exact system, and verify that your operating system and any required drivers support the configuration.

Shared bandwidth

A PCIe switch provides connections to multiple drives; it does not multiply the bandwidth available from the upstream slot. Drives share that host link when active. Consider the slot’s PCIe generation and negotiated width alongside the number of drives and your workload. Published maximum drive counts are not independent performance results.

GLOTRENDS M.2 NVMe to PCIe 4.0 X4 Adapter with Heatsink for NVMe SSD
  • This adapter turns your motherboard's PCIE X4/X8/X16 slot into an M.2 Key M slot for M.2 NVMe SSD installation. PCIE X1/PCI slots aren't supported. It comes with heatsinks that cool M.2 SSDs by 5 - 20°C.
  • Works with PCIE 4.0/3.0 M.2 NVMe SSDs. For full PCIE 4.0 X4 speed, your CPU, slots, and SSD must all support it. Note: Intel CPUs below 11th gen don't support PCIE 4.0.
  • No capacity limit for M.2 NVMe SSDs (2T, 4T work). Supports 2230/2242/2260/2280 sizes. New SSDs need initialization and formatting. M.2 SATA SSDs aren't supported.
  • Compatible with Windows 11/10/8, Linux, and Mac OS. Support OS boot from NVMe SSD, except on some old motherboards (usable as storage then). Windows 7 lacks native NVMe driver; download from Microsoft or SSD manufacture site.
  • Includes 12cm regular and 8cm low - profile brackets for any PC frame. FCC and CE certified. Get lifetime tech support - contact us for troubleshooting.

RAID, hot-swap and thermal requirements

Some adapters provide NVMe switching without making RAID or hot-swap a given. Other product lines add vendor RAID features or hot-swap support. Confirm those capabilities, software support, card dimensions and cooling requirements for the specific model rather than inferring them from the fact that it uses a switch.

A practical selection checklist

  • Confirm the adapter has an onboard PCIe switch and explicitly does not rely on bifurcation.
  • Match the adapter to M.2 sockets or the U.2/U.3 cable or backplane path your drives require.
  • Check the host slot’s physical fit, electrical lanes, PCIe generation and platform compatibility.
  • Compare the shared upstream link with the number of drives and the work you expect them to do.
  • Verify operating-system and driver support, plus RAID or hot-swap features if you need them.
  • Check the card’s clearance and cooling requirements and confirm the documentation for your specific system and adapter revision.

HighPoint states that the Rocket 1180 works in industry-standard PCIe 3.0 slots without bifurcation or a specific motherboard brand or model. That is the manufacturer’s compatibility claim, not independent validation for every system. Likewise, HighPoint’s statement that its switch technology can use all 16 upstream lanes with as many as eight M.2 SSDs is a vendor claim, not an independently measured performance result.
