If Windows 11 reports that msvcr120.dll is missing, install the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable Packages for Visual Studio 2013. The DLL belongs to the VC++ 12.0 runtime, which is separate from the newer Visual C++ v14 package. Match the redistributable architecture to the application: use x64 for a 64-bit app and x86 for a 32-bit app, even on 64-bit Windows.
Download msvcr120.dll safely for Windows 11
Use Microsoft’s Visual C++ Redistributable Packages for Visual Studio 2013 download page.
- Open the Microsoft Download Center page.
- Choose a language from Select language.
- Click Download.
- Select
vcredist_x64.exefor a 64-bit application orvcredist_x86.exefor a 32-bit application. - Click Download again and save the installer.
- Run the downloaded file, accept the license terms, and select Install.
- Restart the affected application. Restart Windows too if the installer requests it.
The Microsoft Download Center lists the package as version 2013, published July 15, 2024. It lists the x64 installer as vcredist_x64.exe, with a size of 6.9 MB. Source: Microsoft Download Center.
Choose x64 or x86 correctly

An x64 redistributable cannot satisfy a 32-bit application’s x86 runtime dependency. Many older games and utilities are 32-bit even when they run on 64-bit Windows 11.
What msvcr120.dll is
msvcr120.dll is part of the Microsoft Visual C++ 2013 runtime, also called Visual C++ 12.0. Programs built with Visual Studio 2013 can require this runtime before they start.
The redistributable installs runtime components including the C Runtime, Standard C++, ATL, MFC, C++ AMP, and OpenMP. A message naming msvcr120.dll does not prove that this is the only missing file; an application may also need files such as msvcp120.dll, vccorlib120.dll, or vcomp120.dll. The names can be confusing: on 64-bit Windows, System32 contains 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files.
Microsoft documents the x64 DLL in the current Visual Studio 2013 Update 5 redistributable as version 12.0.40664.0, with a listed size of 941 KB. Source: Microsoft Support. To check a file, right-click it, select Properties, and open the Details tab. Do not assume a random file with the same name is equivalent; architecture, version, and authenticity matter.
Install from an elevated Command Prompt
For a scripted or unattended installation, place the downloaded installer in a known folder and open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin). Change to the folder containing the installer, then run:

Use vcredist_x86.exe in the command instead for the 32-bit package. To create an installation log, use:
vcredist_x64.exe /install /passive /norestart /log vc2013-install.txt

To display the installer’s built-in help, run vcredist_x64.exe /?. The help switches include /?, /h, and /help. Administrative privileges are required; launching the installer normally may show a User Account Control prompt.
If the error remains after installation
Install the other architecture
If you installed x64 but the program is 32-bit, install vcredist_x86.exe as well. This is a common architecture mismatch on 64-bit Windows.
Repair the VC++ 2013 installation
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Search for Microsoft Visual C++ 2013 Redistributable.
- Use the three-dot menu and choose Modify or Change, if available.
- Choose Repair.
- Repeat for the x86 or x64 entry if both are installed.
You can also run the installer with /repair.
Check for another missing dependency
Installing VC++ 2013 fixes only dependencies supplied by that runtime. The program may still need DirectX components, a .NET runtime, a driver, or another application-specific dependency. If the error changes to msvcp120.dll or another 120-suffixed file, keep VC++ 2013 installed and investigate the new dependency instead of downloading a replacement DLL from an unofficial site.
Reinstall or update the affected program
An incomplete application installation can cause a missing-DLL message even when the runtime is present. Use the program’s own installer or its publisher’s support page. Do not copy a DLL from another computer or Windows installation.

Check whether the installer skipped installation
Redistributable installers check whether a more recent applicable package is already installed; if so, the package being run may not install. With Visual Studio 2015 and later packages, setup can report an installation failure even when a newer version is present. Check Settings → Apps → Installed apps for both the 2013 x86 and x64 entries, and use Repair where available. Do not download msvcr120.dll from a DLL website
Third-party DLL sites are not Microsoft’s supported distribution channel. A standalone file may have the wrong architecture, be incompatible or damaged, or come with unwanted software. Copying it to System32 also does not install the rest of the runtime. Use the Microsoft redistributable installer to install the related components together.
Compatibility note for Windows 11
Visual C++ 2013 is a legacy runtime that Microsoft labels “no longer supported.” The original Download Center page does not list Windows 11 among its supported operating systems. Older Windows applications may still depend on this runtime, and Visual C++ 2013 redistributables remain installed side by side with newer redistributables. Do not assume that installing the newest Visual C++ v14 package fixes every msvcr120.dll error. VC++ 2013 is separate from v14; install the architecture-matched Visual Studio 2013 redistributable required by the application.

Which msvcr120.dll download do I need on 64-bit Windows 11?
Use vcredist_x64.exe for a 64-bit application and vcredist_x86.exe for a 32-bit application. If you use applications of both architectures, install both packages.
Will the latest Visual C++ redistributable fix msvcr120.dll?
Not necessarily. VC++ 2013 is separate from the newer v14 redistributables. A program that requires msvcr120.dll needs the Visual Studio 2013 runtime.
Where is msvcr120.dll installed?
The x64 copy is documented under %WinDir%\System32. On 64-bit Windows, the x86 copy is documented under %WinDir%\SysWOW64.
Can I copy msvcr120.dll into System32?
That is not Microsoft’s recommended installation method. Install the complete Visual C++ 2013 redistributable from Microsoft so the related runtime files and correct architecture are installed together.

For a 64-bit program showing an msvcr120.dll error on Windows 11, install Microsoft’s vcredist_x64.exe for Visual C++ 2013. For a 32-bit program, install vcredist_x86.exe; installing both is appropriate when you run applications of both architectures. Avoid standalone DLL downloads, and remember that VC++ 2013 remains separate from newer Visual C++ packages.
