Choose a vendor partner program for the service you plan to deliver—not for the biggest advertised discount or the most impressive-sounding tier. Before committing, compare eligibility, written net economics, the work your team must absorb, benefits you can actually access, customer and renewal control, territory rules, and what happens when the relationship ends. A program can be valuable for one MSP and a poor fit for another; there is no universal winner in the documented examples below.
Start with one representative customer and service package, then ask every shortlisted vendor or distributor to price and explain that same scenario in writing. This guide shows how to evaluate the offer and what Microsoft, AWS, ConnectWise, Fortinet, and Sophos publicly document about their distinct program models. Details and policies can change; confirm applicable terms for your region and tier before relying on them. Microsoft’s CSP overview
What should an MSP evaluate in a vendor partner program?
Evaluate the program against the services your MSP intends to sell and operate. A useful comparison tests ten areas: service-model fit; eligibility and time to qualify; buy price and permitted resale model; incentives and attribution; deal registration and renewal ownership; billing and provisioning effort; support responsibilities and escalation commitments; training and sales enablement at your attainable tier; security and compliance duties; and contract, customer-portability, and termination terms.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThese are not interchangeable benefits. Microsoft’s Cloud Solution Provider (CSP) program distinguishes indirect resale through a distributor from direct billing. AWS’s MSP program is a technical-and-business validation. ConnectWise describes tiered go-to-market support. Fortinet Engage includes different partner models, including MSSP. Each should be assessed against the MSP’s intended business, not treated as a simple discount ladder.

Use one customer scenario for every offer
Write down a representative customer profile, the territory where service will be delivered, expected seats or devices, likely monthly changes, and the support hours and service commitments you intend to provide. Use that same scenario with each vendor or distributor. Without a shared baseline, one offer may appear cheaper simply because it assumes less support, a different customer size, or a different service scope.
Ask for the applicable agreement, tier requirements, quote, and incentive schedule in writing. Record the source of every figure and qualification in your comparison; mark unknowns as unknown rather than assuming a benefit applies.
How do you calculate the real economics?
Calculate gross profit from the customer revenue you expect to retain, then subtract vendor or distributor charges and the MSP’s attributable delivery costs. Do not treat a conditional incentive as guaranteed margin: model it separately until its eligibility, attribution, timing, and payment conditions are confirmed.
A practical comparison is:
Expected gross profit = customer revenue − quoted vendor/distributor charges − attributable MSP delivery, billing, support, and training costs.
That is a decision aid, not a promise that a vendor publishes or guarantees a particular margin. Build it for the representative customer scenario rather than comparing headline discounts in isolation.
- Buy price and resale rules: Request the actual price for the customer, territory, volume, and service model you described. Confirm what you may resell, bundle, or include in a managed service.
- Billing and provisioning work: Estimate the staff effort required to create accounts, provision or change subscriptions, reconcile invoices, handle cancellations, and explain charges. A distributor may perform some tasks, but get the division of work documented.
- Support costs: Determine what counts as first-line support, which issues you must handle, when the vendor or distributor can be engaged, and whether support access depends on a separately purchased contract or tier.
- Training and enablement: Include required training time and the cost of keeping qualified staff. Treat campaigns, co-selling, subject-matter access, or funding as value only when the MSP qualifies and the conditions are clear.
- Incentives: Check how a deal is registered, whose account or partner identifier receives attribution, what activity qualifies, when payment occurs, and what happens if a renewal or subscription change is processed through another channel.
- Transition and exit exposure: Account for the time and work to migrate customers, licenses, equipment, or data if the relationship ends. Read the agreement for restrictions, fees, return rights, and customer-handling provisions.
Keep a separate line for each uncertain or conditional benefit. A projected incentive can be shown as a scenario, but it should not be folded into the base case until the MSP has written terms confirming its eligibility and payment conditions.

Which program benefits apply at your tier?
Public benefit pages describe possibilities, not necessarily benefits an individual MSP can claim. Verify the criteria for the specific tier or validation path you can attain, and distinguish broad program resources from higher-touch support, funding, or account access.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Microsoft CSP: indirect resale versus direct billing
In Microsoft CSP’s indirect model, an authorized distributor sits between Microsoft and the reseller and may help with billing, customer support, and marketing. In the direct-bill model, the partner buys directly and must itself sell, bill, manage, and support customers. Those models therefore differ not only in buying channel but also in operational responsibility. See Microsoft’s CSP program overview.
Microsoft’s overview, updated May 18, 2026, describes substantial direct-bill prerequisites. Applicants need at least the previous 12 months as authorized indirect resellers and USD 1 million in trailing-12-month CSP transactional revenue at the Partner Global Account level, alongside other capability, security, designation, and support-plan requirements. Microsoft says indirect-reseller revenue is excluded from that direct-bill revenue calculation. An MSP should not assume its indirect sales count toward the threshold or that meeting the revenue test alone establishes eligibility.
Moving to direct bill also means taking on billing and support responsibilities that may otherwise be handled with distributor assistance. Microsoft explicitly notes that direct-bill status does not guarantee an assigned Microsoft account manager. Do not include account-manager access in the program’s expected value unless it is separately confirmed.
AWS MSP: validation before program benefits
AWS describes its MSP program as an audited technical-and-business validation. Validated MSPs may access funding, training, co-selling, and go-to-market opportunities; access to a program category does not establish a specific funding amount or guarantee a particular opportunity for an applicant. AWS’s detailed program and funding guides require partner access, so request current, applicable details before assigning them a value. Read the AWS MSP program description.

AWS’s page also presents an estimate of 3× faster customer growth when working with validated AWS MSPs, based on an AWS 2024 customer survey. That is AWS’s reported estimate, not a causal guarantee for an individual MSP; the cited passage does not provide the survey methodology. It is not a substitute for a forecast based on your own sales pipeline and costs.

ConnectWise: compare the actual support track
ConnectWise’s public partner page describes resources available broadly as well as expanded support through Growth, Ascend, and Pinnacle. Its comparison differentiates items such as guided campaigns, visibility, subject-matter access, and higher-touch collaboration across tracks. Do not assume every MSP qualifies for every track or that public descriptions establish a specific funding amount.
Ask which track applies to your business, what criteria govern entry or movement between tracks, and which resources are included now rather than merely available somewhere in the program. Then estimate the work required to use them: a campaign or co-selling opportunity has little value if the MSP cannot staff it or if the customer scenario does not fit. See ConnectWise’s partner program page.
Fortinet Engage: distinguish integrator, MSSP, and marketplace models
Fortinet identifies Integrator, MSSP, and Marketplace models within Engage, as well as specialization options. An MSSP should examine whether the model matches its service delivery: Fortinet’s agreement describes MSSP use of equipment for paid services, limits activity by assigned territory, and makes support dependent on a properly purchased and registered support contract. The agreement also contains termination provisions and limits on returns. Those are Fortinet-specific examples, not universal vendor terms. Review the Fortinet partner-program information alongside its published agreement template.
A U.S. MSSP brochure identifies deal registration and FortiGate/FortiAP provisioning, but the brochure’s current entitlements should be confirmed directly before being included in a business case. Ask which benefits apply to your chosen model, territory, and current tier, and request the applicable terms in writing.
Sophos: use the model example within its geographic limits
An official Sophos EMEA MSP webinar illustrates a distinction between upfront hardware purchasing and monthly MSP licensing, and describes first-level partner support and provisioning responsibilities. That is useful as a model-design example, not a U.S. term sheet or a purchasing recommendation. Confirm the terms for the territory where you will operate before applying the example to your economics. See the Sophos EMEA MSP webinar.
Can your MSP serve customers in the required region?
Check both the program’s territory rules and the vendor’s transaction or attribution requirements against the actual customer and partner locations. Regional eligibility can make an otherwise attractive offer unusable, and it is not safe to assume that a partner can transact across borders simply because it has a relationship with a distributor.

For Microsoft CSP, Microsoft documents regional restrictions and Partner of Record requirements. Indirect resellers need an active reseller tenant and a verified Partner Location Account ID for Partner of Record assignment. Microsoft’s distributor guidance says Partner of Record validation covers new orders and most changes to existing subscriptions from December 1, 2025. Attribution can affect eligibility for incentives, so the MSP should confirm which partner identifiers and customer details need to be in place, and verify that the distributor’s process will capture them correctly.

What should you check in the agreement before signing?
Read the agreement and its incorporated policies, not only the benefits page. The agreement determines what the program can require, what the MSP may do, and what happens to customers and operations if eligibility changes or the relationship ends.
For every shortlisted program, look for:
- Program changes and tier criteria: Can eligibility, benefits, or requirements change, and what notice or transition provisions apply?
- Territory and customer restrictions: Which customers may you serve, where may you sell or provide services, and do separate authorization or attribution rules apply?
- Support commitments: Are response times, escalation routes, and service availability specified in binding terms, or are they descriptions of general program support? Identify any separately purchased support contract.
- Incentive conditions: Are eligibility, registration, attribution, renewal, and payment mechanics written down? Can a program change affect expected payments?
- Customer, license, and data handling: What rights does the MSP retain, and what must happen to customer accounts, licenses, data, and service continuity at termination?
- Equipment, inventory, and returns: Who owns equipment, what can be returned, and are there restrictions that could leave the MSP carrying stock or transition costs?
- Termination and remedies: What triggers termination, how much notice applies, and what obligations survive? Identify any liabilities or service gaps the MSP would need to manage.
Fortinet’s published template is a concrete reminder that territorial limits, support-contract conditions, termination, and return rules can appear in program terms. Do not infer that another vendor uses the same terms; obtain and assess that vendor’s own agreement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How can you compare offers without a misleading score?
Use a consistent worksheet, but make each score traceable to evidence. A high score based on an assumption is not comparable with a written price or contract clause. One simple approach is to rate each category from 1 to 5, add a confidence label such as “written,” “public description,” or “unconfirmed,” and keep the supporting note alongside the rating.

What should you ask the vendor or distributor?
Ask for written answers tied to the same customer scenario used in your comparison. A useful diligence request includes:
- The agreement, current tier criteria, territory rules, and any prerequisites for the program path being offered.
- A written price and incentive schedule for your actual territory, service model, and expected volume, with qualification and payment conditions stated.
- The opportunity-registration, Partner of Record or equivalent attribution, and renewal-credit process, including how changes to existing subscriptions are handled.
- A walkthrough of provisioning, billing, invoice reconciliation, cancellations, and customer-change workflows using the representative scenario.
- A clear allocation of first-line support, vendor or distributor escalation, response commitments, support-plan costs, and security responsibilities.
- Applicable training, sales enablement, funding, and co-selling benefits for the specific tier you can attain—not just the list of benefits offered across the whole program.
- The treatment of customer relationships, licenses, equipment, inventory, and data at termination, including return limitations and transition responsibilities.
Ask the vendor or distributor to demonstrate the same sample scenario for each offer. If a benefit or obligation cannot be confirmed, record it as an open item and avoid including it as a guaranteed part of the business case.
How do you make the final decision?
Shortlist the programs that fit your service model and territory, then eliminate any that fail a non-negotiable requirement—such as eligibility, customer authorization, support coverage, or acceptable exit terms. Compare the remaining written offers using the same customer scenario and a base case that excludes unconfirmed incentives.
Choose the program whose economics and operating responsibilities make sense together. An indirect model may be more appropriate when distributor assistance is valuable and the MSP does not want to take on every direct-bill task; a direct model should be assessed against the MSP’s ability to meet its prerequisites and manage billing and support. Validation, tiered go-to-market support, and MSSP models answer different business needs, so their benefits should not be ranked as if they were the same product.
There is no evidence in these public descriptions to identify the best net margin or binding support commitment for a particular MSP. That depends on its jurisdiction, customer mix, quote, qualification status, delivery costs, and negotiated terms. Obtain current written offers for the shortlist and jurisdiction before naming a winner or committing to a forecast.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does joining a vendor partner program guarantee a discount?
No. Public program descriptions do not establish the price or incentive schedule that a particular MSP will receive. Ask for a written quote for your territory, customer profile, expected volume, and intended service model.
Can an MSP participate in more than one vendor partner program?
The cited program descriptions do not establish a general exclusivity rule across vendors. Check each agreement for restrictions on competing relationships, customer work, territories, and use of program-specific resources before assuming the arrangements can coexist.

What does Partner of Record mean in Microsoft CSP?
It is a partner attribution relationship associated with a customer and qualifying CSP transactions. Microsoft’s guidance describes prerequisites for indirect resellers and validation rules; confirm the active requirements and the customer’s and partner’s regions before relying on attribution.
Is AWS’s 3× customer-growth figure a promise to MSPs?
No. AWS presents it as an estimate from a 2024 customer survey about working with validated MSPs, not as a guaranteed result for an individual partner. The cited program-page passage does not expose the survey methodology, so use it as context rather than a forecast.
