Mozilla announced it acquired Anonym on June 16, 2024, adding advertiser-facing technology for audience building and campaign measurement to its advertising strategy. Mozilla calls the effort a way to pioneer privacy in digital ads; that is the company’s characterization, not an independently established ranking. The acquisition is not a Firefox feature announcement: Mozilla later said Anonym Private Audiences operates separately from Firefox and is not integrated with it.
What Mozilla acquired—and why
Mozilla said Anonym was founded in 2022 by former Meta executives Brad Smallwood and Graham Mudd. The June 2024 announcement did not disclose a purchase price or detailed deal terms. In October 2024, Mozilla described Anonym as part of a broader advertising strategy and as infrastructure for privacy-preserving data sharing between advertisers and publishers.
Anonym is an advertising technology business, not a consumer privacy product. Mozilla positions its technology around audience building, attribution and measurement: tasks that ordinarily rely on advertisers and publishers exchanging or using customer-level information.
How Mozilla says Anonym’s approach works
In its acquisition announcement, Mozilla described matching data sets in a secure environment, then producing anonymized insights and models. It said differential privacy algorithms add noise to results to make it harder to trace them back to individuals. Mozilla’s October 2024 explanation framed the aim as enabling advertising data use while limiting exposure of individual data.

These are descriptions from Mozilla, not independent proof that every privacy risk is eliminated. Secure computation and differential privacy can reduce certain kinds of data exposure, but the reviewed announcements do not provide an independent security audit, technical verification, or a full threat model for Anonym’s systems.
What Private Audiences does
In April 2025, Mozilla announced Anonym Private Audiences, an advertiser-facing product it said uses confidential computing to create audience segments from first-party data. Mozilla described a process in which an advertiser uploads a list of high-value customers, the data is processed in a Trusted Execution Environment (TEE), and the advertiser receives a ready-to-use audience segment.

Mozilla said the processing environment is wiped after use and that the platform receives no new personal information or audience attributes. It also said Private Audiences uses differential privacy and secure computation. Those operational and privacy details are Mozilla’s claims; the announcement is not independent technical verification.
Mozilla described Private Audiences as being in closed beta on April 23, 2025. That is a dated status, not confirmation of whether the product is available today. Mozilla also said the product is separate from, and not integrated with, Firefox; the acquisition should not be read as evidence that Firefox browsing histories are fed into Anonym’s advertiser products.

What Mozilla’s performance and reach figures establish
Mozilla reported that early adopters of Private Audiences saw an average 30% improvement in campaign performance compared with traditional broad targeting. This is a company-reported result, not an independently validated benchmark. The announcement does not establish that the same improvement applies to other advertisers, campaigns, markets, or measurement methods.
Mozilla and Anonym’s overview page says advertisers in more than 20 countries use the service. That is a company-published reach figure, not an independently audited count. The overview also names TikTok, Snap, Pinterest and Reddit in its partner material; this does not establish that every integration or capability is available to every customer or in every market.

What advertisers and publishers should evaluate
For organizations assessing privacy-focused advertising infrastructure, Mozilla’s announcements describe a direction and a product concept, but they do not provide a neutral comparison with competing services or enough detail to resolve implementation questions. A practical evaluation should ask:
- Data handling: What data is uploaded, who can access it, how long it is retained, and what is deleted after processing?
- Privacy design: Which data is processed in a TEE, how differential privacy is applied, and what threat model the system is designed to address?
- Use cases and integrations: Which campaign measurement, attribution, audience-building workflows and advertising platforms are supported for the particular market and customer?
- Evidence: Are privacy properties independently audited, and are performance results supported by methods and evidence that can be assessed beyond vendor-reported averages?
- Availability: Is the service still in beta, and what terms, support and production commitments apply?
The reviewed announcements do not establish Anonym’s current beta-to-production status, detailed contract terms, a transaction price, or independent validation of its performance and geographic-reach figures.
