You can move your iPhone photos, contacts, and messages to a new Android phone during its setup—but the transfer method matters. With the classic Android Switch process, wireless transfer copies contacts and on-device photos, while message history requires a cable. Some eligible phones offer an upgraded Android 17 setup that can transfer messages wirelessly or by cable. iCloud-only photos need a separate transfer, and moving old messages does not automatically turn off iMessage for future texts.

Before erasing or trading in your iPhone, verify the important data on Android and send a test message to your number. Keep the old phone and its data until those checks are complete.

Which iPhone-to-Android transfer method should I use?

Use the new Android phone’s setup transfer if you can: it is the most straightforward way to copy supported data directly. Choose a cable if you are using the classic Android Switch experience and want your message history. If setup offers an eligible upgraded Android 17 QR flow, follow its prompts; that version can transfer messages wirelessly or by cable on supported devices and in supported regions.

Route Photos and contacts Messages Important qualification
Classic Android Switch over Wi-Fi Yes No The iPhone needs iOS 15 or later. Keep both phones nearby and connected during the transfer.
Classic cable transfer Yes Yes Requires a compatible data connection; unlock the iPhone and tap Trust when prompted.
Eligible upgraded Android 17 setup Yes Yes Wireless or cable transfer may be available, depending on device, software, and region. Use the QR prompt shown during setup.
Samsung Smart Switch Depends on method Depends on method Samsung’s classic wireless transfer excludes messages; its newer QR workflow has separate operating-system requirements.
Apple iCloud Photos copy to Google Photos iCloud Photos only No A separate account-to-account copy request—not a phone-to-phone or message transfer.

Google lists Pixel 8 devices and newer among the phones that can use its upgraded transfer flow, subject to software and country availability. Samsung describes a newer QR route that requires iOS 26.6 or later on the iPhone and Galaxy Android 17 or later on the destination. These newer requirements do not replace the limitations of classic wireless transfer. Check the prompts on your specific phone rather than assuming every Android device has the same options. See Google’s transfer instructions and Samsung’s Smart Switch information.

What should I do before switching phones?

Prepare both phones before starting so you do not have to interrupt the copy or risk losing access to the source data.

  1. Charge both phones. Keep them plugged in if practical, especially if you have a large photo library or message history.
  2. Connect the iPhone to Wi-Fi and make sure you can unlock it. You may need to approve access on the iPhone during transfer.
  3. Check available space on Android. A destination with too little storage may not be able to hold all the data you select. For an iCloud Photos copy, also check available Google Account storage.
  4. Keep the iPhone and its data intact. Do not erase, trade in, or reset it until you have checked the Android copy and confirmed you can receive new texts.
  5. Use a personal, accessible iPhone where possible. Google cautions that work- or school-managed iPhones may restrict copying some types of data.
  6. Decide whether messages are essential. If you are using classic Android Switch and want message history, plan on a wired transfer rather than the classic app-based Wi-Fi route.

Google says the devices must remain connected to each other throughout the transfer. Its help page says a direct copy usually takes less than 30 minutes but can take hours when there is a lot of data. Treat that as an estimate, not a deadline or guarantee. The transfer may be interrupted if a phone loses power or the connection is broken.

How do I transfer photos, contacts, and messages during Android setup?

Start setup on the new Android phone and choose the option to copy apps and data from an iPhone. The exact labels can vary by phone and software version, so follow the on-screen instructions. If you see an eligible upgraded QR pairing flow, use that flow; otherwise, choose the classic transfer route and connect the phones by cable if you need messages.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Begin Android setup. When asked whether to copy apps and data, select the iPhone or iPad option. If the phone is already set up, see the section below before resetting it.
  2. Choose the available connection method. Follow the setup QR instructions if your phone offers the upgraded flow. Otherwise, select the classic option and connect the phones with a compatible data cable if you want to move message history.
  3. Match the cable to both ports. Depending on the devices, Google describes Lightning-to-USB-C and USB-C-to-USB-C connections. If using an existing Lightning cable with a USB-A end, a compatible USB-A-to-USB-C adapter may be needed. Check the connectors on both phones and use a cable that supports data transfer—not just charging.
  4. Unlock the iPhone and approve the connection. If prompted, tap Trust on the iPhone and enter its passcode.
  5. Select the data you want to copy. Choose photos, contacts, and messages where those options are available. The message option will not appear for every method.
  6. Keep both devices connected until copying finishes. Avoid using or disconnecting either phone while the transfer is running.
  7. Check the destination before moving on. Open representative photos, contacts, and message threads on Android. A completion screen is not a substitute for checking that the items you care about arrived.

Google’s step-by-step setup guidance covers the Android copy flow and supported connection options. No single cable is right for every pair of phones; match the connector types and confirm that the cable can carry data.

Will I lose my iPhone photos if I switch to Android?

Photos stored on the iPhone can transfer through supported classic wireless or cable setup. But a phone-to-phone copy is not a promise that your entire iCloud Photos library will move: items that exist only in iCloud need a separate plan.

To copy iCloud Photos to Google Photos, use Apple’s Data & Privacy service:

  1. Sign in to Apple’s Data & Privacy page with your Apple Account.
  2. Request a copy of your data and select Google Photos as the destination for the iCloud Photos transfer.
  3. Authorize the request and make sure your Google Account has enough available storage for the photos and videos.
  4. Wait for the transfer, then check Google Photos for older and recent images before relying on the new library.

This is a copy, not continuous syncing: Apple says the request does not delete the originals from iCloud Photos. Apple requires two-factor authentication and Advanced Data Protection for iCloud to be turned off for this transfer route. If you do not want to disable Advanced Data Protection, do not assume this service can copy your library; choose another way to preserve or back up your photos instead.

Apple says most transfers take three to seven days, although some can take up to 30 days. Those estimates apply to the iCloud Photos account-to-account copy, not direct phone setup. Apple also warns that shared or smart albums, Live Photos, some metadata, and some formats may not come across as expected. Photos exceeding Google Photos’ 20,000-photo-per-album limit may transfer but will not be added to that album. See Apple’s transfer instructions and limitations.

How do I make sure all my contacts transfer?

Select contacts during setup, then spot-check the destination. Contacts synced to an account other than the iPhone itself may not copy as part of the setup transfer; signing in to that same account on Android may sync them there.

After setup, check a few contacts you recognize, including entries with phone numbers and photos. If one is missing, identify which account stored it on the iPhone—such as an email account—and add that account to Android so it can sync. A transfer-complete message alone cannot confirm that every account-based contact was included.

Can I transfer iPhone messages without a cable?

It depends on the setup flow. Classic Android Switch over Wi-Fi does not copy messages, so use its cable transfer if message history matters. Eligible devices using the upgraded Android 17 flow may offer message transfer wirelessly or by cable, but availability depends on the device, software, and region. Check what your setup screen actually offers rather than treating wireless message transfer as universal.

After history moves, address future delivery separately. On the old iPhone, turn off iMessage at Settings > Apps > Messages > iMessage, and turn off FaceTime at Settings > Apps > FaceTime. If you no longer have the iPhone, use Apple’s online iMessage deregistration page to deregister your phone number.

These are two separate jobs: the Android transfer copies past conversations, while disabling or deregistering iMessage helps new messages reach your number as standard texts on the new phone. If you skip deregistration, some messages from people using Apple devices may continue to be routed through iMessage rather than reaching Android normally.

Will my WhatsApp chats transfer too?

WhatsApp has its own transfer process; do not assume it is included in the phone’s standard message transfer. Google’s instructions require the same phone number on the new phone and the old iPhone’s cable for the WhatsApp migration.

  • Classic cable setup: Follow the WhatsApp QR prompt during the cable-based iPhone-to-Android copy.
  • Upgraded QR-paired setup: After setup, use the separate Transfer WhatsApp Chats prompt and connect the iPhone by cable before using WhatsApp on Android.

Start this process before creating new chats on the destination. WhatsApp history from the iPhone cannot be merged with new chats already created on Android, so setting up and using WhatsApp first can complicate the move. Follow Google’s WhatsApp transfer instructions for the route available on your devices.

What data might not transfer?

Do not treat a successful copy as a complete clone of the iPhone. Google lists items that do not transfer in the Android setup process, including paid apps, in-app purchases, Safari bookmarks, and health data. Some media may also be missing if it was stored only in iCloud, uses a format that is not supported by the destination, or was not selected in the transfer.

For contacts, check whether a missing entry belongs to an account that has not been added to Android. For photos, distinguish items on the iPhone from items stored only in iCloud. For messages, confirm that you used a route that supports message history. These checks help identify whether an item was excluded by the method, left in an online account, or missed because the transfer was interrupted.

Can I use Smart Switch after I set up my Galaxy?

Possibly, but do not count on a universal post-setup rescue. Google says some Android 17 devices and select earlier devices allow data copying after setup; availability varies, and some cases require returning to setup or performing a factory reset. Samsung’s transfer options also vary by method and operating-system version: its classic wireless matrix excludes messages, while its newer QR workflow has separate requirements. Check the instructions for your Galaxy and the transfer route it supports before resetting or repeating setup.

If Android offers a post-setup copy option, use its on-screen prompts and check whether it supports the data you still need. If not, a return to setup may be necessary. Before any factory reset, confirm that anything already created on the Android phone is backed up or otherwise safe; resetting erases local data on that phone. Google’s transfer help and Samsung’s Smart Switch page describe their respective options.

  • Photos: Open a few older and recent images, plus important videos. If you requested an iCloud Photos copy, confirm that the library is appearing in Google Photos; Apple’s copy can take days.
  • Contacts: Check several names, phone numbers, and contact photos. Investigate missing entries by checking their original synced account.
  • Messages: Open several conversations, including older threads and ones with attachments. If history is absent, confirm whether the method you used supported message transfer.
  • WhatsApp: If you use it, check that your old chats appear before relying on the new phone as the only copy.
  • New texts: Send a test message to your number from someone who uses an iPhone and confirm it arrives on Android. If it does not, check iMessage and FaceTime settings or use Apple’s deregistration page if you no longer have the iPhone.

Only after these checks should you erase, trade in, or give away the old phone. Keep in mind that a transfer can omit specific data types even when the main copy completes successfully.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a Google Account to move my iPhone data to Android?

A Google Account is needed for Google services such as Google Photos, and you will need one with enough storage if you use Apple’s iCloud Photos copy-to-Google-Photos option. The direct setup transfer and a cloud-library copy are separate steps, so having an account does not mean every iCloud item will automatically appear on the phone.

Can I move photos from iPhone to Android without using Google Photos?

Yes. The setup transfer can copy supported photos stored on the iPhone directly to Android. The Google Photos route described here is specifically for requesting a copy of an iCloud Photos library; it is not the only way to preserve photos, and it is not required for the phone-to-phone transfer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will my iPhone apps and paid purchases appear on Android?

Do not expect a one-for-one app or purchase migration. Google lists paid apps and in-app purchases among the items that do not transfer through its setup copy, so check with the relevant app publisher about whether an Android version or account-based restoration is available.
