Connected across the conductors being protected, it diverts surge current and limits the voltage reaching equipment. The MOV absorbs energy while doing this, so its ratings and thermal protection matter.
What does MOV mean?
MOV stands for metal oxide varistor, also called a voltage-dependent resistor. IEC defines it as a nonlinear resistor made from sintered metal oxides whose conductance at a given temperature increases rapidly with voltage. In common designs, the active material is a sintered zinc-oxide disc with additives and electrodes; other shapes and multilayer constructions also exist. The zinc-oxide grain boundaries help produce the nonlinear conduction behavior. IEC 61643-332:2024
How does an MOV suppress a surge?
An MOV is typically connected in parallel, or shunt, across the circuit conductors it is intended to protect. At normal operating voltage it has relatively high resistance and carries little current. When voltage rises sharply, its conductance increases; it provides a path for surge current and limits the voltage across the protected conductors while that current flows. The voltage is limited to a level above normal operating voltage, not reduced to zero.
The surge current dissipates energy in the MOV. The component must therefore be selected for the circuit and the anticipated surge conditions. An MOV is not an energy-free switch, and its ability to handle one pulse does not by itself establish how it will perform under repeated or different pulses.

What do MOV ratings mean?
Compare ratings only with their stated conditions and the MOV manufacturer’s datasheet. The key values describe different parts of the component’s behavior; one cannot stand in for another.

Why waveform and test conditions matter
Surge ratings are tied to specified waveforms and test methods. For example, IEEE C62.33-2016 covers MOV components and includes ratings associated with an 8/20 impulse waveform. Its stated scope ranges are 5 V to 1200 V nominal varistor voltage, 10 A to 70 kA 8/20 surge current, and 10 V to 3 kV 8/20 clamping voltage. These are ranges covered by the standard, not typical values, recommendations, or a specification for a particular MOV. IEEE Standards Association, IEEE C62.33-2016

The standard also describes systems for which appropriately selected components could be used: continuous AC voltages from 2.5 V rms to 750 V rms, steady-state DC voltages from 3.3 V to 1000 V, and peak signal-feed voltages from 3.5 V to 850 V. Those scope ranges do not establish that any individual part is suitable for a given circuit. Selection still depends on the part’s ratings, circuit conditions, and required protection.
Why thermal protection matters
Because surge current dissipates energy in an MOV, excessive or sustained stress can cause overheating. A thermally protected MOV includes a series, non-resettable element designed to disconnect the MOV when it overheats from excessive dissipation. Once that element disconnects, the MOV is no longer connected to protect the circuit; the device or system may need inspection or replacement. An MOV component is not a complete surge protector
A bare MOV is one component. A consumer surge-protective device is a finished product with its own design, ratings, and safety requirements. An MOV’s specification alone does not establish the safety or performance of the device in which it is used. For a finished protector, evaluate the whole-device ratings and applicable certification rather than inferring performance from a component listing.
Manufacturers offer MOV families for particular applications, including TDK energy varistors and Panasonic ZNR surge absorbers. These product families are examples of components, not endorsements or evidence that a specific model fits a particular mains circuit.

Practical MOV selection checklist
- Identify the actual continuous circuit voltage and whether the supply is AC or DC; compare it with the MOV’s MCOV.
- Read varistor voltage and tolerance alongside the datasheet’s measurement method.
- Compare clamping voltage only at the stated impulse current and waveform.
- Check surge-current and energy ratings against the expected pulse shape, amplitude, repetition, and spacing.
- Confirm whether thermal disconnection is included and whether package, mounting, and environmental conditions fit the design.
- For a finished protector, assess the complete device and its relevant certification; do not treat a standalone MOV rating as a device-level safety claim.
These checks explain the ratings but do not replace a design review, component datasheet, or applicable electrical safety requirements.
