Ara240 is an accelerator designed to work with an AI-enabled host computer—not a standalone PC—and NXP positions it for generative AI, large language models (LLMs), vision-language models (VLMs) and other deep-learning workloads at the edge.
What the Ara240 is—and what Mouser’s announcement means
A discrete NPU handles neural-network processing alongside a host processor. NXP says its Ara DNPUs complement application processors by offloading AI and machine-learning tasks, making Ara240 a component for an embedded or edge-computing design rather than a complete robotics computer. NXP’s Ara240 product page describes the accelerator and its software and hardware options.
Mouser’s October 5, 2026 announcement says it is stocking the Ara240 DNPU. Its listing identifies the part as ARA-2120AA-IA0T-B. Distributor inventory and regional availability can change, so confirm current stock and the exact part before procurement. Mouser’s announcement names industrial automation, autonomous robots, smart infrastructure, human-machine interface (HMI) platforms and edge applications as intended markets.
What performance and memory does NXP specify?
NXP lists up to 40 eTOPS—equivalent tera operations per second—and support for up to 16GB of LPDDR4 memory. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent benchmark results. “Up to” is a ceiling, not a guarantee that every model or workload will achieve that throughput. TOPS figures are not directly comparable across accelerators unless precision, workload and measurement conditions also match.

A commercial-grade Ara240 datasheet, Rev. 2.0 dated April 2, 2026, reports typical power of 6–8 W and idle power of 2 W. NXP’s product page lists a newer Rev. 3.0 datasheet dated July 3, 2026, so consult the current revision and the exact device variant before using power figures for system design. The cited commercial datasheet excerpt gives a junction-temperature range of 0°C to 85°C for commercial grade; that range should not be applied to an industrial-grade variant. How it connects to a host and what software it supports
NXP lists PCIe Gen4 x4 and USB 3.2 Gen 1 host interfaces, a Linux runtime, and support for TensorFlow, PyTorch and ONNX. Those interface and framework listings describe the platform options; a developer should verify compatibility for the intended host, software versions, model and deployment path.

NXP also points to an Ara SDK for deploying models to Ara silicon and modules. The product page identifies an Ara240 16GB M.2 module as an evaluation or integration option. A module is still an accelerator component: a working system needs a compatible host, the relevant software stack and appropriate integration. NXP’s Ara240 product page links to its product and development resources.
Which AI workloads and applications is it aimed at?
NXP names CNNs, transformer models, LLMs, VLMs and vision-language-action models among the workload categories for Ara240. Its commercial datasheet also lists examples including latent diffusion, mixture-of-experts, vision transformers, object detection and tracking, segmentation, pose estimation and speech recognition. These are intended application areas, not a promise that every model will run as-is; deployment may require conversion, optimization and validation on the target system.

Mouser’s announcement frames the hardware for industrial automation, autonomous robots, smart infrastructure, HMI and edge applications. NXP also lists secure boot and a root-of-trust processor. These features may matter in an embedded design, but their presence alone does not establish that a particular system meets a project’s security requirements.

- Confirm the item: Mouser’s notice identifies the discrete part as ARA-2120AA-IA0T-B. NXP separately lists a 16GB M.2 module; check which product form you need.
- Check current documentation: NXP’s product page lists Ara240 datasheet Rev. 3.0, dated July 3, 2026, and hardware design guide Rev. 2.1, dated August 24, 2026. Use the applicable current documents for pinout, electrical, thermal and integration decisions.
- Validate the host and software: Confirm that the selected PCIe or USB connection, Linux environment, SDK and model workflow suit your platform.
- Match the operating grade: Do not treat commercial-grade temperature or power data as specifications for another grade or configuration.
- Check lifecycle claims product by product: NXP describes a longevity program offering at least 10 years for participating products and at least 15 years for designated automotive, telecom and medical products. That program statement does not establish Ara240’s participation or designation.
