Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If your mouse works on the Windows 11 desktop but not in a game, start by checking whether the problem affects one game or every game. That distinction helps you tell a game-specific input issue from a mouse or connection problem. If the mouse also fails outside games, troubleshoot its power and connection first.
First, find out where the mouse stops working
Check whether the pointer moves and clicks respond on the Windows desktop. Then try another game, if available. Note whether the problem began after a Windows or game update, or after changing the mouse, receiver, USB port, or other connection.
- Fails on the desktop and in games: Start with the mouse, its power, and its connection to the PC.
- Works on the desktop but fails in several games: Check the mouse connection and Windows pointer behavior, then compare with another PC if needed.
- Works elsewhere but fails in one game: Focus on that game’s updates, input options, and compatibility. A Windows pointer setting is not established as a fix for a game that cannot detect the mouse.
Check the mouse and its connection
Microsoft recommends basic connection checks when a mouse is not working. For more guidance, see Microsoft’s mouse and keyboard troubleshooting steps.
- Wired USB mouse: Disconnect and reconnect it, try a different USB port, and bypass a hub that may be unpowered or faulty. Check the cable for damage and make sure dirt is not blocking the sensor.
- Battery-powered mouse: Check its charge or install fresh batteries.
- Wireless mouse with a USB receiver: Check for a device or receiver reset button. Unplug the receiver, wait about 10 seconds, and reconnect it.
- Bluetooth mouse: Check its Bluetooth connection and follow Bluetooth-specific troubleshooting if it has disconnected.
Test the mouse on another PC
If the mouse has no lights or its cursor does not move, test it on another PC. Microsoft Support advises: “If the device doesn’t appear to work at all (no lights appear on the device when it’s plugged in, or the cursor doesn’t move or doesn’t appear on the screen), connect it to another PC and make sure the device works on that PC.” Install any driver the mouse requires before judging the result.

If only one game cannot use the mouse
Check the game’s update and input options
Look for updates and support guidance from the game’s publisher, and inspect the game’s own mouse or input settings. A game may handle input differently from the Windows desktop, so desktop pointer movement alone does not establish that the game is configured to accept it.

Try Microsoft’s compatibility guidance when relevant
If the problem began after a Windows version change, Microsoft recommends checking for an app update. If one is not available, open Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Program Compatibility Troubleshooter. This is general app-compatibility advice; it does not guarantee a mouse-specific fix or diagnose a game’s mouse capture, overlay, anti-cheat, or input API behavior. See Microsoft’s app compatibility guidance.
Test windowed-game optimization only for a supported game
Microsoft says Optimizations for windowed games applies to supported DirectX 10/11 games running windowed or borderless, and describes it as a performance and presentation optimization—not a general mouse-input repair. If you want to test it for a game-specific problem, go to Settings > System > Display > Graphics, select the game, change its per-app setting, and restart the game. Treat the change as a reversible compatibility test, not a proven mouse fix. See Microsoft’s guidance on Optimizations for windowed games.

Check Windows pointer behavior if movement feels wrong
Windows 11’s Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse page includes pointer speed and Enhance pointer precision. To find additional pointer behavior, open Additional mouse settings and select the Pointer Options tab. These controls may help if the pointer moves unexpectedly or feels difficult to control. They are not documented as fixes for a game that does not detect the mouse. See Microsoft’s mouse settings guidance.
