If your Windows 11 laptop’s keyboard, touchpad, or an attached mouse has stopped responding, begin with power, connection, and physical checks before changing drivers or attempting recovery. The steps below help isolate whether the problem is with an external device, its connection, Windows, or the laptop itself. Microsoft’s guidance does not identify one single cause for simultaneous keyboard and mouse failure.
1. Check power and physical condition
For a wireless mouse or keyboard, make sure it is charged or try fresh batteries. Check wired devices for loose or damaged cables. Look for dirt or debris around keys and the mouse sensor, and clean carefully according to the device maker’s instructions.
For the laptop’s built-in keyboard or touchpad, note whether the problem affects all keys or gestures, or only particular ones. Avoid forcing keys or using liquid cleaners. Microsoft recommends checking batteries, cables, and dirt as initial troubleshooting steps: mouse and keyboard problems in Windows.
2. Reconnect USB devices and try another port
Disconnect an external keyboard or mouse, then reconnect it. Try a different USB port on the laptop. If it is connected through a hub, connect it directly to the laptop; an unpowered or problematic hub can interfere with operation.

If neither external device works, test one device at a time. That makes it easier to tell whether one peripheral or connection is responsible.
3. Reset the wireless connection
Check the mouse, keyboard, or wireless receiver for a reset button and follow the device maker’s directions. For a USB wireless receiver, unplug it, wait about 10 seconds, then reconnect it. For a Bluetooth device, troubleshoot its Bluetooth connection separately rather than treating it like a USB receiver.

4. Test an external device on another PC
Connect the mouse or keyboard to another computer, installing its required driver if applicable. If it fails there too, the device itself may need replacement. If it works on the other computer, investigate the laptop’s port, Windows setup, or hardware instead. This test helps narrow down the fault; it does not by itself establish which laptop-side component is responsible.
5. Check for driver updates through Windows Update
Microsoft identifies Windows Update as the preferred way to get driver updates, although an update may not be available for every device. Check for available updates before turning to manual driver changes. Microsoft’s guidance is here: mouse and keyboard troubleshooting and updating drivers through Device Manager.

6. Update or reinstall the touchpad driver
If the built-in touchpad is the problem, open Device Manager and look under Human Interface Devices or Mice and other pointing devices. The touchpad may be listed in either location. From its device entry, use the available driver update or uninstall option; after uninstalling, restart the laptop so Windows can attempt to reinstall the driver. Microsoft notes that reinstalling may prompt Windows Update to download a driver.

7. Roll back a driver if the failure began after an update
If the problem started soon after a driver update, Device Manager may offer an option to roll back to the previous driver. Microsoft says reinstalling the previous driver often resolves issues that began after Windows Update, but it is not a guaranteed fix for every laptop or input device. If touchpad driver steps do not help, contact the laptop manufacturer for model-specific support. The manufacturer can advise whether the built-in keyboard or touchpad needs a model-specific driver or hardware service. Persistent failure of both built-in input devices can have multiple explanations; Microsoft’s support pages do not establish a single cause.

Windows recovery tools are a later step, not a first response to an unresponsive mouse or keyboard. Options can include uninstalling a recent update, troubleshooting, reinstalling Windows, or resetting the PC. Their availability and effects vary. Back up important files before using recovery options, and choose the least disruptive option that fits the problem. Microsoft explains Windows recovery options and the Windows Recovery Environment.
